(313) The Island

Has anyone seen this sci-fi movie? I know it was shot in Detroit and from
the promo clips I've seen Detroit features quite prominently (albeit no
Belle Isle)? Is it any good? ;)

My wife and I went because there wasn't much out and we wanted to see a
movie she hadn't seen - I rarely get to go to movies, so what the hey.
The acting was decent (Obi Wan, Boromir and Steve Buscemi!), and it had
an interesting premise. Can't recall, but I think it's a Michael Bay
film. Lots of action sequences. What I found fun was the way the action
sequences were shot (nice cinematography). The best way I can describe
it is that instead of focusing the flight of the cars in the air in the
obligatory 'cars flying through the air' scenes - which are ubiquitous
in action films these days - there was a lot of up-in-it focus on the
crash down in that sort of you are there in the middle of it crazed
confusion/movement which reminded me of Ridley Scott's battle scenes in
Gladiator.
The problem in most films of this ilk is that it's easy to tell who the
expendables are pretty quickly and also how things are going to turn out.
I wouldn't beat a path to the theater for it, but I wasn't angry I'd
seen it or anything. I'd say it will fare better on the big screen than
it does as a rental.
It all depends on if you like futuristic action films, I guess. Not a
bad ride, all said.

I was sceptical . but really enjoyed the film.

Might have to revisit it, now that I know it was filmed in Detroit.

I thought it was based very closely on George Lucas first film THX-1138
.. with some modern evolution of the concept.

But yea, totally surprised by the film, after expecting it to be
another sci-fi wet biscuit .. all flash and no pants.

Compared to alot of recent sci-fi attempts I felt the island was
quite strong, telling a decent story in a managable fashion.

I think it could stand the test of several viewings.

you just can't do three sounds exactly the same

a low string, a high string and bass sound
all with the same reverb!
all in the same time schedule

thats crazy talk. i mean, there's dudes who get paid by hiphop
artists to recreate instrumental loops minus vocals or annoying
parts that they dont want. and they make them almost EXACTLY the
same. and theyre using a computer and a rack of synths and other
instruments to remake an entire live band. recreating that kind of
stuff is difficult as hell, you have to know how different kinds
of micing and amps and sh*t is going to sound and how to effect it
to make it sound right. and youre trying to say that a couple
people using probably very similar if not the exact same
electronic gear can't make three synth sounds that are the same?
you must be smoking it. sh*t, i hear enough techno and house that
sounds exactly the same without trying on the regular.

even more retarded is the fact that anyone cares. hello? who cares
if someone jacked a loop from a techno track. seriously. i know
lots of people on here play lots of hard techno tracks that
sampled jeff mills' classics.

Haven't seen it yet but they were filming in Detroit last winter (2004-05)
for a couple of weeks. I thought it was to be released in 06 but I guess
they had most of it done by the time they came here. I think they did a
scene in the old train station judging from the previews, so I'm excited to
see that--it's been tightly barricaded for a couple of years now.

im just pointing out that it has been an accepted practice in
techno music to sample even other techno records for many years
now. im not making any judgements on the quality of music that
this practice has made, lord knows my opinion of it probably
wouldnt be very high.

criticising people for sampling is very similar to the kinds of
thinking that criticise people for using drum machines or other
not real instruments. the lines here are not very clear and most

I really enjoyed the film as well, though it was somewhat predictable.

What I enjoyed most was the cinematography and that Detroit was so
recognizable, even with the CGI enhancements to make it look futuristic. It
was Detroit, but in the movie it was supposed to be LA. Har!

That's why I love playing Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition too. They did a great
job translating the streets of Detroit to a game and you can't go wrong when
you're racing with UR as your driving music!

They were supposed to eliminate Sydney from The Matrix too but in that scene
where time freezes, I know that spot - I have been in that Dymocks book
store which they didn't disguise. It's obviously Sydney.

I really enjoyed the film as well, though it was somewhat predictable.

What I enjoyed most was the cinematography and that Detroit was so
recognizable, even with the CGI enhancements to make it look futuristic. It
was Detroit, but in the movie it was supposed to be LA. Har!

(313) New Oasis EP

2005-08-16 Thread Big 50 Entertainment
Hi,
We have a limited amount of the forthcoming Oasis EP titled Track #14.
http://emporium50.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=EP-OAS
-14Category_Code=FXHE

We also have the latest Sound Signature releases by Theo Parrish and Howard
Thomas.
http://www.emporium50.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGYStore_Code=E5C
ategory_Code=SS-EP

In the next day we will have a preview of the Oasis Collaborating LP which
has unreleased tracks not on the CD.

On a sad note it appears the end of house music on daytime Detroit has come.
Former Detroit Public School radio station 90.9 WDTR and then WRCJ has
officially switched to a Classical and Jazz format. WDTR was the only
station supporting house music during the day playing local artist's tracks
and mixes. Magic Mike Young's show Stick it in Your Ear was the only
dedicated to the support of local house and techno (not only electronic
music as WDET). He often had guests on the show like Kevin Saunderson, Scan
7, Shake, Aux 88, Mike Grant, and Strand,

Thanks for your support of our shop and Detroit house music.

(313) Detroit is Liberal (OT)

2005-08-16 Thread diana potts

After debating a move out West, I nearly fell off my
chair when I read this

Detroit found to be most liberal U.S. city
Source: Science Daily

California based organization ranked Detroit as most
liberal city amongst 237 US Cities. The Bay Area
Center for Voting Research conducted the survey in
cities of population more than 100,000 and used voting
patterns to identify various criteria.
