Yeah, agreed, I think the Randolph joint is hot--especially the "Quote Me On That" track. The interview stuff is OK but gets old after awhile. I hope KDJ puts these tracks out on vinyl and adds some length soon. Just saw that DJ Genesis has a new record ready to pop--with mixes by Amp Fiddler and Dez. Going to see Roy Ayers tonight. Anyone caught his recent shows? I've always like his act, but sometimes he can ramble on a bit. Scott -Original Message- From: Thomas D. >p.s. Francis, you're slack, where's your report? ; ) I just didn't want to wind you lot up by saying "yeah he was OK - good but nothing really special"! One thing that strikes me reading Tristan's report from London is that it sounds like he played pretty much the same set, can't be too critical of this as obviously you can only take so many records with you when you cross the Atlantic, however if someone's going to play something like "The Wall" (which didn't do it for me personally) you like to feel there's a bit of spontaneity there - as with >Then he played the White Stripes and said, "This guy wants some Detroit sh*t, here's some Detroit sh*t!" (London) in Manchester it was "somebody asked me for some Detroit sh*t" followed by the White Stripes but don't get me wrong, I'm not down on the gig, it was fun and people were having a good time.
Re: (313) Recent detroit house
I wasn't really that into the Paul Randolph album much- there's also a couple of new Theo mix CDs out and the new Chateu Flight 12 is nice too- they have an album as well- it's all over the place style wise but incredibly well produced. New Pyschostsia release is pretty incredible too- Juju and Jordash- they quote Sonny Rollins as a major influence and it really shows- def one of the best couplings between House and Jazz I've heard before- unique. The funniest part was when he got on the mic and said, "this guy asked me to play some Detroit sh*t, I been playing three Parliament jams in a row. It doesn't get any more Detroit than this". Then he played the White Stripes immediately after and said, "This guy wants some Detroit sh*t, here's some Detroit sh*t! When these white boys played in Detroit there was 80% niggaz up in that joint", or something to that effect. I didn't catch any of his own stuff at Plastic People - just a track from the forthcoming Pirahnahead album, which was very nice. I haven't been sold on most of that stuff so far (just the remix of Diviniti), but this was excellent. Oh, and another funny moment was when he said, "this is some hot sh*t from my boy L.A. Williams" (and it was). He then pulled the needle off the record, got on the mic and said, "when I first heard my boy L.A. Williams played this I told him he had to give me that record. I told him I was gonna play it in London, and he bet me $100 I wouldn't pull the needle off the record and say what record it was. So he owe me a $100 now. You're all witnesses" (thought I should relay that one on just in case anyone's listening). ;) As Alex says, forgive the liberal use of quotation marks please. Re: (313) KDJ: Behind the sheet
Hey hey List. Been sick lately, so been away from the computer. Moodymann passed through Manchester last Friday, his first time. He f**king killed it. Good good party, all provided by www.eyesdown.net The party was at the Roadhouse, which is a little gig venue in Manchester. It's good for a proper party though, low ceiling, basement gaff - not too big or small, just right for about 250 people. Very dark, bar at the entrance on one side, big dancefloor. Tickets for this sold out in about three hours flat, so everyone got on it early doors. The queue filtered in to him dropping mid tempo boogie (he played the whole night 11 - '3'), some fairly non descript stuff, from behind a screen at the front of the stage with some projection business going on... So, it filled up pretty quick, and he got on the mic, bigging it up, telling us to drink more beer and going on about the football and that... I was steaming by this point, but did my best to sink a couple more just for him... Anyway, the dancefloor fills, and everyone's getting down, bumping together cos it's packed and the mic crackles into action at about 11.45: "Yo yo yo yo, Ok, I'm gonna play you a record I first heard played by Mojo in Detroit back in '82. We was driving along and had to stop the car for this s**t" The opening bars of Cybotrons "Alleys Of Your Mind" bust through the speakers. I lose my mind and I don't think I stopped dancing till whatever time the party finished. Next up, Telex "Moscow Disco", which a) I wasn't expecting, and b) sounded god through the extra speakers added for the party. After that, I don't remember alot, but he played Syl Johnson "Is it Because I'm Black", some disco version of "I Shot The Sherrif" that I didn't know Some great boogie, Pink Floyd "The Wall", White Stripes, some house records (the new still music), I also vaguely remember him getting on the mic saying he was playing some new stuff he'd been working on. I remember it being good, pretty leftfield, more techno, but I don't remember how it actually sounded. Kelvin told me he gave Shake a big shout "OK, I'm gonna play a record by my good friend Anthony Shake Shakir from Detroit" and everyone went mad It was a great party, that much I remember So, er, the screen got pulled down about 2, and there he was, sat playing records. Supposedly he was throwing cd's into the crowd. My mate said he gave away half his record bag too. I don't know what I was doing at this point, wouldn't have minded a cd. He didn't seem to mind the screen got torn down either, everyone was going bonkers anyway. Dunno what time it finished, good party. Hope he comes back. I think he enjoyed it. BIG SHOUT to Kelvin, Jon & Jack, big shout to Kenny Dixon Jnr, a good party host. Seems like a gentleman too. Alex p.s. Francis, you're slack, where's your report? ; ) p.p.s. and you Tim for that matter p.p.p.s and Danny if you're still here p.p.p.p.s some of those 'moody van' (stolen ford transit) quotes might be wrong, I was drunk.
