Exhibit preview 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday at Detroit Historical Museum. $150, presale only. 313-833-1980. Me, I'd rather check Mojo et. al than blow $150 bucks on an exhibition that's gonna be open every day until mid-2004. If I was in Detroit that is... (sigh) The Free Press has also published this techno timeline: (http://www.freep.com/entertainment/music/techno12_20030112.htm) Events in Detroit Techno History 1981: Juan Atkins' Cybotron releases its first single, "Alleys of Your Mind." 1983: Atkins releases "Techno City" and gives the music a name. 1985: DJs Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson link with Atkins to form a network of Detroit record labels. 1987: May records "Strings of Life," regarded by many to be Detroit techno's seminal track. 1988: Virgin Records releases the compilation "Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit" and introduces the music to Europe, where it's wholeheartedly embraced. 1989: Saunderson becomes a British pop star on the back of singles like "Big Fun" and "Good Life." 1991: Carl Craig helps establish Detroit techno's second wave. 1992: Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Underground Resistance launch an edgy, militant brand of their hometown's sound. 1993: Windsor's Richie Hawtin, recording as Plastikman, releases his first album and heads to superstar success. 1996: Artists such as Stacey Pullen and Sean Deason exploit new technology to craft the third wave of Detroit techno. 2000: The first Detroit Electronic Music Festival hits Hart Plaza, drawing an estimated million people to the riverfront. 2003: "Techno: Detroit's Gift to the World" premieres at the Detroit Historical Museum.
(313) 'Settings' CD RELEASE PARTY - Thinkbox
'Settings' CD RELEASE PARTY WHO: THINKBOX ( http://www.thinkbox.ca ) WHAT: experimental electronic music CD release & performance event WHEN: January 24, 2003 beginning at 9pm WHERE: Detroit Contemporary, 5141 Rosa Parks Boulevard Detroit, MI 48208 COST: $5 (you will receive a coupon for $5 off the 'Settings' CD release) WHO/WHAT IS 'THINKBOX': Since the Thinkbox self-curating media collective started sharing ideas in the late 1990's, they have involved themselves (and the Windsor/Detroit art and electronic music communities) with their vision of producing a kind of experimental 'intermedia' that is both unfamiliar and unique, and most often introducing sound as a key element. This collective, while occasionally in flux, currently retains a solid core of members that consists of Windsor's Mark Laliberte, Christopher Bissonnette, Chris McNamara, Steven Roy, and Ypsilanti Michigan's Bill Van Loo. Local electronic music community veteran Rob Theakston (also from Ypsilanti) is also regularly involved with the collective, and will be assisting with promotions and distribution for future events and media releases. Much of their collective output to this point has involved the creation of large scale new media installations, of video projections, of performances in gallery settings, as well as occasional forays into the more experimental aspects of club culture. For example, McNamara, a professor of film and video at the University of Michigan, recently exhibited a video installation at 'Stiftung BINZ 39' in Zurich, Switzerland, and will be returning there as 'artist-in-residence' in summer 2003; Van Loo, well-known in the area for his unique laptop performances, recently opened for veteran UK sound artist David Toop during his local stopover at Artcite Inc this past November; Laliberte, a sound installation artist showing on a national level, was commissioned in June 2002 by CBC Radio Windsor to collaborate with one of their reporters on a study & manipulation of the ambient sounds floating around the Windsor area, to explore the ways in which 'field recordings' can be used as a creative material and a compositional source (also of note: the source sound for this project was later opened up to the rest of the collective, resulting in 'Interpretations', an MP3 'remix' project released exclusively on www.thinkbox.ca, their website). Meanwhile, all the Thinkbox members have toned their personal sound palettes in recent years by hosting events at Windsor venues such as Milk (where they do a monthly glitch and texture night called 'Signal'), The Press Club, Lift Lounge, and Artcite Inc, as well as participating in other DJ events in both Detroit and Toronto. 2003 is looking to be a key year for Thinkbox, as they prepare to release 'Settings' which will officially debut at a release party at 'Detroit Contemporary' on Jan 24, 2003. This special evening will host a number of unique moments; most notably, it will be the first time that all of the members will perform in one evening at a single venue. It should be a spectacle, to say the least. THINKBOX P.O. Under this guise, the Finnish producer supplants avant chops and blips for smooth digital house. Lengthy, twilight specter and sultry female vocalists not only made Luomo's one and only album, 2001's Vocal City, an entrancing favorite on the dancefloor, it seduced critics as well. For this gig, Luomo promises favorites from Vocal City and a preview of his upcoming album on the Force Trax label. (DB) www.flavorpill.net/current

