But others perhaps don't or enjoy engaging with them. Herbert's views are political. These inform all of his work, not just Radioboy. His Big Band project is another that is quite overt about this. On stage, his musicians tear up Conservative newspapers and sample the effects, to name but one thing he does. It's an amazingly entertaining and original way to convey his protest. Furthermore, some of his record sleeves have recommended reading of works that support his beliefs. It is this refusal to unquestioningly accept the status quo that is also evident in his innovative approach to music production, which has made him one of the most exciting artists around. - Original Message - From: /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: 11 January 2004 20:11 Subject: Re: (313) radio boy one final time perhaps, but then thats where I come in. Re: (313) radio boy one final time
It's tough. How do we try and oppose what we all know doesn't make sense unless we take it out of the 'unspoken' and start to make it part of the fabric of our lives? I suppose that includes our music too. (Not all of it though, naturally.) It's hard to get political and remain musically relevant or entertaining, but history is littered with great examples, from 'The Message' to 'Shipbuilding' to 'Message To The Majors', the list is huge. The trick seems to be to avoid that 'ick' factor, and make the message essential to the musical point. Whether Herbert does that or not is debatable. Also, are his criticisms all that devastating? Perhaps to the 13-year-old who hasn't discovered Chomsky yet. Maybe that's partly what some people (as adults) find annoying? Although saying that, it takes courage to stand up and put your views on the table, and I applaud Herbert for doing so. I don't think it can be ignored any longer. Peace, Andrew Jason Brunton wrote: I really can't be bothered with most of Herbert's musical output- it's been a long time since I bought any of his records but I did see him play at Sonar a year or two ago and was mildly amused by his live show. I've definitelty got a bit of respect for his decision to bring real world issues into the musical arena though and if you had paid to see him you would almost certainly know that he would be pushing his opinions at you- he's been pretty vocal (and articulate) about them for quite some time now (possibly room for critisism based on preaching to the converted I suppose but that would be churlish). cheers Jason On 11 Jan 2004, at 22:05, /0 wrote: its just my opinion. Matthew Herbert is trying to do more than just entertain you, Joe - he's no organ grinder - he takes his music very very seriously and is attempting to bind his politics with his music - so it is redundant of you to complain that you're paying him to play you music - the politics is inseparable from the music. -Original Message- From: /0 [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, January 11, 2004 8:11 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) radio boy one final time perhaps, but then thats where I come in. Totally - Sonar is an essential yearly fixture! A perfect blend of music both classic and cutting edge, in one of the finest surroundings you could wish for - if you haven't been before I can't recommend it highly enough ;-) There are actually a few conferences and panel events upstairs there, but nothing on the scale of the other festivals - but there are also a huge amount of peripheral events happening throughout the city - a lot of related installations, performances etc... The city itself is a cultural haven all year round, so you can never be short of something decent to go to... - Original Message - From: Robert Taylor To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, January 12, 2004 9:34 AM Subject: RE: (313) attending music festivals? (313) Apologies and (perhaps) the last word
Hey folks, I'd like to apologize for ruffling feathers about the Herbert issue. I think we should probably kill the thread and agree to disagree. As I'm sure is the case for many of you, politics has become (especially during the last few years) an issue of nearly equal importance to music for me. So I find myself getting passionate about situations that involve a melding of the two. I never meant to disparage Herbert's vision. I think his music is beautiful, I admire the depth of his conviction, and I agree with everything he's trying to say. My issue is only with the manner in which he says it, and even that (clearly) is a matter of contention. But it makes me sad to see an issue like this creating divisivness among people who probably completely agree with him. We have bigger enemies, and bickering amongst ourselves distracts from those larger issues. So, can we kill it? -- Dennis DeSantis www.dennisdesantis.com

So, can we kill it? In a way, it's a shame that we have to kill it, because it's an interesting debate and one that I'd be quite keen on following and participating in if this subject didn't tend to provoke such vituperative responses from so many... RE: (313) radio boy one final time
313 quote of this year so far : The Mall has replaced the Church as the place people get their shared values. Speaking of which, did anyone compile a 313 quote list for last year? -Pete -Original Message- From: Kent williams [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, January 11, 2004 10:27 AM To: 313 list Subject: (313) radio boy one final time Not to turn this into an argument, Dennis but I disagree with you that Herbert buying a few consumer items and then destroying them is nullified as a social comment by the fact that he spent money on them. Any he spent on the Radioboy tour was a rounding error economically for the corporations he targeted. Here's why I disagree: The wanton destruction of consumer items carries with it a sense of desecration. A Big Mac or a Britney Spears CD is only incidentally a utilitarian object. It is also a symbol, a talisman, a token of desire. What you're really buying is the lifestyle, aspirations, and dreams they have been crafted to represent. Buying and consuming them is a sacrament of global capitalism. Every day we make choices about what we consume, and most people literally buy into the dominant culture without giving it a second thought. The Mall has replaced the Church as the place people get their shared values. So ripping a pair of Gap Boxers equivalent to burning a flag. Will one guy change the world by doing it? Maybe not. Maybe he'll make a few people think about where their food and clothes and music comes from.

