Laurent Garnier: 01) My pictures were not conform to the new demand of the US Embassy ...they were of course regular passport pictures (sounds pretty obvious doesn't it) but these don't work anymore for a US visa in France. (313) Atomic Jam Report...
*WOW* What can I say - having never visited birmingham/the Que club before I was totally blown away - for anyone that hasn't been there it's a giant cathedral/church fitted with lasers and an enormous balcony rammed to the rafters :) Abosultely storming minimal goodness from Clarke and Rush with some dancemania thrown in for good measure :) Is there anything that comes close to this in London ? I've been meaning to check out Lost but still haven't got around to it - does it have the same kinda vibe as AJ ? Re: (313) Fabrice Lig in Singapore on 05 June and 06 June
Hey man ! ;-) I didn't think about that and anyway don't like to put some tour advertising on the list :-) But anyway the agent from Singapore (Donovan Wong), will try to let me back to play live dj in Singapore again or Malaysia and in the same time, set up something in Australia, maybe in China too, if the Sars crisis is over... I'll start a tour for my Raygun album's release in september...Probably a tour in Japan, in Europe too. But yes, I'll keep in mind to send you an e-mail if I have to go back around asia...I really would like to play in Australia too ;-) Hear you soon man ! (313) Sounds Like Techno
This is a new online techno documentary backed by the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission). It centres on the Australian movement, but there's a whole section devoted to Detroit as well as interviews with Derrick May, Stacey Pullen and others as well as some of the movers behind the scene in Australia, from promoters to DJs and producers, including Richard Maher, who first toured the likes of Atkins, May, Mills, etc, as well as Richie Rich who has put on memorable events with Mills and Hawtin and been very consistent, with a label, store, etc, as well as Voiteck and others. I have only seen a little, and I think you need Flash. Sounds Like Techno is a new online documentary looking at the history of techno music in Australia. www.soundsliketechno.com.au Media Release A history of techno music in Australia Sounds Like Techno is a new online documentary exploring techno music, from its roots and early influences to its place in Australian music today. Produced by Springtime Productions, with the assistance of the ABC Film Victoria Multimedia Production Accord, the site is now live at www.soundsliketechno.com.au. Featuring local and international artists, event promoters, managers of independent record labels and music from some of the most important DJs from Detroit to Melbourne, Sounds Like Techno is a unique Australian website which combines a broad range of opinions, styles and influences that are inherent to this subculture. With the birth of techno, music has entered a new era. For some people it is noise, for others it is the music of the future. But whatever it is, or sounds like, techno has become popular. It has grown from a subculture ten years ago, to a substantial industry today. Sounds Like Techno documents the history of techno music overseas and in Australia, its origins in the evolution of electronic music, and offers an insight into the making of the music and the tools involved. The site examines the impact and effect that the digital revolution has had on this genre. It looks at the way artists and producers use digital equipment and software to produce, promote and distribute their work locally and globally, finding new ways to establish their independence in the network of an 'old-school' record industry. Sounds Like Techno presents four chapters, each consisting of sound bites, text quotes, narration, interviews and voice-overs. It can be viewed as a multimedia collage using a Flash player, or by browsing the text only version. The site features interviews and music from some of the most important names in techno including Detroit DJs, Stacey Pullen, Derrick May and Juan Atkins, Kraftwerk's Ralf Huetter, Australia's Voiteck, Richie Rich, Ollie Olsen, Brewster B and Steve Law, and many others from Australia, Europe, USA and the UK. The four chapters cover: Detroit Roots The story of techno starts in Detroit, USA, and this chapter looks at the social and cultural environment that paved the way for a new electronic sound. Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, in the quiet middle class town of Belleville outside of Detroit, would become know as the 'Holy Trinity of Techno', and soon inspire generations to come. The chapter acknowledges the enormous influence of Kraftwerk on the creation of techno and how the club scene in Chicago became the testing ground for the new sound. In the late 1980s, the Detroit sound was named 'techno' and migrated across the Atlantic to the UK, before reaching Europe in the early 90s where it mutated further. Germany embraced the sound, with the creation of the influential Tresor label marking techno as an independent force in the commercial music industry. Australian Story 1988 in the UK is known as the 'Summer of Love' and introduced the acid house sounds to clubs in Melbourne and Sydney. The Commerce Club in Melbourne became the first techno club in Australia and DJs began opening their own record stores to get music out to techno fans. In the early 90s, warehouse parties, outdoor raves and techno clubs took off, and at the same time, a creative community emerged around the scene incorporating design, fashion and visual arts. In 1995, when the riot police shut down a party in Sydney Park with a baton charge, the scene in Sydney changed. Now, dance parties around Australia are mostly big business in the music industry, but techno still exists underground. Man and Machine This chapter looks at the tools and technology of techno. There is a long tradition of experimental music in Australia, from the early days of bands like Whirlywirld and Severed Heads. But as techno came to Australia, more people were inspired to make their own music. Early techno DJs and producers used synthesisers and drum machines, but digital technology and in particular the digital sampler has opened up new ways of making music. Today, do-it-yourself production and self-publishing has become a reality. Future Music So what shape is the Australian

Re: (313) Fabrice Lig in Singapore on 05 June and 06 June
Hey ! Of course feel free to make some links between Australian scene and me; I heard so many good things about the scene ;-). You know, electronic scene is big, here in Europe, but Deep, Funky Detroit techno still a small scene in Europe too...But Its only true music lovers, and I'm rarely disapointed about this kind of gigs, always prepared with love. Why are you surprise about this album on Raygun ? ;-) I putted 5 x 12'' under fabrice Lig Bug Orchestra nickname + a cd album for Bug Orchestra too...Its the first techno Label who thrusted in me few years ago. I think its a logical progression with them. And about DEMF, we talked about a booking for a live act but finaly they cancelled, because of some money choices to do...Maybe next year...who knows. We stay in touch anyway, will let you know about the tour around Raygun release. I will definitely put you in touch with some people here. It's possible they know Donovan. The Australian crew get on very well with the Singapore posse. I am surprised you're doing an album with Raygun! They get very good distribution here. I always equated them with breaks! We'll hook up some press for you. I just got back from Detroit. I was involved with the Movement program. We ran into financial difficulties with funding the program but everything else was a big success. I don't know how Derrick pulled it off but he did. Australia is pretty cool. It's a small scene but very cool. Keep in touch! I'll start a tour for my Raygun album's release in september...Probably a tour in Japan, in Europe too. (313) Lots of Detroit House and one Techno Record
OK, so I've been trying unsuccessfully to post all last week, until I just realized I been sending from the wrong address. Doh. Anywhoo... just bought a bunch of records. Only one of them was techno (sorta): Oxtongue - Delight - Kompakt Pop This is the debut on this new sublabel. Really beautiful, ethereal melodic vocodering. Thought I'd add to that, some of the new(er) (mostly) house I've picked out. Via PIccadilly Records: Amp Fiddler : Love And War EP - 12 (unbelievable) Brain On Drugs : Drugs - 12 (Chateau Flight Remix - thanks to whoever recommended it here a while back) Bugz In The Attic Feat. Wunnmi : Zombie - 12 Cesaria Evora : Remixes By Kerri Chandler - 12 (a nice companion to the Braddock and Craig treatments) Madlib : Tracks From Shades Of Blue - 12 (Blue Note allowed Madlib to crack their vaults - good for one of the tracks) Moodymann : Silence In The Secret Garden - 2xLP (Wow) Moodymann : Silence In The Secret Garden EP - 12 (needed for B1) Osunlade Feat. Jaffa : Native Tongue Revisited Pt.2 - 12 (great dub on B2) Pal Joey : Thong Test - 12 (samples the Thong Song - don't dismiss it, you've gotta hear it. B side is even better. Possibly the best song in this bunch) Reunion : Strange Attention - Seiji Mixes - 12 Soho : More Hot Music - 12 (reissue of classic Pal Joey track with new version) Stateless : Art Of No State - 2xLP Kaidi Tatham Dego : Got Me Puzzled - 12 Three Chairs : All Over - 12 (this one's a bit of a grungy recording, no??? - anyone else think it samples Patternis by Circulation?) 