(313) ...meanwhile, back in Detroit

2008-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Okdokey- haven't got time for a biggie but here's a few Detroit related things:

New Mark Flash on UR is an interesting departure for him- very west
london broken beat/Jazzanova style stuff

New Mills- Alpha Centuri- he's been a bit hit or miss over the last
couple of years but this is a hit for me.

The Good , The Bad and The Deep from Rick Wade on Yore- double album
of Rick's trademark deep house grooves- couple of dodgy trumpet solos
here and there but excellent summer grooves throughout.

Dan Curtin 10 on Delsin- phew! What a scorcher!

Bernard Badie 12 on Mojuba- harking back to the old school sounds of
Cajmere, this is some REAL house music!

Electronic Warefare 2.1- perviously only through the Submerge site,
now more widely available- excellent mix by Skurge

Not from strictly from Detroit but check out the Alpha 606 12 on
interdimensional transmissions if you're after advanced Electro.

Really nice to hear Rythmatic's take on the early Kevin Saunderson
sound on the Network re-releases- amazing how spares and clean these
tracks sound after 15 years- simple but very effective stuff.

Stuff I just like:

Syclops album on DFA- Maurice Fulton crosses every genre known to man
with this double album- can't think of a single reason not to buy it-
its fantastic.

New Alex Cortex thing- wasn't a big fan until a couple fo years ago-
he's growing in stature all the time now though

Trelik represses- Make A Move by Minimal Man on Baby Ford's old label
get's a very welcome second airing- been playing this for years- it's
ace.

Losoul on fire as usual- remixing on Sonar Kollective

Move D- Drone on Modern Love- thought it was a bit dull at first then
completely changed my mind.

Sorry these reviews are a bit short!

cheers

Jason

Re: (313) Space Disco

2008-06-10 Thread Kowalsky
It's very usual do find country song patterns in technopop. Maybe
it's due to the idealization of the crooner figures. Stephin Merrit
said that too.

Yeah I think there's an influence, even though his roots lie in

He may claim or reject, whatever. He sounds retro, obviously. The
disco sounds, be it space, italo, or even latin, are there. Don't
you think? And i'm not talking as a casual disco listener.

To be fair to Lindstrom he rejects the space disco tag and feels
it's a media buzz, the whole Norwegian cosmic disco 'sound' -
only space disco homage he ever did he claims is I Feel Space.

Have you guys had the chance to hear John Arnold's and Jeremy

last two weeks. This is a re-cut of the disco classic Night Life
put our by Blair, one of the original members of the Blakbyrds.
Not space disco, but it comes close. Good stuff...

Quoting Kowalsky [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I posted here a mix a recorded, recently, with a lot of space
disco and
italo disco tunes. I love space disco originals, and was
suposed to

like Lindstrom's tracks. But they sound kinda generic in the end.
Honestly? I prefer some of the Cloud releases or even some
Italians Do

It Better releases.

What do the Detroit fans here say on the cosmic sounds coming
from Norway? I'm excited to hear Lindstrom's forthcoming
album. Another Station is my favourite song of his - sublime
- though everyone rates I Feel Space. Todd Terje too is up
and coming and interesting. That crew is quietly eccentric
(Todd is into pop like Madonna's La Isla Bonita) but they're
making some lovely melodic electronic music that I could
imagine appealing to fans of the more melodic side of techno
(Mayday, Martian, Inner City etc).

yeah, mark flash 12 is good - been quite surprised by the last few UR 12s
(footwars, billeebob) - good to hear a label drop something unexpected

also, the new gary martin 12s on motech and MG are good too - got a nice
dj3000 mix cd free with the motech one

and the new kenny larkin - don't know if it's been mentioned here..

and also, a few nice vinyl reissues from kraftwerk (no electric cafe though...)
and got the chance to get a couple of my favourite albums on vinyl - superfly
what's going on

all i need now is for rob hood to get back to releasing a load of vinyl, like
he used to and i'll be happy!

I haven't head any of these yet, but I anxiously await
the arrival of the new Dan Curtin. He hasn't released
as Planetary in years, so I am quite interested.

That Bernard Badie...nice. Gunna have to order this
one too.

I recently picked up the new Echospace[Detroit].
Supposedly Intrusion is an artist that isn't Rod or
Stephen, but I'm not buying it. The Phase 90 remix on
there is killer.
