Hey, thanks for the elaboration, your thoughts come through much clearer now. Donating money to a university is a great idea, and i have to admit i checked minus website after i replied to you. it looks as if minus is filing a corporate social responsibility report, which is good. But the propaganda for digital downloading in there, well, that's quite practical for them, isn't it ? it's also true, but this kind of sense for joining the practical and trendy (actually nature preservation is necessary first , trendy second) gives them an edge. and from what i've noticed in the past Rich has shown to be a clever guy - marketing wise. hey, if this will make their music sound more natural as well, i'm all for it! peace D*/ On 9/4/07, /0 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I'm sure you're misunderstanding me, and perhaps thats my fault. > > I get annoyed as hell when a musician thinks that because they sold lots of > records and people like to listen to them mix other peoples music, that we > automatically care about what they say about climate change, politics, etc. > > it irritates me that minus is using my email to further their agendas, > regardless of what they may be. they know damn well that I didnt give them > my email addy for their hipocritical announcements regarding "climate > change" (notice this was "global warming" until recently) > > rich, you wanna help? dedicate a months worth of event fees to a university > that has educated people working on studies relating to climate change. > you're just an uneducated musician that flies all over the world, using jet > fuel, electricity etc to provide a recreational service. > > were this on minus.com, I would just ignore it. > > this is just my opinion, not looking to get into "climate change" debates > etc. > > > > - Original Message - > From: "Davor Ostojic" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <313@hyperreal.org> > Sent: Monday, September 03, 2007 7:31 PM > Subject: Re: (313) this MINUS climate change BS > > > > On 9/4/07, /0 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > >> did anyone else get this crap from minus, jumping on the "climate change" > >> bandwagon? > >> > >> someone needs to remind them that they dont really matter in the grand > >> scheme of things, and initiatives like this smack of over-inflated sense > >> of > >> self-importance. > >> > >> because Im sure playing 200 days a year on multi-thousand watt audio > >> systems > >> is environmentally friendly... > >> > >> sounds like richie ate too many pills this weekend > > > > well, when you donate money for an operation to a sick child's > > parents, i don't know how that over-inflates your sense of > > self-importance, but it surely shows you know what IS important. how > > does this Minus step endanger you ? you disagree with what Minus is > > doing ? > >

I'm sure you're misunderstanding me, and perhaps thats my fault. I get annoyed as hell when a musician thinks that because they sold lots of records and people like to listen to them mix other peoples music, that we automatically care about what they say about climate change, politics, etc. it irritates me that minus is using my email to further their agendas, regardless of what they may be. they know damn well that I didnt give them my email addy for their hipocritical announcements regarding "climate change" (notice this was "global warming" until recently) rich, you wanna help? dedicate a months worth of event fees to a university that has educated people working on studies relating to climate change. you're just an uneducated musician that flies all over the world, using jet fuel, electricity etc to provide a recreational service. were this on minus.com, I would just ignore it. this is just my opinion, not looking to get into "climate change" debates etc. - Original Message - From: "Davor Ostojic" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, September 03, 2007 7:31 PM Subject: Re: (313) this MINUS climate change BS On 9/4/07, /0 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: did anyone else get this crap from minus, jumping on the "climate change" bandwagon? someone needs to remind them that they dont really matter in the grand scheme of things, and initiatives like this smack of over-inflated sense of self-importance. because Im sure playing 200 days a year on multi-thousand watt audio systems is environmentally friendly... sounds like richie ate too many pills this weekend well, when you donate money for an operation to a sick child's parents, i don't know how that over-inflates your sense of self-importance, but it surely shows you know what IS important. how does this Minus step endanger you ? you disagree with what Minus is doing ?