2Day 2Moro : Disney On Acid / Rubber Feet - 7 (new Omniverse thing) The Visioneers : 55 Dollars / Visioneers - 7 (old Omniverse thing) The Visioneers : Days Gone By / The World Is Yours - 7 (old Omniverse thing) Rick Wade : Big Foot EP - 12 (excellent B-sides) Rick Wade : I Can't Take It - 12 Via Vinyl Junkies: Artist = Jay Dee Title = The Official Instrumental Series - Unreleased Vol 1 Label = Bling 47 Format = LP Artist = The Detroit Experiment ( inc Carl Craig / Amp Fiddler / Francisco Mora / Regina Carter / Karriem Riggins... ) Title = The Detroit Experiment - DE Label = Planet E Format = LP Double Artist = Tread Title = Tread 3 Label = Third Ear Format = LP Double Artist = Silent Partners ( Joshua Mark E Quark ) Title = Down By Dub ( inc Joshua Remix ) Label = Hi Phen Format = 12inch Artist = Rotating Assembly ( feat Theo Parrish / Marcellus Pittman / Jerrald James... ) Title = Rusty Waters Label = Sound Signature Format = 12inch Tristan === Text/Mixes: http://www.phonopsia.co.uk Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: (313) Jeff mills and richie at movement
As a side note: I just read the Jeff Mills interview in the Spring 2003 Straight No Chaser and he said he enjoys or prefers to play to a mixed crowd over a more techno audience, I would assume because he can play a more diverse set without anyone saying negative things about him. There was a recent discussion about this on his website as well. Personally, I prefer diversity over strict techno and I enjoyed Mills' set immensely. And the mixer failing is a lot better than hail, lightning, and frogs coming from the sky. ;) MEK Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: 313 Detroit 313@hyperreal.org il.com.au cc: Subject: Re: (313) Jeff mills and richie at movement 06/08/03 06:46 AM I really enjoyed it and, prior to getting back online, all I heard were good reports. Everyone enjoyed hearing the old hip-hop. I think you have to take into account the context. I think as techno fans/followers/purists/etc you have to take into account that you're a minority at the festival. How many people there have any Axis records at home? He's playing to a large number of people in the main arena who have no idea what 'techno' is. They may be kids who listen to 50 Cent in their rides, rave to Tiesto, or their parents and came out of curiousity, or people who know The Wizard, not Jeff Mills. That's not a good or bad thing, it's just the reality. It's a challenge. Of course it's going to be an 'intro to Jeff Mills 2003' of sorts. You're just hearing one side of Jeff Mills, and if you go to Sonar, say, you'll hear another side and another side again in a club. I think his approach was perfect. It was hard to recreate the momentum after the mixer went, but I think he did well. -- From: ian cheshire [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: lisa [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jim Bishop [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: (313) Jeff mills and richie at movement Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 7:15 PM but I was hoping he'd play a wicked, bangin' set and he didn't. To be honest I knew that would never happen cos its was that special set where it wasn't about the banging stuff it was the Wizard in true radio mix mode...I heard classics that I thought I would never hear again , his choice was unreal if you ask me, something for everyone :) -Original Message- From: lisa [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 28 May 2003 04:52 To: Jim Bishop Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Jeff mills and richie at movement I've only seen Mills once before Movement 03 and I was a bit disappointed in his choice of sets - it seemed almost like he was doing a 'best of/hits' set hopping around different types of music but not necessarily in a manner that flowed well. I know it's not the best thing to go into a performance hoping for something, but I was hoping he'd play a wicked, bangin' set and he didn't. Like I said before I think he played a lot of good tunes and I liked watching him with the turntables (there were 3, right?). I didn't mind that he did cut-overs because some of that worked. What kinda sucked with that was some of the cut-over points he chose cut out verses or measures of the song that would have worked left it feeling 'short' - like he stopped too soon and it wasn't pleasant/cool. There were a few wrecks on the decks, but maybe he was a bit frazzled from those early equipment problems? Like he got thrown off? I dunno. I have more stuff to put up and will do that soon - just a bit tired from getting back home tonight from Detroit after being without a computer since Friday! Hmmm, speaking of computers... Did anyone else notice how crappy the internet access was @ the Sony booth? I mean, it was great they had it but using satellite/wireless gave weird results - like sometimes really fast and other times worse than 56k (like 10 minutes just to load the google start page)! When the sun was out the connections were pretty good. :) Oh well, it was free... lisa Jim Bishop wrote: I will say it cause many of you are thinking it.
