(313) Detroit Record Shops

2004-05-21 Thread Chris Anglesey

Hello 313'rs

I'm coming to the D next week and was wondering if any of you could be so
kind as to suggest some essential record shops that me and my friends should
visit whilst we're out there. Any info would be much appreciated (along with
addresses if possible).

Cheers,
Chris.

just make sure its open first.

the one time i tried to go it was locked up. and by then the subway was
shut down for the night. and the hostile i was staying in locked its doors
at midnight.

so i ended up at some awful trancey-techno joint watching shirtless french
folks do dance aerobics at about 144bpm until 6am when everything opened
back up

Yes! Yes! Yes!

And did you see him play on one deck??

During his set, one of the decks went out and they had to install a new
one. When it was all said and done, it turned out that he sampled a
bit off somewhere and looped it using the pioneer mixer's sample/loop
function and worked the loop with the record!!! The equipment guy was
standing there with another deck and Dave told the guy to hold on until
he was ready to make the switch. We were all standing there with our
jaws agape backstage. All this without a blemish in the mix,
unbeknownst to the audience. Frankly, I'm not a dj at all and most of
you on the list would say its no big deal but I've never seen
showmanship like that before and watching that scene unfold was HEAVEN.
Then I heard that there was a near riot from a couple of people.

I'm not surprised that Dave said that DEMF was one of his most amazing
gigs of his life because its most definitely one I won't forget.

Mmmm, Have you never been rude then? Don't take it to heart, he an artist
darling :) And you like what you like, I love his stuff, always on my
decks...

I interview who I wish really, big names, small names, a fish a frog - No
one gets special treatment, I treat everyone with the same respect and
honour - Mad Mike or Jerome Hill - same respect in my eyes and equally as
important as well...Just great people

(313) Kraftwerk Pics

Can anyone point me in the right direction for some good Kratwerk pictures?
(from the 2004 tour.)

There was a link posted on here which had some excellent pictures from
Dublin (www.lib-lab.com) , but it looks like they're no longer there.

(313) Throbbin gristle remixes

2004-05-21 Thread Jari Tolkkinen

Hi.

Haven't seen this discussed here before so here goes.

I love the remix album titled Mutant throbbing gristle. Throbbing gristle
remixed by Carl Craig, Simon Ratcliffe (basement jaxx), two lone swordmen
among others.

Two lone swordmen deliver a nice straight techno remixes of "United"
(instrumental & vocal while C. Craig works on his magic on "Hot on the
heels of love". Pretty "usual" (if you can say that) C. Craig mix in my
opinion.

The track that really stands out (for me atleast) is the Simon's remix of
"Hot on the heels of love". Boom, what an ace job he has done with the
original! 10/10 for this remix :)

Cheers,

Yeah it going to be interesting because as Dave points out, he's never
accepted that he's been a massive influence and doesn't see any of his

(313) Free the Elephants!

2004-05-21 Thread Jason Brunton

"Detroit Zoo to Free Elephants on Ethical Grounds
By Michael Ellis

DETROIT (Reuters) - The Detroit Zoo will become the first major zoo to
stop exhibiting elephants on ethical grounds because they can develop
arthritis and stress-related ailments in captivity, officials said on
Thursday.

The Detroit Zoo has one of the largest facilities in the country, but
its Asian elephants Winky and Wanda still have recurring foot problems
due to the cold weather, Director Ron Kagen told Reuters"

Maybe we'll see Winky and Wanda at the festival this year!!

ahh ok, makes sense really..

I hope it is a success ( I am sure it will be) as I feel the public would
benefit from these discussions. It certainly helped me understand Detroit today
(last year) and the past/future.

Good luck this time John and the TT crew, you can tell me all about it when I
see you at the festival :)

No Ian, this year's edition is quite different from last year's. Last
year
it was a rather big public event. This year is a rather intimate private
event.

The location has a limited capacity and that there is a free dinner. You
have got to realize that you can't do that for several hundreds of
people.
Sometimes you've got to work with what you have and make the best out
of it.
The original idea was a meet&mingle + dinner. I added the idea of the
roundtable to that because I believe it's an interesting an valuable
thing
to do. If all goes well we should be able to record the panel
discussion. In
that case I will write everything out and have it made available on the
website.

Techno Brings People Together is going to be a yearly event. If all
goes as
planned next year's edition should be public again.

Cheers!

John

Damn. Looks good! Last years was excellent. Really enjoyed the parts
from
Felton Howard and especially that dude from Detroit public radio,
giving the
history of US radio. That guy was really educational.

DAN BELL + CABANNE @ transit

DAN BELL (7th city)
 CABANNE (7th city)

material brings forth detroit's dan bell (now a berliner) to dj, along
with french artists cabanne on dan's 7th city imprint. this should be a
great minimal house prelude to the green light go pre-party the
following night at detroit's movement festival!
