a lot of people will probably barf all over this statement
but i think one of the toughest things to do is play a well
 programmed hard techno set.

no you are absolutely right! that's why people who play hard and
INTERESTING with their own personal style can make even the most rigid and
boring monotracks funky: Claude Young! Mills obviously. Surgeon and
Jay Dehman can bring it too, when in form.

The problem is there's for every interesting hard techno DJ there's 100,000
20 year kids with the same records and no skills or ability to program/mix
it, it's just a Beyer megamix yawnfest. It's okay they'll outgrow it ;)

Anybody has any infos on that release?

Claude Young - Thoughts of Phutura / Axis 033

I found that in the Axis homepage online shop and it's sold out.
there seem to exist only 100 copies

Does anybody know what's up with that?

Claude Young the first artist than Jeff Mills (and Rob Hood formerly) on
Axis? Whew! I want to hear that

 Infos please!

 Cheers, Arne

P.S.: The new Every dog has it's day part 4 is excellent by the way!

RE: (313) Every Dog 4

2003-05-10 Thread Max Duley / ARCart
The Axis 33 is something of a jive bunny style (not really) megamix of Axis,
Purpose Maker Tomorrow material put together by Claude Young across 2
sides of vinyl. It's very good...not a record to DJ with (unless you're
playing to people who've never heard any Mills material). Claude seems to
have picked most of my favourite Axis/Mills moments of all styles, ambient,
beat driven etc which is just fine with me.

I ordered 2 copies for myself and a friend, a couple of days later it was
listed as sold out. My friend already knows of someone who paid ?40 for it
second hand...

Regarding Every Dog...I listened through #4 at home (not my copy) then
pulled out my copy of #3 which I'd only played once since I got it a year or
so ago. I just can't tell the difference enough to justify picking it up.
It's all good stuff, all very worthy, but all the tracks seem based on the
same sounds as the other volumes, and nothing stands out. My fave pieces are
on #2, although I don't know #1. If there's another I hope it's different.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the Every Dog material is old, from the
early-mid 90s. I I think I read that in a Robert Hood interview...in the
printed version of Overload? Am I hallucinating or can anyone confirm?

Sorry if this has been covered in detail already.

And on the Axis tip... I heard about this Claude Young record on Axis?
Only
100 copies worldwide available? What;s the story on this?

ou're right Max. It came up during my first talk with Robert:

1995 : Nighttime World 1, which was supposed to be HM : Every Dog Has It's
Day, released in 2000. Originally Jeff and I were supposed to record tracks for
that album : Every Dog Has It's Day back in '93. Jeff can be erratic at times,
he changes minds, but I had already done tracks. These tracks were good so I
decided to make an album out of it.

can reach the list from my online mailbox of the same account?

Re: (313) Swedish Techno/ was Every Dog 4

2003-05-10 Thread Peter Leidy

I have heard a lot of Swedish techno/tech-house that is NOT just 2-beat loops
but some quite musical material. I'm surprised the Swedes get hated on so
 much.

just a quick note on swedich techno because this topic seems to get folks
talking in circles without really getting anywhere:

I've noticed Swedish Techno has two different meanings in general
conversation:

1. Techno from Sweden - I'm sure nobody will argue that some of this is
quite varied, musical, interesting, etc, etc..

2. A Techno Style characterized by the minimal clubby compositions and
compressed drum sounds for maximum loudness:) This stuff got a lot
of exposure from Swedish Labels/Producers in the late 90's ala Adam Beyer/
Drum Code, etc.. This style is not too varied, and over the last few years
has become even more formulaic that it was in the beginning - hence the
disinterest from some of the 313 community. When referring to Swedish
Techno in this sense- it may or may not actually be coming from Sweden,
and by no means represents all of the techno coming out of Sweden-

I find the second definition more commonly used than the first, but the
context in which it is used usually clarifies the intended definition
quite easily.

I'm guessing this is pretty obvious to most, but in the world of email
groups- continuity of semantics helps keep what little order we have from
becoming total chaos..

Re: (313) Best Drexciya

2003-05-10 Thread spacecrusher
I don't really know the most popular Drexciya albums like Bubblemetropolis, so
I'm guessing I'd like them better than Grava 4, but at the same time, I love
this album. Its way deep compared to the other Drexciya I've heard, and while
its a departure for them, its appriate to the theme- i.e. Deep Space!

I can't find my copy of it, but I think depressurization is the blue one? The
outer track on the b-side, the one with the bass that sounds almost like it
came from a bass guitar, and the drum breaks sound organic too like they were
played by a drummer? THIS TRACK I LOVE. those crazy synths burned my brain
the first time I heard it so I forever will equate that style of techno/electro
sounds with an Underwater perspective. Listening to that stuff makes me want
to put on scuba gear and jump in the nearest body of water! LOL!
