I have had little-to-no interest in video games since Street
Fighter II, but
this one seems to be really establishing a new territory.
Everyone seems to
have something extraordinary to say about it.

its an unbelieveable game and ive only played it for a little
while so far. it combines early 90s hood movies with an RPG and
action game. the radio stations and cameos (samuel l
jackson?!?!?!!) are of the highest quality. its just an amazing
amazing game.

I wonder, are all of us
thinking-about-going-digital DJs way behind the curve for the
entertainemnt
audience? I wonder for how much longer I can get away with simply
spinning
records (not to say that curiosity and fait-tempting doesn't make
me want to
persue that end even further)?

in the other recent GTA games they have incorporated deejays
playing dub, electro, and drum and bass amongst others, and i know
there are alot of video games that have solicited tracks from
electronic music artists. i dont think even something as high tech
as video games are are even close to leaving deejaying behind.

Evenin' all

Just a quick heads up to let you know that the BLEEP 43 collective
will be represented on the show tomorrow (Friday) night by PLANT 43,
who will be performing a live set including some brand new material.
There'll also be a sneak preview of some of the tracks on the
forthcoming BLEEP 43 compilation. What's more, we'll be joined in the
studio by a special mystery guest! Can't say fairer than that.

If you fancy tuning in, the show goes out between 1am 4am BST on
Friday night.

You can listen on the radio on 107.9FM if you're in the Oxford area.
For those further afield you can catch the live stream at
http://www.passion1079.com

If you do tune in, say hello - there's an email form on the website,
or you can drop me a line on this email.

Oh well, story of my life.

Yeah, according to discogs it ain't so at any rate, and I'd actually be
pretty surprised if it were.

While this *is* surprising, I can't say I'm that shocked. The Ibadan DJ

the Azuli Jeff Mills comp is receiving payback?

(313) New Records

2004-10-29 Thread robin
just got some new bits. scuse rubbish reviews, my enthusiasm is better
than my powers of description :)

aardvarck carl craig edit on rushhour. really mad filtered chopped up
edit tho i can't tell the difference between that and the great
original at the minute apart from the ace downtempo twist at the end.
totally killer.

dj bone - longevity - vol 1 and 2...on 1, knowhere, a shuffling techno
tune with tht pipe-like sound and a female vocal sample over the top,
classic sounding techno. other side tribally techno track that just
builds and builds until the first breakdown. epic as you like. on vol2
ahnne smiled, nicely minimal track sounds ace pitched down. all tracks
in the classic 313 style, if that makes any sense. both on clear 10
inch vinyl...good touch.

chateau flight - les antipodes - joakim rmx. joakim up to his usual
tricks, liaisons sample at the start that fades into building synths,
then breaks and the liaisons sample back in again...all the usual
joakim emotional feel. brill.

morgan geists unclassics cd...err get it you won't be disappointed :)

dynarec on nature, 6 (ish) tracks of crisp uptempo electro. standout
for me at the mo is the pulsating distant signal more midtempo than the
others. right up my street.

sterac electronics-atlantis- interpersonal xp. nearly didn't pick this
up, the track for me is clown, electro as it should be, just the right
amount of sheen to it. atlantis is a great kinda beatless thing, great
mixed with beats. must track down the last twelve on this label.

vince -superworld - art of disco. dj. t mixes like a beefed up metro
area, vocal mix is the one for me at the mo

robin...

(313) OT A sad day and a word of warning

2004-10-29 Thread Martin Dust
Yesterday should have been such a good day, apart from it raining (when
doesn't it in Sheffield), I'd arrange to go meet some old clubbing
mates to play them some of the stuff coming on the label. I haven't
been out local for a long time so I was looking forward to catching up
with everyone. A bit of chat and the CD went in, then came the bomb
shell. Where's Sarah and Kay ? I asked...Silence and then the hard
news that after a night out Sarah had put Kay to bed last week and in
the morning she found her dead and is now on a manslaughter charge
because she purchased the stuff.

Although my head is a proper mess, I guess what I'm trying to say is be
careful and take care, this is a horrible mess...

But guess what? The majors aren't sleeping on this, I saw a news article
the other day with some pop chick who's new single is being incorporated
into a game and released simultaneously with it. Talk from an exec of
synergy and saying the releasing the song in the game was as valid as the
single release and they'd be pushing in this department in future. So make
the most of good sounds who's inclusion into games is on merit alone as it
looks like record company bucks are coming along to make sure that in future
the same insipid nonsense will be coming out of your console as out of your
radio.

