Hahaha, yeah, Steve contacted me to see if I wanted to head along, but
as I knew I wasn't going to hear any Hi-Tech Jazz, I had to politely
decline. I'd say i'd lean more towards Rob Hood's and Dan Bell's
version of minimal musiks anyhoo.

Plus I got my Richie fix in Berlin a few weeks ago... I saw him whizz
past me on his bicycle in Prenzlauer Berg. W00t!

I don't recall a discussion of BPitch Control here but it's a very
interesting label and I like Ellen's approach. She deserves her good
standing. I'm not crazy about her new album Sool but I understand her
experimental impulse with it. It's very subliminal, post minimal,
with found sounds and an ambient quality.
I really admire her Fabric mix - some melodic techno, minimal, BPitch
fan Thom Yorke present... I recall seeing her at the Detroit festival
a few years ago and thinking she was at a disadvantage playing in a
large arena when her approach would suit a smaller space.
Her signings Modeselektor are interesting too with their glitchy
urban. Any thoughts?

Why is it always Smash TV as coproducer for her albums? He never gets

What do the Detroit fans here say on the cosmic sounds coming from
Norway? I'm excited to hear Lindstrom's forthcoming album. Another
Station is my favourite song of his - sublime - though everyone rates
I Feel Space. Todd Terje too is up and coming and interesting. That
crew is quietly eccentric (Todd is into pop like Madonna's La Isla
Bonita) but they're making some lovely melodic electronic music that
I could imagine appealing to fans of the more melodic side of techno
(Mayday, Martian, Inner City etc).

2008-06-03 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I might be mistaken, but I try not to lie and I do quite remember
reading a different interview [although I'm sorry I can't remember where
or when] in which Juan was more direct about how KW might have
influenced some of his early productions. It was pretty unequivocal, as
far as I remember, which is why I'm [a little!] puzzled that this issue
has reared it's interesting head again. All might well be revealed soon
I guess ...

But Juan Atkins said numerous times that he was listenning to the
'Electrifying Mojo' radio show right ? Way before starting recording
'Clear' or 'Alleys Of Your Mind'...

Not only Juan, Derrick, Kevin, Jeff, Alan, all a generation listenned to
him.

Mojo played a lot of Kraftwerk music ... It's said in all documents that
can be found around the web. Maybe he heard them without being aware who
was doing this music and has been influenced without being really sure
of what it was ?

I've a lot of problems to trust that Juan Atkins was not influenced by
Kraftwerk knowing from various interviews that his wish to record music
came a lot from listenning to Mojo.

And when you ask peoples in Detroit what kind of music Mojo was
playing... First name to emerge is definitely Kraftwerk.

Just my point...

Nice, I think it's very funny tho :)

I like the idea of a Mad Mike BBQ set as well, the fork could come
with a voice sample "this fork is going in your ass, cos you're done
muthfuka" - well it made me laugh

Re: (313) Way OT but Bo Diddley died (RIP)

2008-06-03 Thread Fred Heutte
One of my biggest influences. I first saw Bo Diddley on February 15, 1979,
at the Ontario Theater in Washington DC, after my friends the D.Ceats
and then The Clash. He mentioned at that show he used to live on
Rhode Island Avenue in NE DC. When I was a preschooler I lived at
13th & Rhode Island around the same time.

About a decade later I saw him play here in Portland and asked him
about that. He was living at 26th & Rhode Island from about 1959 to
1966 (and I later found out had a basement studio where he recorded
"Bo Diddley is a Gunslinger," which is still fresh and vital after over 45
years). He lived there because he didn't like flying and wanted to be
close to the east coast theater circuit (the Howard and WUST in DC,
the Apolllo, etc.).

Bo had sass and style and wasn't afraid to mix in humor and a lot of
athleticism into his live shows. A lot of "standard" showy rock guitarist
moves were things Bo either started or perfected.

Nobody ever had a rectangular guitar like that though, and nobody
played the tremelo to better effect. I think he had an enormous impact
on surf music among other things -- just listen to "Roadrunner" to hear
that.

Bo was a big influence on a lot of guitarists I knew, including one,
George Thorogood, who became famous in part for his extended
cover of "Who Do You Love" mashed up with John Lee Hooker's
"Bourbon, Scotch, Beer." George returned the favor by having Bo
in one of his videos, with a classic pool table showdown.

Bo Diddley put the rock in rock'n'roll.

The whole argument is pointless. Trans Europe Express and Autobahn were
huge hits on black radio. I know because I heard them a lot on the
major DC stations (WOL and WOOK) at the time. Same in Detroit I'm sure.
Whether Juan was influenced directly or not is for him to say.
"Influence" could mean "I heard it on the radio" or it could mean "I had
the album and studied how they were making the sounds." For our
purposes here, what does it matter, Kowalsky?

For what it's worth, the first electronic pop hit I recall was Dick
Hyman's "Minotaur." That was 1968. He's a pretty remarkable guy, by
the way -- had an illustrious career as a jazz player, composer and
researcher and is still alive. He has recordings released in every
medium from 78s to MP3s.
