Yes Ken, it's true, that incident where Dan got called out
for talking like a Limey. This is an occupational hazard when
you're working for Auntie :)

We're you totally upfront and honest about 'the incident' though Dan?

You see, these things get you a reputation you know...

I found Paxahau's approach to the press extremely frustrating, it was
like being back in kindergarten.

The press pass got you into the media room - that was it. As Kent said,
to talk to artists, I had to ask permission and have a Paxahau press
chaperone to escort me into the backstage area (and promptly out again).
The whole time I was regarded with utmost suspicion. I have no idea why
- as far as I'm aware I don't have a reputation for assaulting
artists/invading stages etc.

You wrote:
As long as I'm complaining -- what was up with banning press from the
free booze tent? Past festivals a press pass gave you all access. This
year, a press pass just got you inside the fence for photos, and you
had to schedule interviews with a Paxahau flack. Paxahau should know
that a well lubricated press is a happy press!

I'll post up a link to my photos when my editor gets done picking the
 ones he wants for Grooves.

It's RJ Valeo who made this. If you go to his website you can download
the ep in MP3 format. It's pretty good stuff.

Nice, dub-edged techno here. Not sure from which corner this emerged,
but I'm game for more. Supposedly this is from some 'mystery
producer'...
It has a basic sound you'd expect from a certain channel - or I could
just be experiencing some kind of chain reaction.

(313) Mutek wrap up!

2006-06-08 Thread tevans1111
I somehow survived, but not without a raging head cold, mainly from air
conditioning. The 2nd piknik of mutek was not rained out and it was nice fun
in a beautiful park with water falls. Mark Houle dropped another great set,
better than his one at movement, but it is hard to be sure. Ricardo showed up
this time (last year's mutek he lost his passport and did not show) and hearing
him and Richie play together was quite nice. It was the best Richie set of all
3 that I heard that week, cause Ricardo kept some element of fun in the mix.
It wasn't just a surgical operation of laying down tracks and building things
up, heck it was a party with good party music. A lot of detroit stuff,
including good life carl craig rmx. They went at it for 5.5 hours. I kept
thinking they were winding things down and then it would start banging again.
I was really looking forward to hearing them together from what I have heard
online, and they did not dissappoiont and the crowd loved it to death
.
the last show was pretty interesting with Pole with band, as my personal
highlight. It kind of reminded me of what I would imagine Porter Ricks to be
like live.
The sound at mutek was loud but often murky, esp at their Darling Foundry main
event space. There were almost no mids, it kind of surprised me I thought that
Mutek would be all about the audiophile surround sound setup, where the only
ear damage would be done to those not wearing ear protection. But especially
at that last show, Pole sounded best outside the space on the sidewalk with
earplugs in.
I actually kind of think that going to 2 festivals in one week is a bit
excessive and probably bad for me in some real way. Why are things that are
bad for you always so good? Anyway, Mutek was cool because there were a lot of
people that do events there, promoters from all over ther US and CA, so it was
cool to meet people and network and still have a good time dancing. It was
intimate, without being too small, and there were no ravers there so that is a
big plus. But alas, no good swag to brag about.

I am picking up this thread from about 13 months ago...

So I finally get to add to this b/c I'm a new, first time dad, as of almost
a month ago. As you either know, or can imagine, there's tons of writing and
products out there that play on the idea of Classical music being good and
calming for baby. I personally think it's a load of hooey and a marketing
technique they use b/c in the real world, people associate classical music
with intelligence and culture.

Someone gave us a baby Einstein CD (a series of toys, music, and video for
infants), and it was crap - 40 minutes of classic lullabies played on a
general MIDI preset box.

My theory goes like this: when baby is in utero, he/she is swimming in
fluid. All of the outside sounds get translated to swirling bass, and it's
LOUD in there; think about what it sounds like when you're under water. I
was looking for the best music to mimic that environment

To that end, the thing that just astounds me is that my son loves and is
calmed by dubby techno (lucky for me!). When he starts to cry, I play rhythm
sound, maurizio, or deepchord over and over. More up tempo Gez Varley,
Ifach label, or Rob Hood tracks work too.

The trick is turning it up, not to any ludicrous level, but loud enough to
feel the bass kick. Cutting back on the highs helps too.

Hopefully, his taste in music will continue along this path :)

Wow, that sounds most cool and gives some hope! :) You already tested if
that works with Reggae and Dub tunes as well? Since Rhythm Sound seems to
go down nicely. A lot of bass around in Dub!

Cheers and groovy times with your son!

RE: (313) techno and kids

2006-06-08 Thread Kelly B. Delaney
'Tis true! Our son used to fall asleep to that stuff all the time, and
particularly liked Brian Eno and Carl Craig. He's four and a half now, and
is a big fan of Kraftwerk, Theo Parrish, and the soundtrack from Rockers,
though his favorites are Jacob Miller and Kiddus I.
At some point, people are wired into thinking that 4-minute pop songs are
the only acceptable form of music. Our kids are never fed that bull, and as
such, it isn't as big a challenge for them to appreciate techno and the
like. I'm curious to see what other developmental insights will arise from
being fed a steady diet of good music from conception on.

More On The Artists
Peter Kersten , aka Lawrence/Sten is a firm favourite at the Süd
Headquarters . Having been the first promoters to have brought him to
england , last december having loved what he did , we thought this
would be another fitting occassion to invite him back .
Lawrence/Sten , has made waves and has attracted the attention of many
names within the music industry without too much fuss has certainly
not compromised on his music .
He is one of the most in demand remixers , having remixed for artists
such as Depeche Mode's ' Martin Gore , Superpitcher , Egoexpress , e.t.c
His music is regularly played by dj's such as Michael Mayer , Carsten
Jost , Sven Vath , Ricardo Villalobos , Luciano , Reinhard Voigt ,
Thomas Fehlman , Tobias Thomas e.t.c.
Wether making music under his Lawrence or Sten guise ,; the music is
always beautiful , classsic , haunting , deep and there is such amazing
attention to detail . Definitely stands out by a mile from the works of
many of his peers .
He has already released what could possibly be the ep , of 2006 , for me
. If you have not yet picked it up , make sure you do ! :) Absolute
Killer . ! It's titled Take Me To The Fridge . Out on his his own

Jacek Sienkiewicz was born in Warsaw in 1976 . He started producing
music in the 1990's . His 1st release ' titled , Recognition was in
1999 . Jacek started playing as a DJ in 1995, but soon realised that
full artistic expression is possible only through creation. From his
first 303 to today’s fully digital setup, Jacek gained both gear and
experiences. After two years of experimenting, Recognition Recordings
came to life
. With fast selling releases , and rave reviews from the music press and
artists alike , Trapez and De Bug magazine ' , Soon approached him to do

Jacek was approached by Sven Vath , to join the Coccoon dj roster as