Just had an idea! People could start putting tracklists in the file titles,
something like this:

Jeff%20Mills%20At%20Super%20Conductor%20-%201.%20Jeff%20Mills%20-%20The%20Bells%202.%20Claude%20Young%20-%
20Angelic.mp3

I think Windows now supports 1024 character file names, so it could work (I
think - haven't actually counted), and you'd have the added
benefit of getting the tracklist to scroll in the media player. Dunno if search
bots would be able to pick out anything sensical from a huge file
name like that.

A thought, at any rate...

If I mayI would suggest NOT missing the good
people of foundsound. If it weren't for this label
Philly wouldn't get aLOT of the worthy-to-see talent
that it does. ie.algorithm,Sammy D, Matthew Dear, etc.

Sean is also part of a label called Tuning Spork and
Fuzzybox, both putting out quality releases, esp. when
that sort of productions on the east coast are minimal
these days.

Kate goes wy back, and was important to the
Pittsburgh, Ohio and now Philly quality electronic
music scene. Her talent as a DJ (and now producer)
showcase this well. Cyhl...well Cyhl is always a
gentleman and a music genius (literaly-he goes to
Princeton Uni!). I shall miss him when he returns to
France.

kudos to Bryan for giving them an outlet in NYC.

RE: (313) BlackHeartDisco Reminder+party review from atl

2004-10-29 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
All I want to do with the night is create somewhere where people can come
together for an evening, listen to music and forget all the in the outside
world that divides us all

Now if we could get that to be a shared mission statement for all dance music
promoters we'd never whine about the scene again. I applaud you guys. Wish I
could go.

Oh yeah! That reminds me. Sorry I didn't post a notice about this (nobody in
atlanta anyways eh?). MJQ Deep (kai alce and cullen cole's sat night weekly)
had it's 7yr anniversary last sat. it was off the fxcking chain! Cullen got ill
early on with tons of bassy jazzy unidentifiable house. Omar from the uk was in
town and we had tons of family in the club, so they talked him into doing a
live pa. No band, just Omar and gear. That guy is as dope as they come and his
ability to adapt his voice to rhythms and textures is unmatched by any of his
contemporaries IMO. Kai came on after omar and let loose the disco sweat. Man,
I was lost for a good hour and a half, heads down, eyes closed, fist pumping. I
remember him going from some disco re-edit on cd (I only know cause he played
me it before he went to johannesburg) into brighter days into some acidy
thing that just wolloped me back into cosmic conciousness. After that I broke
for water and went in for another session. The next !
thing I remember is Pops (door guy there for 4?...5? Years) telling me to stop
dancing so they could sweep up. I'll talk to Kai today and try to get a few of
the other tunes he dropped for y'all. The afterparty got raided as did the
secondary afterparty. So yay for nitelife cops. Was a blast of a night though.
One of those nights when the party is packed, the dj knows the course, 85%of
the people there you've known for years (from that party) and we're all ready
to go to space, together. Man you know when you get the capoeira boys to close
their circle and just start boogying down, it's fxckin' ON! Magical.

(313) (UK) end of analogue radio?

2004-10-29 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
I just was reading this article on John Peel
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3284-1334478,00.html

 and came across this
___

The Culture Secretary is considering switching off analogue radio. Driven
by the same fiscal imperatives that have persuaded it to promote gambling,
the Government wants to convert Britain to exclusively digital listening

This should not be perceived, as manufacturers of radio sets want it to be,
as a laudable commitment to modernity. Nor should the excellent sound
quality and enhanced range of stations made available by digital audio
broadcasting persuade us that the future of radio must be entirely digital.

As long wave survived the arrival of medium wave and medium wave lived
through the birth of FM, analogue radio must continue alongside digital. If
it does not, 150 million analogue sets will be rendered useless. The cheap
technology that allows us to have a separate set in each room and to avoid
retuning by keeping a dedicated receiver for each of our favourite channels
will be made obsolete.

Digital radios will become less costly, but they will never be as cheap as
basic trannies. Digital sets are too complex and expensive for traditional
early adopters. There will not be digital radios in every room. It will be
reduced to the ?appointment to view? status that renders television less
popular than radio.

Switching off analogue radio would be like murdering a friend. The average
of 22 hours listening a week by British adults would fall and advertising
revenues with it. Let digital radio thrive, Secretary of State, but not by
assassinating analogue. That will deprive us of new John Peels and provoke
fury throughout the land

ive heard NYC soulful house deejays play windchime, and ive seen
plenty of UR records on their playlists in general. theyve always
played that older transmat stuff, but they seem to get off on the
UR stuff of today. and if you missed it, there was an excellent
10 on ibadan called sandcastles that sounds straight outta
detroit, almost like a UR cut actually with the jaguar-esque
string build-up. and right after that one there was another 10 by
slam mode that sounds very detroity as well, though not as good.
