Re: (313) Work posts and blank
LOL Exam time actually that's a great question I'd have to say that Detroit Techno and House is really good because it has the ability to tap into and extract some deep and personal emotions without being magniloquent and flatulent. It continues a musical tradition that has carried through the blues and jazz - blue notes, bent pitches, polyrhythms, syncopation, etc. but push it forward into the future with new technology. Even still, it translates back into traditional forms - the orchestrated version of Jaguar is a good example. All the tension is still there without any advanced technological instruments. It's timeless (for the most part). It has soul because those above elements somehow have the ability to speak to the soul. There is both sorrow and great hope and joy in the music. But the joy is not the syrupy type you find in many other styles of music. It's rooted in the sorrow. It knows joy because it knows the sadness. Plus you can dance to it without being all pilled up;) I think Detroit Techno and House should be sold next to James Brown, Al Green, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk, Robert Johnson, Mahalia Jackson, and Kraftwerk of course. when will our grades be posted? Re: (313) Work posts and blank
I read somewhere (hmmm- Generation Ecstasy maybe?) that Trance music (with a capital T) sounds as if it is formulated on a grid system and is very regimented. Nothing is out of place and events happen in a grid-like pattern. Where as house and techno (and I'd put the emphasis on Detroit and D influenced) is much less so and there is space for improvisation and the unexpected. I think it was Reyolds who actually wrote the passage I'm thinking of - I'll see if I can dig it up MEK Michael.Elliot-Knight @fallon.com To: Maxim Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: 313@hyperreal.org 12/10/03 08:12 PMSubject: Re: (313) Work posts and blank LOL Exam time actually that's a great question I'd have to say that Detroit Techno and House is really good because it has the ability to tap into and extract some deep and personal emotions without being magniloquent and flatulent. Re: (313) Work posts and blank
here's a great passage from Deep Blues by Robert Palmer that I think can be applied to Detroit techno house Here he is addressing blue notes This is the expressive core of the hollers, work songs, spirituals that have not been substantially influenced by white church music, and later the blues, especially Delta blues. You can hear it, or suggestions of it, in African vocal music from Senegambia to the Congo, and it has special significance among the Akan-speaking people of Ghana, who suffered the depredations of English and American slavers through most of the period of the slave trade. Akan is a pitch-tone language in which rising emotion is expressed by falling pitch, and in Akan song rising emotion is often expressed by flattening the third. There seems to be a direct continuity between this tendency and blues singing, for blues singers habitually use falling pitches to raise the emotional temperature of a performance. Usually these falling pitches are thirds, but Muddy Waters and other vocalists and guitarists from the Delta tradition also employ falling fifths, often with shattering emotional effect. It's not a great leap to follow the tradition - MEK

(313)Old Detroit radio online?
My girlfriend, suffering under the heat of a humid Sydney day, has been on the phone to her family this morning and for some strange reason is missing the snow and cold of detroit. Does anyone know of any old detroit radio show mixes from the 80s online? electrifiying mojo would be great, but any radio shows with an ad for 'mel far superstar'(sp?) would probably cheer her up. james

Not that big a fan of Chris and Cosey, Liked her painting more than the music... Strange, I would say the Hot on the Heels (which you like) was pretty much a blueprint for the Chris and Cosey sound. They certainly came closest to pursuing that sound out of all of the post-TG projects. Remember also, at this stage, Chris Carter probably had more musical input into TG than the rest of the band put together.

I also disagree about Chris, Sleazy played a massive party, and so did Gen... Musically, I really don't think this is the case. Sleazy did develop his musical input over time, but was initailly really just there in a consulting role and was responsible for visuals, etc. Just how gifted Gen is musically is demonstrated by the awful standard of most PTV releases after Sleazy, Balance, Tibet, etc left him to his own devices.

Sleazy did develop his musical input over time, but was initailly really just there in a consulting role and was responsible for visuals, etc. If this is about who can play better, then yes Chris would win, but without Sleazy and Gen it wouldn't have happened and it wouldn't have been the same - both these guys are excellent instigators and ideas people, and boiling it down to consulting is, I believe, a bit of an insult. I've worked with loads of people that can't write or play a single note but man do they have the ideas - which if anything this more important, as it's easy to hire someone in. KLF would be a good example of this working method... Just how gifted Gen is musically is demonstrated by the awful standard of most PTV releases after Sleazy, Balance, Tibet, etc left him to his own devices. Again, disagree - I've worked with Gen, and he is very talented in the studio and is excellent at on the spot ideas as well as old tricks that can be used. Makes a good cup of tea as well! PTV have put out some excellent work fella - Force/Dreams are brilliant and Gen has does some excellent work without any of the above - of course this is purely subject and as I was kicking around with them a little bit one sided but I also like a lot of Coil/Current 93 stuff as well. If Fred G would have got his way back in the late 80's, PTV would have been a very different story... Alex, I'll dig out a load of old stuff and put a list together... Martin