Re: (313) vinyl prices (was Pricey multidisc sets)
i have to admit i get tired of hearing this "records don't make money" argument. it's not true. there are some people making money on records still. and there are some who still make LOADS of money on records. > So your cost of doing a 4x12 with a run of a 1000: $6000 or $7000. that's about right > You'll be lucky to get $12 wholesale for that, meaning that if you that's not. depending on your distribution partner or whatever way you are selling your records, you can get closer to $14-$16 for 4x12" (more if you are going the route of direct sales only for at least part of the run)...$12 would be rock bottom. those few dollars per unit matter a lot. > don't spend a DIME on promotion you'll net $5000 or $6000 on the run. i think a few more thou than that, which isn't too bad... but still, for a huge 4x12" project, that ain't much. > You have to pay the artists out of that. The only way an artist makes > real money out of a release is if a) it gets them gigs b) the track is > picked up for a high-profile dj mix or c) it's sold into the > advertising/soundtrack market. hahaha that depends on what you call real money...for an artist, all money is real money..and the real point #a) if it SELLS. if an album sells 2000 copies on vinyl and cd it is a nice chunk of change - more than half of the average teacher's salary anyways :P > Long story short: making records is a way to spend money, not make money. unless it sells...! > If the records are expensive at the retail level, beyond, say $8 per > disc, either the retailer or the wholesaler (or both) is raising the > price in response to demand. or the label priced the records that way to begin with to cover costs. we had to set the wholesale cost of the convextion 2x12" at 8euros each to cover all the international shipping, initial short pressing run, full color artwork, defects, and most of all, to pay gerard what he deserves. that means our distributor had to add a certain percentage on top, and then the retailer adds another percentage on top of that. it's all percentages, which means that a small increase at the wholesale level becomes a larger increase as it passes through each stage of distribution. at 8euros wholesale, there was no possibility the convextion 2x12"s could be any less than 17 or 18 euro retail, which is well more than 8$ per disc, without having anything to do with demand...

Some back of the envelope figuring: Cost of pressing 4 12" -- roughly 4-6 dollars per unit plus about $1200-1500 for cutting and plating. Labels - 5 cents a piece (10 cents per record) Cover to hold records - $500 setup for custom art, 25-50 cents for cover printing. So your cost of doing a 4x12 with a run of a 1000: $6000 or $7000. Might be able to make more money that way. that is what it is about. it's one thing i liked about theo's rotating assembly album: you could just buy the ones you liked. i prefer things being on 12" press, so breaking albums up like that works for me. Yeah, like the Modern Love approach to the recent Echospace stuff. Even though all four records sounded quality I probably wouldn't have bought it if it were only released as a 4x12", but I wound up picking up two of the 12"s because they were released separately. And yeah, I am always looking for the nice loud pressing. I wasn't taking umbrage with that. Tristan === [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.phonopsia.co.uk
Re: FW: (313) new Tresor
the roof of the weekend club is indeed very nice, but bring good weather with you, otherwise they won't open the roof. it's raining today... thursday is usally the best day to go the weekend club, but as tiefschwarz is playing, you're right: it will be possibly more difficult to get in. but the roof opens roundabout 19 h, so'll be able to get in before it gets crowded roundabout 24h. for running order of berghain/panoramabar check the blog-entries on: http://www.myspace.com/berghainpanoramabar normally they post it one or two days before. i'll be back in berlin on sunday and depending on my stamina i'll probably go to the manuel göttsching birthday party as well. the line-up is ridiculously good! c* Original-Nachricht > Datum: Mon, 3 Sep 2007 11:34:48 +0100 > Von: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > An: "313@Hyperreal.Org" <313@hyperreal.org> > Betreff: FW: (313) new Tresor > No words on this but the program there on Saturday (Tyree Cooper, Baby > Ford, The Advent) has given me all the incentive I need to > know that's where I'm going. > If anyone's about and wants to meet quite a few of my friends and I will > probably go to Weekend either Thurs or Friday (I'd like to > check the roof out there - any advice on whether we need to go Thurs to be > sure of getting in, or whether Friday won't be too bad to > get in as there's no real big names on?), Tresor followed by Berghain > Saturday and Watergate Sunday for the Manuel Göttsching party. > > One question maybe someone on here can answer (or at least point me in the > direction of where I might get an answer) is - what time > is the headline name usually on in Berghain? FW: (313) new Tresor
No words on this but the program there on Saturday (Tyree Cooper, Baby Ford, The Advent) has given me all the incentive I need to know that's where I'm going. If anyone's about and wants to meet quite a few of my friends and I will probably go to Weekend either Thurs or Friday (I'd like to check the roof out there - any advice on whether we need to go Thurs to be sure of getting in, or whether Friday won't be too bad to get in as there's no real big names on?), Tresor followed by Berghain Saturday and Watergate Sunday for the Manuel Göttsching party. One question maybe someone on here can answer (or at least point me in the direction of where I might get an answer) is - what time is the headline name usually on in Berghain? I've been mightily excited about another visit there only to find its Layo and Buchwacka this week. *£%$^*&£!