(313) Rolando in London - guest list
The background: Rolando is playing at BASE on the 31st January, which is at Crash in Vauxhall. Colin Dale, Jim Masters and Brenda Russell provide support, with us playing booty, electro and ghetto tech in the second room. Anyway, it turns out that I can get 313ers on a concessions list where it'll cost £8 to get in rather than the £12 door tab. Hit me back privately (I've always wanted to say that!) and I'll make sure your name is down. Even if you're only *maybe* going, you might as well get your name on the list - better safe than sorry! (313) Maestro
Following the recent thread about the influence of disco, I thought I'd mention this film I've heard about 'Maestro'. It's going to have some advance screenings in London in February, just wondering if anyone has seen it yet and can offer a review, as it's already been shown at selected venues in the US and Europe. http://maestro-documentary.com/index.htm has a bit of information which I've included below. Cheers Gary MAESTRO is a feature film documentary, 3.5 years in the making, it captures the intense experiences of the people who were responsible for underground dance music that influenced the world. MAESTRO takes you into the world of Larry Levan, Paradise Garage; David Mancuso, The Loft, as they formed the center piece within the underground culture as it evolved into dance music of today. This culture transcended musical genres and created magical, lasting moments, not only in clubs but also within the spiritual terrain of our hearts and psyches. These modern day maestros provided environments where our spirits, creativity, passion and diversity both thrived and flourished. They were so significant that without them, dance music today would be drastically different-worldwide. Most film documents of this movement have fallen short of its true story and impact to the world, providing us with a glossed over account of the time. Opting for a more personal and candid approach, MAESTRO shows the true history of its individuals. Tracing the underground's dance origin, MAESTRO brings out a true, candid and tragic understanding of this intense lifestyle, and the lives they lived and died for. It is far from mere nostalgia, this film is like the music and experiences it chronicles.

Amato co-runs the Goodlife imprint along with two colleagues from the Grenoble (his home town) techno scene - one of whom is Oliver from techno-duo, Oxia, whose work also features heavily in the Goodlife catalogue. Whilst The Hacker's love of 80's style electronic music is obviously apparent in his production work, many of his more 4/4 influences have been ignored in the hype surrounding his Gigolo releases, though they are apparent to anyone who has checked his work on other labels. RE: (313) Hidden Detroit Techno Gems
I saw a bizarre-looking compilation in the shop yesterday - a cartoony bulldog and a cartoony eagle square off on the cover against a backdrop of clashing American and British flags. I think the compilation was called "The Showdown!" or something like that, with the general idea being that it showcased a "battle" between UK and US techno producers. So on the "American" side you get "Nude Photo", "When We Used To Play", and a few other tracks I already have. The "British" side had nothing I recognised - music licensed from labels like Deconstruction. I didn't bother buying it, opting instead for the mint copy of "Techno - The New Dance Sound of Detroit", which is *the* example of a perfect compilation. In particular, you can't argue with "Un Deux Trois" (still sounds extremely futuristic to me, and that's not a word I use very often) or the version of "Techno Music". just want to mention that the last sentence "..will only be available direct from the Peacefrog offices" was sent out to record shops, meant for them. meaning that they cannot order the records from the regular distributors. so it's not meant as 'normal' record buyers to buy the records at peacefrog. excuses. . Re: (313) Jeff Mills at ARC
Yeah it took them awhile to sort out the Arc system but they finally got it right imho. It didn't sound quite as impressive during Mills' set as it does on a Friday night with Tenaglia workin' the Phazon mixer though...I don't know if that's a familiarity thing or a mixer thing (Mills' used an X-One). Whatever it still sounded better than 99% of other clubs I've been to... As I said to krux separately, the Arc sound system is really impressive (though the event I went to, the inaugural of Love from New York with Matty Heilbrunn in the old Body & Soul Sunday pm time slot was pretty much a dud). Wish I'd been able to hear Mills play, one of the few Detroit DJs of note I've never seen. For those visiting NY, I highly recommend Naughtybooth. Good calendar, reviews, club summaries. I recently purchased a copy of the compilation LP "Upfront 9, A Sign Of The Times" (Serious UK) which contains Triple XXX "The Bedroom Scene" (Straight Up Mix). Does anyone know of other vinyl compilation LPs from the '80s and early '90s that contain Detroit techno tracks that are difficult to find and therefore expensive as originals? Another one is "Electro 4" (Streetsounds UK) which contains Cybotron "Techno City". O.L.
