No one around Iowa seems to have picked up on this track so I hadn't heard it until just now -- I'm sure everyone in Europe who goes out all the time is already sick of it. But combining the minor chord chug from 'The Bells' with a neoclassical melodic line and loads of cool noises, buzzy synths and subtle percussion makes this a winner for me. This btw is on the Francois K Frequencies CD. I normally don't buy mix cds, but I'm a big FK fan, down to collecting as many of his 80s dance remixes as I can find. Plenty of Detroit artists represented on this CD too. FK always walks a fine line in his track selection, too. At times you think he's verging on going Progressive or Trance (or Progressive Trance) on you. But I think what's really happening is that he has a weakness for lyrical melody and harmony, something that the execrable genres aforementioned have turned into a caricature and cheap emotional manipulation. And while, as I said, I don't normally buy Mix CDs I also recently grabbed Henrik Schwarz' DJ Kicks CD. I walked into a West Village music store and Get Around To It by Arthur Russell was playing, which was followed by a nice track I didn't know, and then Rhythm Sound Let Jah Love Come. I went up to the counter and demanded a copy not knowing what it was. The record store guy and I bonded over our love of AR (who, like me, is a 'cellist from Iowa). The record store guy claimed to remember AR wandering around the village with headphones on back in the day, which may or may not be true... but listening to Get Around To It in those same streets gave it a new meaning for me...
Re: (313) UR fans taking it to far
That really happened, and it wasn't the first time the guy offered to kill himself for UR. lol A lot of good that does for the music huh? Re: (313) UR fans taking it to far
When people are young, they look to music and the culture associated with the music to help define their identity. They meet people with similar tastes and make friends, they dress a certain way, etc etc. This has been cynically manipulated by marketers at times -- kids come under the spell of a certain band, and there's a store at the mall that can supply all their subculture needs. Like Evanescence? Go to Hot Topic! Like Dave Matthews? Go to Abercrombie and Fitch! UR is the polar opposite of that -- their message is Do not allow yourself to be programmed. Strangely enough, even a music and message that says 'think for yourself' can be twisted around in a kid's mind to something as ridiculous as what Mad Mike was writing about. Kids are kids, and they occasionally need reminding to chill the f*k out and get a life. OTOH who knows what was behind that kid's outburst. Was he serious, like that guy who killed himself on video for Bjork? Was he just talking crack? Who knows. But as anyone who knew Dave Shayman knows, when people talk about suicide, they may not just be playing for attention...
Re: (313) UR fans taking it to far / new UR's / r-a-d plug
I think the whole episode is totally bizarre, I don't understand why the incident is being made public as it seems like it has to be a pretty singular incident. Either the suicidal guy is a teenage fanatic, which i doubt UR have many of, or a lunatic who rants and raves on the subway. It doesn't make a lick of sense, but mike's response is pretty entertaining with all the UR double-entendre-ing speaking of UR, hey yo, how are those new 12?? new nomadico and dj skurge out this week, looking forward to checking... ps rub-a-dub finally have a website after years of threats and jokes, so the end must be near. the rapture is at hand! http://rubadub.co.uk perty!
