Re: (313) john aquaviva aquaholic CD
I saw him at Tastefest in ... 2002? He played before Carl Craig. Then we went to a reception at RealDetroit for Planet E, and then to Motor to see Acquaviva again. Oh, I was staying with Dennis Donahue, and somewhere in all that, we saw War, and a bit of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Acquaviva was kinda awesome but I have to give it up for War. And Joan Jett. Used to be I came to Detroit and sh!t happened ;-) On 11/6/06, scotto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: his x-mix is killer. best set i have seen him play was at the motor during the first demf. that set rocked. but mostly johns sets are so so. st the ten year anv. at st andrews he was playing pre mixed records and i kinda lost a little respect for him them. but he is a solid house dj, is fun to see, and does play (usually good tracks) scotto On Nov 6, 2006, at 6:18 PM, /0 wrote: I used to love acquavivas sets in detroit. he's weird though.. I got mine from J.T last night. It's great! -Original Message- From: Minto George [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 06 November 2006 23:47 To: Stoddard, Kamal Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) convextion album Awesome review Kamal! don't think a magazine review could have said it better. We didn't do a whole lot of promo just as we've not done in the past and we thank those for spreading the word on our chit and promoting it that way. We're all happy with the end result and Gerard thanks all for buying it and supporting the life of more of his music being released on his own VEXT imprint. minto Alright. I guess this is as good a time as any to say this. THE NEW CONVEXTION JOINT IS FACKING AMAZING! Okay, aside from the fact that it sounds like the basic channel template has been stuck in a hyper-evolutionary time folding chamber for like eons just becoming sentient and this popped out... ...yeah, aside from that, this is some of the most detailed, fluctuating, pulse-waving, freaky ish out there. I kept laughing as I put on track after track and thought to myself, guess dude doesn't like hi hats and snares? then only to realize a couple bowls later they were perfectly there, just phased to Pluto and buried dp in the mix. Which brings me to the keyword here. Dep. Not deep like, wow...man...that's deep... or the afro-house people deep. I mean deep as in literally. There are sounds buried so deep in the sonic layering that (for the first time in a long time)I feel like a real aquanaut again going exploring for sounds and watching them shift all together at times like a school of fish (alien pretty fish). There were a couple songs I didn't really stick with to the end...but I was still feeling them joints. I haven't even looked at the track titles so I can't give specifics on names yet. Just remember, it doesn't take much to get lost in there. Really lost. Not the show. Your mind... I also got the ERP joint I missed awhile back. OMFG! I really still can't describe this one. It's beautiful and growls at your face. The one thing I found disconcerting about both of these though was they were FAST. Like some of sheds's older stuff. Like at -8 it's just grooving. It doesn't detract from the songs at all just the mixability with some of my other stuff. Truth be told, I hope Mr. Vext never reads this as I'd hate to taint the process with thoughts of mixability. Oh yeah! and I got the custom hood-art on both sleeve pieces by senor sharkface JTizzletron which takes it from like collectible to heirloom status. One of the best vinyl purchases I've ever made. And as a nod to the kids reaction thread: My boys were all over the electro Saturday morning. They were into the hard fast stuff. Thrashing, throwing the couch pillows, and not even caring if I was looking. Just ballsout. Full on dancing with their mean faces(awesome). Then I went into some of the more straightup 4x4 dubby deep stuff and they started doing some weird ground dancing that almost went breakdancy but then they petered out and went for cinnamon toast. Next time I'm gonna get flix. Yall gone bug. (313) Strand on MySpace - Hear complete Intact sample
For those of you who like more than 30 seconds to sample a song, you can hear Strand's new single, Intact, in its entirety on our MySpace page. You'll also find future releases, classics and unreleased material there as well. We'd like to know what people think of the new stuff as it comes out, even if you hate it. We figured we had a captive audience in the 313 community. So far, with one exception, you've been pretty silent. Is it brilliant? Lackluster? Not funky enough for you? Beyond your comprehension? Speak up...you do on everything else : ) We know we've been away, but we're back and we mean business. Give the native sons some healthy 313 debate. http://www.myspace.com/strand313
Re: (313) Strand on MySpace - Hear complete Intact sample
I really dig the melodies and it's really well produced. Everything leaps out in the mix, nice sounds, etc. But 'Intact' is really linear. The beats don't change much worth speaking of and the melodic changes occur in chunks (8-bar intervals, etc). Personally I don't mind this style (most everything I made forever was like this and some of my favourite music has been arranged this way) and I like the way the track continues to evolve throughout, but I reckon it could be improved with more attention to the beats. I think you can get away with a chunky arrangement style like this but I think it will go over better if you combine it with some added variance in the beats. As is it's almost like you're putting so much pressure on the melodies to carry the song that you're asking a lot of the listener. I dig it as is, but I reckon you guys could make it that little bit better which