RE: (313) I'll see you Luke Slater mate!
I don't agree... Wireless was very good IMHO, with All exhale being an absolutely amazing electroclash (or whatever) single. Alright on top wasn't absolutely excellent, but I love the singer's voice (used to be the singer with The Aloof, a perfect example of underrated act...), so I found this album very enjoyable... Haven't checked the new stuff yet though, and I agree these latest records find him straying far from his Detroit-inspired sound of the Pacefrog years... RE: (313) I'll see you Luke Slater mate!
It seemed completely pointless for him to appear with Slater, as his vox were perfectly suited to the edgy and hazy vibe that were synonymous with Aloof. I can't see that the joining of forces was done for any other reason than commercial success (nothing wrong with that in itself), but when the music is severely lacking you have to ask was it worth it. IMHO, the last decent stuff that he did was Freak Funk but even that was lacking in parts, or rather, pointing towards his new direction. I think the big hang up with Luke S is that he used to be so damned fcking good, and in comparison, his output now is just weak. Remember Morganistic? P.A.S.? 11th Plain?? I'm sorry, but Electroclash does not cut it when you have a recording history such as that. IMO, of course. ;0) -Original Message- From: Cobert, Gwendal [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 12 January 2004 4:19 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) I'll see you Luke Slater mate! I suggest trying to remember the good things he's done from our point of view. I'll start the ball rolling: 'In The Shadow' by Morganistic, on Irdial, I think around 1995. Its already out in Japan and managed to pick it up from soulseek. I will be buying it on vinyl though, its sounding great. Still digesting it fully but my initial opinion is that its decent stuff although not ground breaking, more of a continuation of a theme, that being the Nu soul west london vibe these guys have written down in the past few years. But with Dego, Kaidi and Daz at the controls I think it would be difficult to make a bad record. A few tracks are really doing it for me such as Breakers Yard and Natty Head and its got some great downtempo moments to where it strays almost into Erika Badu territory although its Bembe Segue providing the vocals! Great stuff and a nice west London start for 2004. Speaking of which I hear Bugz in the Attic have just remixed Amp-Fiddler. My fondest memory of Luke Slater was him hiding under the counter all day at JellyJam records becauase he was too fu*ked up to deal with oneone, and leaving Tony from Ugly Records to man the shop all day. He spent all day telling people Luke wasnt in, when he was actually a paranoid wreck cowering beneath him! A funny guy. These were the days when he didnt even want to put his name on his records he was so 'ardcore! Who remembers his Lloyd Owes Me a Packet stuff, or even better his Transclusent 12?? RE: (313) Apologies and (perhaps) the last word
please see the tail end of my final response in regards to the level of polite (or not so polite) debate. i find it rather disappointing that I am in the minority in feeling that an international forum such as 313 can't be used for passionate debate, for fear of someone being offended. there was a time- not that long ago- where seriously intense 'bile and venom' debates (about issues much smaller than Herbert) were the norm. and frankly- i got a lot more out of this list back then. politeness doesn't get to the truth of most issues- passion does. On Mon, 12 Jan 2004, Brendan Nelson wrote: -Original Message- From: Dennis DeSantis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 12 January 2004 10:34 But it makes me sad to see an issue like this creating divisivness among people who probably completely agree with him. ...bickering amongst ourselves distracts from those larger issues. I completely agree - it's been strange to watch the rudeness levels of this thread grow as the discussion continues, over what seem to me to be fairly trivial differences of opinion rather than fundamental disagreements over the principles behind the Radioboy project. So, can we kill it? In a way, it's a shame that we have to kill it, because it's an interesting debate and one that I'd be quite keen on following and participating in if this subject didn't tend to provoke such vituperative responses from so many... RE: (313) I'll see you Luke Slater mate!
i'll agree that the last album was disappointing, and i've not heard the new stuff... but wireless was an extremely challenging record that had almost nothing to do with electroclash (although the electro was definately there) if anything- wireless was a left-turn into more complex territory that the hard techno that was slater's predictable overe by that point. and- both body freefall, electric inform and all exhale had some shit-kicker remixes. On Mon, 12 Jan 2004, Cobert, Gwendal wrote: I don't agree... (313) A complete Detroit Techno collection
Hi, Wondering if the 313 folk can help out here. I visit a message board based in the UK which is primarily concerned with rock music, but the members are open to all styles, and I'm regarded as something of a lone voice in the desert for all forms of electronic dance music. Most people like your usual dance fare, e.g Chemical Bros, Leftfield, basically the stuff that mainstream magazines like. The community is fairly close-knit, and once in a while we meet up to exchange CD-Rs, often being themed. Essentially I'm asking you lot to see if you can help me compile what would be a definite 3 CD collection of Detroit Techno. So, 3 CDs of 75 minutes. What goes on there?

Right. It's a rave. You're much more likely to see Derrick May at a rave than at a small club with a mature audience. I haven't seen him in a setting like that since '97. (313) Stacey Pullen mix
There's a 90-minute chunk of the end of Stacey Pullen's set recorded at the Arches in Glasgow last October now up here: http://www.traxxevents.com/music Realaudio only I'm afraid... There's also my warm-up set (and archives from a few other Glasgow parties). What's missing is Stacey's first couple of hours, but they may appear over the next week or so... Cheers, Tom

he did this last summer: http://www.cooljunkieny.com/clubs/dlg/dmay_review.html I didn't go because the tickets were expensive and it seemed kinda cheesy - but hey, who knows... maybe it was cool. did anyone go see him there? lisa matt kane's brain wrote: At 12:04 PM 1/12/2004, Javier Drada wrote: I thought Derrick May did not play at Rave's??? Luke Slater's 7th Plain stuff on GPR is my favourite of his, along with some of the Planetary Assault Systems (Booster!) and Morganistic stuff. It's a shame how he's gone from being so good to so unlistenable, he's really lost it badly I reckon... Cheers, Tom
