Saturn is a source of intense radio emissions, which have been
monitored by the Cassini spacecraft. The radio waves are closely
related to the auroras near the poles of the planet. These auroras are
similar to Earth's northern and southern lights. This is an audio file
of radio emissions from Saturn.

I see space, looking down on us, the future is growing near . . .

(313) vagueterrain.net

2005-07-27 Thread Neil Wiernik

For anybody that was attending TO or Montreal techno jams around 2000-2003
they may remember that Greg Smith (aka ether.mann) and Neil Wiernik (aka
naw) did a series of events under the name clonk. Now that we are both
back in TO again we've decided to revive the project out of stasis and
mutated clonk into not only an event promotion entity, but a new online
digital arts journal vagueterrain.net

Vague terrain will be a quarterly web-journal showcasing work from various
Canadian and International artists, musicians, and writers. Our intent is
to stake a unique claim which will sample the focus and methodologies of
academic and art journals while commissioning parallel excursions into the
sonic realm. Content will consist of a mixture of visual art, audio, and
text curated by Neil-Wiernik and Greg Smith. On occasion guest curators
will be invited to select content for vague terrain.

The first version of vagueterrain.net will be launched in the fall of
2005. As a homage to our origins as one of the first Canadian promotional
outfits pushing
glitch
techno our first issue will be dedicated to an exploration of digital
detritus. The digital refuse and artifacts we find ourselves immersed in
at the dawn of this new century will serve as both the content and the
means of production for a handful of invited artists. Anticipated themes
include feedback, decay, (mis)translation, and fragmentation.

We will also be promoting a few small events in the coming months in TO go
to link for more info about that. www.vagueterrain.net

For anybody that wasn't around TO or Montreal when we were promoting as
clonk:

Over the course of 2000-2003 clonk hosted events in Toronto and Montreal
promoting a diverse range of artists including Akufen, Crackhaus,
Deadbeat, Jeff Milligan, Monolake, Kero, Kit Clayton, Rechenzenstrum,
Scion Tikiman, Sutekh, and Tomas Jirku as well as countless other
significant Canadian producers DJ's.

There used to be somewhat of a controversy when certain DJs would only play
the extended intro and break but not the vocal...there were some who said
the vocal made it too commercial while others claimed you were frontin' if
you didn't play the vocal.

On the too commercial front, was anyone at the party where Herr Hawtin
dropped Cuban Pete as song by Jim Carrey of The Mask soundtrack?

http://www.discogs.com/release/211556

That song's smokin'! ;-)

(313) Deadbeat, Wolf+Lamb, Broken Window, Sean Smith in NYC Friday

2005-07-27 Thread Bryan Kasenic
Friday July 29

***THE BUNKER***

Ableton Live 5 NYC Release Party

Deadbeat (~scape | Montreal)
DJ Brokenwindow (Community Library, Tigerbeat6 | Portland)
Wolf + Lamb (NYC)
Sean Smith (Socks and Sandals | NYC)

All 3 Deadbeat full lengths on ~scape have been spun many times
in the early evening at the Bunker, and they usually bring the
trainspotters running up to find out what the hell it is. Scott
Monteith (aka Deadbeat) makes impossibly deep digital dub that
somehow avoids all of the dub cliches and puts a fresh spin on
the decades-old genre. As amazing as the albums are, you really
have to see the live set to fully appreciate the sound. He had
heads spinning and hips shaking at his last subTonic gig. His new
album has a subversive poltical edge (something that is sadly
absent in most electronic music), and we deeply respect that at
the Bunker.
http://scape-music.de/

DJ Broken Window is a very talented DJ from Portland. He has two
Parallel Universe releases on the Tigerbeat6 offshoot Violent
Turd. He could be dismissed as just another tired mash-up artist,
but that's really overlooking the genius of these CDs. All of his
mixes are done live with vinyl, and match up two songs perfectly
from start to finsh. He even includes instructions on how each
track was created in the liner notes. The results are incredible.
His mash-ups include hilarious unlikey pairings like Underground
Resistance and Walter Carlos, The Mills Brothers with Pantytec,
Simple Minds with Naughty by Nature, and many more tracks
showcasing what must be a very massive record collection. Tonight
he is throwing down a DJ set and doing some live electronic
drumming.
http://www.jyrk.com/djbrokenwindow/index.html

Wolf + Lamb are gaining much noteriety in the NYC scene by
throwing insane afterhours parties for the Bunker that go until
Saturday afternoon. They are also great DJs who utilize Ableton
Live software to weave gorgeous sets of warm bath techno, fukt up
ambient, and heroin house. See their website for some nice
downloads.
http://wolflambmusic.com/

Sean Smith is one half of the infamous Socks and Sandals duo, who
have rocked the Bunker many times. We caught his new solo set at
the ImageNode benefit and it was completely out of control. Deep
dark crunchy minimal techno aimed squarely at the dancefloor.
