Re: (313) Christian Morgenstern dead

I'm writing a news item about this very unfortunate occurrance and whilst
looking Morgenstern up saw him named as a member of Kitbuilders. He's also
said to have recorded as Benway, Human Target and Visco Space. Can anyone
confirm any of this? Any other known identities/collaborations? I'd like to
have my facts straight for this, but am on deadline.

Thanks in advance,

RE: (313) Quadrant

2003-07-08 Thread Dave Parsons

As far as I am aware there is only one Quadrant 12 on planet e - The
Quadrant ep was originally issued on black vinyl. Then apparently Carl
found some extra labels (IMO some of the best label art around...) and
proceeded to press up a further batch on blue vinyl.

Infinition is a track on the Quadrant ep. Both the black and blue vinyl
copies are identical.

The quadrant ep was also licenced to RS with additional tracks -
certainly worth tracking down.

2003-07-08 Thread alex . bond
Andrew kindly sent me some info which he wanted to post to the list, but
couldn't for some reason..

so here it is, I think there's a couple of Q's in there that I don't know
the answers to

First up, did any UK people tape the South Bank Show? I missed it and
would really appreciate seeing it! Money/music/drugs are offered as
incentive...(now where's that aspirin I lost?) But seriously, I was
talking about this the other day with some friends, this very topic! We
were listening to Sunlight and it was freaking us out, but the last LP
he did was a bit of a let down. I dunno, but I was expecting some kind
of amazing futuristic journey and it just didn't happen for me. Did
anyone check the huge sample of Strings of Life on there? Recalling
from memory it was kind of played in reverse, but not really done (dare
I say it) with any real imagination or spark. Plus it wasn't credited
(wonder how Derrick feels about that?). Maybe I need to listen again...

I dunno, I know nothing about jazz. I have a few Miles Davis LPs, some
Pharoh Sanders stuff and that, but I've never been able to find much
 more
stuff that I'm really enthusistic about (mainly because I don't even
 know
what to look for). 'In a Silent way' is something I like...

Maybe JT can recommend some stuff for us for the list? or anyone else?
 top
5 jazz lp's to find that we might like??
 would be interested to know.

I'm not yet really a proper head with jazz, but I'd say if you haven't
checked John Coltrane yet, get 'A Love Supreme' and 'Ballads' as soon
as possible. Get anything, actually. (Although his later stuff can be
quite mental, free jazz sort of stuff.) If you like 'In a Silent Way'
then 'Ballads' will be very pleasing. Oh, and 'Giant Steps', this is an
amazing LP, nice mix of bopping and slower jams. ('Naima' is a big tune
 from that one, beautiful.)

Somebody mentioned McCoy Tyner (Coltrane's piano man on the
aforementioned LPs) and I have to mention this track of his, from the
'Fly With The Wind' LP, it's called 'Beyond the Sun'. It's very
beautiful, verging on classical. I think it's been sampled, maybe it's
on one of those 'Back to Mine' comps. (Fila Brazilia or Zero 7.) Anyway
 it's amazing, melancholic, melodic genius!

But jazz is such a huge field it's hard to say what to avoid really! I
guess anything that isn't the modern 'Smooth Jazz' that gets played on
Jazz FM is worth looking at. What I've found is that there are so many
surprises to find in even the most obscure, beard-and-wooly-jumper jazz
fusion LPs, or the oldest 1920s swing. What I've found is that on most
of the LPs I've bought there's at least one or two really funky jams,
or maybe just something that makes you think harder. The musicianship
is second-to-none, I mean which other genre do drummers get to do their
own LPs? That guarantees some wicked drumwork somewhere in the record!
(Check Elvin Jones, Norman Conners, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa)

More immediately, I'd say get Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Dizzy
Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Miles, Sonny Rollins, in fact just read up
on jazz history and get the big names in, then check their band members
out, just branch out from there. I scour the charity shops and £1 bins
and just buy up anything remotely jazz (among other things ;) but
that's also sample-hunting. For listening pleasure get these guys' LPs,
maybe from a chain store so you can take advantage of their returns
 policy. (ha ha)

 Hope this helps,

 Andrew

I don't know what 'schtum' means but OH NO... this is how rumours get
started folks!! It was wishful thinking and absolutely nothing more.

I just said something (after hearing SS-18) like wouldn't it be nice,
it's about time for one, etc. and it was an joking open suggestion to
HARDWAX... :) :) that it sure would be cool if something like that
could ever happen, etc.. because I found some similarities in
mood/sound.

For the record there is no such a collaboration thing in existence nor
do I have any reason to believe there ever will be.

Alas it's just a wish... If anyone passed these emails along to anyone
OUTISIDE of 313, please pass this message along to dispel the rumor
before it goes anywhere. I know Moritz has expressed frustration in the
past about many untrue random rumors about their music and I certainly
don't want to contribute to that phenomenon.

Alex is correct:

Original planet e release with the original coloured label - black vinyl
1st issue - blue vinyl 2nd issue (I think around 200-300 copies of this
blue vinyl with original coloured labels were pressed).

Followed by the RS release then the planet-e light blue vinyl reissue
with alternative label.

Can't go wrong with the other Parisians. Check DJ Gregory, Gilb'r, Soha,
I:Cube (anyone catching the Versatile thread???), Julien Jabre, Chateau
Flight, Kemit Sources (the new entry), etc. Paris is rocking it this
millenium. Not doing precisely the same things as Braddock, but they have
their own similarly-compelling sound. You would probably love DJ Gregory's
'Attend 1' on Kitsune (which I heard a couple of times @ DEMF, and has
generally been a favorite of some Detroit DJs from what I can tell - in case
anyone is questioning the topicality of this), which I totally missed last
year somehow, and have been caning to death so far this Summer. T o o n
!!! Also, the Soha stuff on Basic and Africanism would surely hook you up.

Enjoy!

Their trying to sound like Basic Channel how disappointing.
That sound is almost becoming a bad cliche.

don't be ridiculous, LFO Frequencies was the best album by the duo.

It doesn't. He already did that album - what's wrong with just listening to
that, if it's all you want? He's also done a few better albums since then.

Re: (313) Tour de France 03 video

2003-07-08 Thread Jason
When they played live in Paris last year, they produced music which
seemed somehow to absorb many different elements of electronic music
from the past 20 years, including Basic Channel's trademark incessant
repetitive dub AND Jeff Mill's intricate string-laden Axis soundscapes
without being swamped by either- a pretty incredible feat I thought

But LFO is no longer a duo, and hasn't been for ages. It's rediculous to
expect him to rehash what he was doing over a decade ago. His new stuff
sounds way more like Advance than anything they did as a duo, but it is also
a huge leap forward from that, or the production work he's been doing in the
last few years. Exceedingly complex stuff. I like the old stuff too, and
think his best stuff was from the mid-'90s, as Clark, but I am still
completely excited for this new album. Certainly one of the most exciting
things to happen this year, and really it sounds quite different from
anything I've heard to date.
