RE: (313) the climax
Ryan Burns: is the recent repress of the climax remastered??? because all the mixes i have heard of the track sound awfull because he recorded it on a cassete tape. Was the sound quality on the original really so 'bad'? In terms of dynamics, I doubt there is any real lack compared to the average pressing. Any imperfections in 'cleanliness' seem aesthetic to me rather than a matter of quality control - which has been a theme for Detroit 'popular' music for about 40 years! It's necessarily a matter of taste though, of course. k

Was the sound quality on the original really so 'bad'? To be honest, it never struck me as being particularly bad at all. I've used it on a lot of mixes and played it out several times, and it always manages to hold its own. As Ken says, I think it's an aesthetic thing - all the Basic Channel records were mastered onto cassette (IIRC) and that sort of fuzziness to the mastering is an essential component of their whole sound. RE: (313) Plea from a digest reader ...
also Re. New Mills, S/N etc. SImon You posted about people including original messages etc. with replies (asking them not to). I (and others) have also put in requests about this. You then go on to ask: Does that sound like a reasonable request, or should I just give up on trying to read the digests and subscribe to the normal list ? Dunno if you were joking or not but honestly, based on my experience, I advise you to do it. I made this switch and it is now so much easier to quickly scan to see if a post's of interest or not. It helps if you're in a position to set your e-mail package up (I used Rules Wizard in Outlook, don't know about other packages) to redirect 313 stuff to a special folder where it sits not clogging up your regular Inbox - a bit like the digest! I got back to work today after Easter to be faced with a rather large number of mails - mostly about colour [we can spell it that way if we want because it's our language ;-) ] - which I soon made short work of! Incidentally this also fixes the mails that come out as undecipherable code in the digest (which I guess means it's something to do with the way the digest is compiled which scrambles them). Finally, re. Sean Deason's mail, I thought it amusing (not really) that the minutiae of discussion regarding one artist's views and peoples views of his views leaves us without the contributions of another who I have records by. Peace to all It is my intention to offend no one Francis

RE: (313) Putting a Price on good music
I only heard the clip on the Peacefrog site, but I didn't like it at all. The tinkly sounds on it were really irritating and the strings were a bit cheesy and obvious. Usually, I'm a big fan of Kenny's records too. I was tempted to buy one anyway to stick on e-bay, but decided it wasn't fair to people who really want it. -Original Message- From: placid [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 13 April 2004 15:51 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Putting a Price on good music Will probably raise some controversy but the new Kenny larkin on Peacefrog is worth every penny of the 14.99 I paid Jus listening to it now... RE: (313) Putting a Price on good music
I just got mine in the mail, £19.10 for US orders (that's about $35.00) - but I'm not sorry one bit (I got #119 out of 400) and I have to say that when I listened to the sample I wasn't impressed either but I went ahead and ordered because I had faith (and a bit of wedge to spend). Turns out the full track is beautiful. One of those cases where a needle drop doesn't do the full tune justice. It's really gorgeous future techno for the twilight hours. Can't wait for the full length and yep - it's only one side MEK Sean Creen [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: placid [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org ave.com cc: Subject: RE: (313) Putting a Price on good music 04/13/04 09:54 AM I only heard the clip on the Peacefrog site, but I didn't like it at all. RE: (313) Putting a Price on good music
You see, as with the Hood and the Moodymann private pressings, the rationale would make sense to me if the tracks were clearly so much better than anything on the LP's which followed soon after. In my opinion, that was not the case. Not to say that these tracks aren't great. They are, but I really couldn't say that they outshone material on the subsequent LPs. (Again, imo.) So it becomes obvious that Peacefrog are exploiting not the fact of the extra-specialness of these PP releases but the willingness of some folks to buy releases which are at least partly more valuable because they're deliberately limited and because they're from some admittedly, legend-in-their-own-lifetime artists, to us anyway. And to show that I am just as susceptible to this evil tactic as the next 313 head, I did buy the Rob Hood track! It hurt to leave the KL one on Saturday - it was purely do to with some residual good-sense on my part! ... plus I'm gambling the shop I saw it at will still have copies by Thu - payday! k -Original Message- From: Martin Dust [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 13, 2004 4:58 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Putting a Price on good music Will probably raise some controversy but the new Kenny larkin on Peacefrog is worth every penny of the 14.99 I paid Is it only one track again?
