The Beach Party, the Saturday night, summertime party at Water Taxi Beach, is back for another summer starting June 28 and ending on August 30. Residents Justin Carter, DJ Probus, and The brothers'brothers return, and the lineup of special guests is amazing! We're kicking it off with Moodymann on June 28. The Detroit legend is mysterious and great. He's rarely played in New York, and when he has, he's played short sets in small places. Tonight, though, he'll be playing for three hours on the East River. The next week brings over another gent who doesn't often play in our fair city, I:Cube, whose recordings released on Versatile over the past twelve years are the pinnacle of French electronic music. On July 12 we've got a set of fellas whose name we can't announce, but here are some clues: a duo of New York disco and house DJs who've released a mix for a Campfire and whose music goes down better with a spoonful of leather. We're sure you'll figure it out. On July 19, the long-time hero of Wednesday nights in New York City, Mr. Rich Medina, the king of a good vibe, will be dropping in for a visit. Then, on July 26, Detroit comes back to roost with Omar S, a producer whose music defines the uncompromising greatness of his home city. August? It's still a secret. (313) Another week, another few Detroit releases!
Patrice Scott- Beyond Deep and Evolutions EP- all Patrices' releases sem to sell out in our shop within about a day of release- anyone knwo much about him at all? Russ Gabriel is back with a few nice tracks including Future Funk vol 2 on Sestra Recordings- good stabby/clubby Housey/Technoy sort of stuff :) New Cassy 12 on her own label is hypnotic minimal House with (possibly Murat Tepei) simple repeating vocal lines- pretty cool stuff from the Berghain resident Franco Cangelli- superb release from Franco (who is a lurker on the list possibly??) from Italy doing some very well executed tracks all Detroity in flavour wihtout being overly obvious with his chords, 909 percussion and so on- I really like all the tracks on this one- Russ Gabriel pops his head up again on this record. Pacou- Tangent- may have mentioned this last week- I would say this is the best thing he's ever done- much less loopy/linear than the rest of his productions- not stunningly original (lot's of Basic Channel, Deep chord influences) but good tracks nevertheless. New Move D and Benjamin Brun album- haven't had a chance to listen to it yet- anyone else heard it? Things from Detroit I've not been so keen on (well, you can't like 'em all!) DJ 3000's new one on MoTech- just not very good. History Elevate 4 on KMS- Jesse Rose does a particularly annoying big room Techno/Electro House mix of World Of Deep- I can't tell you just how stunningly bad this record is- most of the other History Elevate series have been instantly forgettable but this one really made me feel like ending it all! Also, respect due to Eevolute for putting out the Wladimir M and Florence- American Heritage re-releases- they sound FANTASTIC (although Wladimir really sounds like he needs to get out more!) cheers Jason PS For anyone who's been waiting..2 new Iridite's are FINALLY ready to go after 3 months of arguing with Total Vinyl in London- don't EVER use them as they are the most disagreable and unorganised bunch of chaps on the planet! Releases should be out next month complete with the now obligatory coloured vinyl :)

(313) Fwd: [Techhouse] choice or dilution?
Raises a good point: that this phenomenon might not be genre- or scene-specific. m50 Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2008 13:24:14 -0400 From: Adam Grealish [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Techhouse] choice or dilution? the thought occurred to me a few days ago when i was looking at the lineup for bonaroo. traditionally a hippie jam band festival, the lineup this year supplement the expected fair with hipster indie rock bands and other acts just slightly below the level of full-on pop. This seems to be a trend. DEMF is a prime example. the organizers were losing their shirts throwing the festival. so to increase attendance the focus changed from a detroit-music festival to a music festival in detroit. there are two main points to this (1) hey, its more choices. more options are always good. plus, if it is the only way the festival can subsist than expanding the musical offerings in a good thing. (2) but wait. adding all these other acts dilutes the spirit of the event. the festival is turned from a focused study of one type of music among many like-minded people to hodge-podge of acts from the musical flavor of the month. the festival is no longer unique. It is just another music festival in a different city. And in such a case is it worth denigrating the integrity of the festival in order to keep it alive? i feel like a crotchety old man saying that i dont like all this new stuff while longing for the better-days of the past but i cant help but think that good music festivals are losing their souls. Re: (313) Fwd: [Techhouse] choice or dilution?
i actually thought the festival this year was really ok. for all its worth, the sound stages were great, and core artists played, even if others that are less than my cup of tea getting to play and make cash. they organized really professionally as far as i can tell. the landscape of fans varies, but i think it always has. There is a cool new Bowie tribute Life Beyond Mars on Rapster. Apparently Carl Craig has contributed, as with Kelley Polar and Matthew Dear. From what I hear, it's essentially the Detroit band Zoos of Berlin doing the cover (they've been recording in Carl's studio), and then Carl did a mix/edit/something-or-other on it.