would make me run out and buy it. Make sure to leave those melodies intact though. ;) Thanks for posting up the whole track. I think it really helps for this track in particular. Now that's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the comments. I, for one, have been pretty lazy when it comes to beats in the past, which I thought was odd because I'm a pretty good drummer. The drums don't change in Intact and I can see how that might be a sticking point for some people. It is for me in a lot of instances, especially in the music we're working on now. However, it doesn't bother me in this case because the rest of the song changes so much melodically. Intact, in general, is supposed to be reminiscent of an older style and feel. Kind of a minimal track with a classic Detroit stringiness to it. For those of you who are old enough to remember them, it's also supposed to have a 1950's/1960's bw, sci-fi movie/Twilight Zone/Outer Limits (the original) soundtrack vibe as well. Think of it existing in three acts (like most movies) or three musical movements. I'm not saying it couldn't have benefitted from some drum trickery. I considered spicing them up a bit but ultimately decided against it, as I felt it wasn't paramount, given everything else that was going on. I guess that's what remixes are for. I really was trying to showcase the melodic elements, especially at the end. That is a bona fide theme and I'm particularly proud of it. Expect more distinct, deliberate, memorable melodies from us as opposed to just tinkering on the high keys. You can also expect less linear arrangements (on some stuff). Peace. (313) a litle story (was Strand on MySpace - Hear complete Intact sample)
here in Porto Alegre a groups of friends make the party Fusion, that have 16 years old now. the party is one of the very few projects that work with detroit techno and deep house in Brasil. no need to say its completly underground. I can recall a party we made in 2002 (almost shure) in a classic club of the city. a few hours before the party a popular artist came from Sao Paulo and the club ower decided to put him in owr line up. he played hard eletronic music (I wont call that techno)with distorted eletric guitarrs. something similar with hard psy trance I would say. after his set (that got some people exited but most of the people confused), I left the dance floor with no music for about 10 seconds and puted the song STRAND - GEORGES to play, from the begining to the end, with no mixes, in pitch 0. it was sort of a purification of the dance floor. after that I begun a minimal techno sets as I was doing that time (M Plant and Search records mainly). it was a very weird party. hehe. georges is my favorite Strand track. Positive sounding, what can I say... Soul 223 - All City EP - Soul Jazz Steve Picton/Stasis here with the low tempo house business. Q is probably my fave track on here with it's melancholy. Manifest is closest to that KDJ looped vibe. Outlines - Listen to the Drums - Jazzanova Mix Again slow house this time in that Ame/Sonar Kollektiv vein (which I'm tiring of a little but it's ok slow). I liked the vocal on this but I'm not sure the whole track works that well. Worth a check though. Anyone else with owt worth reporting on? robin...
RE: (313) a litle story (was Strand on MySpace - Hear complete Intact sample)
Nice one. k -Original Message- From: henrique casanova [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2006 1:47 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) a litle story (was Strand on MySpace - Hear complete Intact sample) here in Porto Alegre a groups of friends make the party Fusion, that have 16 years old now. the party is one of the very few projects that work with detroit techno and deep house in Brasil. no need to say its completly underground. Well, there's always next time to blow your wig back. I'm just happy you had the moxy to be honest. It's all subjective and we may totally disagree with an opinion, but it's interesting to see how differently people will respond to the same stimulus. At least, I find it interesting. Maybe I shouldn't speak for Brian and Kech. Well I think it definitely works in that regard, and is reminiscent of the older style, when techno was so similar to house, and both had similar arrangements. A great example of this is TP's 'Your Love', which has the same beat unchanging throughout, and he even pushes out the repitition to 16 bar loops for most of the track, but it's such a hook that it carries you with it anyway. With that track I always wished there had been another version, because I've always thought it worked despite the arrangement, not because of it. That's pretty much how I feel about Intact too. Re: (313) Re: Strand on MySpace - Hear complete Intact sample
On further reflection, I think the older style of 4/8/16 bar chunks had a lot to do with the way hardware drum machines and sequencers were designed back then. Everything was in multiples of four and it was so easy to fall into a pattern (pun only slightly intended) of writing and arranging songs. Even today, software emulations of classic analog gear follow this same paradigm. Besides, I'm pretty sure human beings naturally synchronize to multiples of 4, especially for dance music. Waltzes, which are also dance music, are in 3/4 time (3 quarter notes per measure), but many of the most popular ones have a theme that repeats or changes after some multiple of 4. Modern software sequencers are less restrictive and don't scream 4x right out of the box. I think most songs that hearken back to the good ol' days of techno will have that chunky feel for authenticity, whether it's intentional or not. I see it as being the same as the 12 bar Blues. If you want that classic Blues feel, you stick to the 12 bar formula.