Thanks Dan for putting this up on the site. It brought back a lot of good memories of techno geekdom. Re: (313)Old Detroit radio online?
Does anyone know of any old detroit radio show mixes from the 80s online? Would you take 1990? Go to http://www.AlanOldham.COM/ and grab the Fast Forward mixes ... they're fantastic. Of course, there's always the (downloadable versions of) The Wizard mixes on the DeepHousePage site (requires Real Player 8 or later): http://deephouse.biostat.wisc.edu/drivee/wizarddbwjlb1989a.rm http://deephouse.biostat.wisc.edu/drivee/wizarddbwjlb1989b.rm Or, if she just wants that late 80's Detroit flava (not necessarily a radio show mix), there's always the Derrick May Music Institute sets: http://rose107.biostat.wisc.edu/derrickmaymusicinstitute1988a.rm http://rose107.biostat.wisc.edu/derrickmaymusicinstitute1988b.rm - Greg
(313) the warhol: JOHN ARNOLD
the warhol: Good Fridays FRIDAY DECEMBER 12th 2003 THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM presents a live performance by Detroit electronic nu jazz composer/dj JOHN ARNOLD touring in support of his acclaimed new UBIQUITY RECORDS CD/LP Neighborhood Science www.ubiquityrecords.com/john_arnold.html www.ubiquityrecords.com/ur136.html Over the past few years John Arnold has risen to public attention along with a new wave of Detroit producers and artists. Neighborhood Science includes appearances from some of those peers like keyboard maestro and vocalist Amp Fiddler (of P-Funk All-stars and Genuine Records), vocalist and multi-talented musician Ayro (Omoa music) and producer and vocalist Malik Alstin (collaborator with Roy Davis jr). They just happen to be from around the way, and helped shape the John Arnold sound on Neighborhood Science, his debut album. My neighborhood is brimming with talent, we all live and breathe music. I really wanted to present this scene on my record, because it defines who I am, states Arnold. Neighborhood Science is an album that works in a club as well as at home but Arnold purposefully avoided making something more accessible for the sake of sales. Multi-layered soulful tracks retain an electronic edge that works on the dance floor and nods to the influence of dons of the Detroit scene like Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, and Derrick May. When I listen to records for the first time it's as a DJ. I look for the tracks I can play out first. If I like an artist because they make great dance music and then they come out with a record that is far removed from this, I feel let down. I have always felt that dancing is a big part of experiencing music. Once people are dancing, they are open to anything you want to throw at them, explains Arnold. Within electronic music circles formally trained artists often struggle to reconcile their academic backgrounds and the unconventional DIY ethos of club culture, yet John Arnold's classical guitar education has expanded, not limited, his imagination. I was able to make this whole record in my bedroom with the help of some friends. And you have to understand how all the instruments fit together and how to play them of course. The training just gives me a wider pallet and understanding of music to work with. I think having the experience of working and understanding different instruments and music helped me produce a wide variety of sounds and colors, says Arnold. Carl Craig invited Arnold to perform his first-ever live electronic gig at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), and Derrick May, who picked up his Sparkle EP for Transmat Records' sister label, Fragile, asked him back to perform in 2003. He's released a second Transmat EP titled Four Minutes? has 2 singles out on Ubiquity, and jammed on records by fellow Detroit acts John Beltran, the Detroit Escalator Co and Recloose. Prior to John Arnold's live performance, local DJs John E. and Noah Nine will perform. All-Ages. Show starts promptly at 6pm. Ends at 10:00 pm. $3 Cover. RE: (313) monolake in oz
Yup. Foo Man Chunes are playing host to Monolake. I think it's next weekend at the Gaelic club. Also on the Sydney front - a few of us are putting a night on at the Sly Fox in Enmore tomorrow night. It's free and there are cheap cocktails and I reckon you stand a fair chance of enjoying the music as well. We start at 6 and are going till close (probably about 2 or 3am). Be great to see you there! RE: (313) Work posts and blank
Michael, Your answers remind me of the Gil Scott-Heron poem used on Moodymann's Amerika record--Bicentennial Blues. That line kills me when he says: The blues grew up, but America did not. How true Cornell West has also discussed the connection between African vocal traditions, slavery, blues, jazz, soul, He did an interview on Tavis Smiley's show a few months back where CW said something like: The blues has hope, not the pollyannic hope of pop music, but a mature hope, a blood soaked, tear stained hope. Well, I don't think I could explain any better what I appreciate about Detroit techno/house than that.
