(313) Huckaby in the 319 (Iowa City)!

2003-07-20 Thread Kent williams
In the off chance that anyone from Iowa on 313 isn't also on one of the Iowa-
specific mailing lists, I wanted to mention that Mike Huckaby, Dave Herbert
and Tom Gustavson (aka DJ TBA) will be spinning tonight at Gabe's in Iowa
City at 330 E Washington.

If you get there before 10, and there's some sort of RAWK Show going on,
don't worry, it's the early show and Mike, Dave, and Tom are the late show.

looking for some new house 12 (or double 12 for that matter)

specifically something with lyrics that actually carry some weight to
them
 - something beyond my love will lift you up or love will set you free
 etc.
if that is how the lyrics go then it better be damn good delivery/singer
 and music

curious to see/hear what other people have or like

doesn't have to be strictly Detroit but should sit well next to it

 NY/Detroit - BodySoul/Zanzibar a plus

2003-07-20 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I still think it was Francois' own mix, and I can't recall how I found that
out other than the first time I heard it was on NYE when Francois played
here in Melbourne. A DJ pal of mine here reckons it's Thomas Schumacher's
version, but I thought that was a different one again.
I am pretty certain it's not Stacey's remix, which I have somewhere - I
worded my last post on this badly.

i wonder if this was the same version stacey pullen played in
melbourne a few weeks ago - sounds like it might be. it was
 pretty cool.

There is a stacey pullen rmx on the flip of the disc with the carl craig rmx
from memory - not sure if that would be the one - Ive not listened to it in
bloody ages so cant really remem what its like :/

Yeah she was! She was married to Trevor Horn too.
I was just looking for her solo album from the early 90s the other day in a
second hand store. She rocks! Propaganda are the best! They are sooo slept

Claudia Brucken was the singer from Propaganda, no?

Yeah, I got that Golden Hour CD and gave it to a friend in return for the
repackaged Dare/Love Dancing album. It was interesting, not sure if you'd
play it endlessly though.

Maybe this has already been mentioned, but a good number of The Future-era
stuff has been recently re-released by them on a record named Golden hour
of the future, including the excellent Dance like a star, also available
 with remixes on an EP...

Well before the League, they where called The Future, check
 this site for
more info - this will help explain most of the history here
 in Sheffield:

 http://www.blindyouth.co.uk/

Richard X put out all the old records on Black Melody...

Dance Like A Star stands out...

what's the deal with the mid-late 70s material?
Well it never gets mentioned does it, history cuts straight
 to 81/82, which
is why I was asking about Ken and Greg, Alan Oldham plus Greg
 Wilson from
the UK. I'm not interested in who was first - just the facts.
 Every book
I've read doesn't seem to contain the info I need, and as you
 start to cross
match a lot of it, it just doesn't add up.

 md

I've also been digging through all the old
 League/BEF/Clock DVA and Cabs
stuff, you'd be surprised just how techno some of the stuff from
  74-78 is...

  I wouldn't! ;-) . Although, I'm more familiar with the post
 82 stuff -
what's the deal with the mid-late 70s material? Would this
 be even earlier
incarnations of Heaven 17 (which I believe included members
 of what later
became the League.) Any tracks you care to mention?

You get a friend to stand by you at the decks and look like your tough

I was DJing with Clark Warner and we were supposed to be doing a
downtempo tag team set, and both of us had been looking forward to this
 for a while.
However, this was not going to be the case..as we had several girls
come up to us repeatedly during the early hours of the night asking for
 us to play hip hop.

After ignoring them for a good hour, one girl finally came up with a
stack of CDs. She went to her car and brought them in for us to play.
While this was a very thoughtful gesture on her part, the less than
pleasant side of me wanted to torch her CDs with my lighter, or play
them at extremely low pitches soaked in some Pioneer DJ EFX.

Things only got better when the pack of banshees decided to start
yelping the mantra hip hop! hip hop! over some record Clark was
 playing.

i was playing a club one time mostly techno, and this girl came up to me, and
told me that it ( i assume she ment the music) needed more scratching in it,
and then asked me to step aside so she could show me how to do it when i
asked her what records she planned to use ( i always like to let them think
they might have a chance with their requests) she said oh it looks like you
have enough for US to play all nightthen she got mad cause she actually
thought i was gonna let her scratch my records.it was pretty funny

Once I was playing on chill out floor in a club and I started my set with

starts complaining that it's about time for some beats to come in.
The weirdest gig I had was playing at new years party of Slovenian ministry
of culture. I got all weird kind of requests. The funniest one was a girl
that came to me and asked me if I could play something more danceable, like

so is it Phil Keiran?

it's thomas schumacher and it isn't a remix either (well ok the synth
bits may be a sample)...i think Kaori is the
singer, so that bit isn't remixed.she does a good job of the vocal as
well

I've heard Sean Cusick and DJ Stryke play this version as well only
thing is that its so short :(

I guess its time to loop it and make an extended mix myself?

Lookin forward to hearin the Agoria mix of Big Fun however. :)

Ramon

Oh dear. I guess this means I'll have gone from having seen the penultimate
TG gig (Culver City, California, 1981) to having seen the 3rd-to-last TG gig.

Losing bragging rights is such a bother :)
