(313) Semi-Ambient Wild Kingdom (Radio)

2008-11-29 Thread Richard Hester
Last week's radio show featured a bit o'good stuff, a smidgen of bad
(some will think), and some decidedly ugly selections. The playlist is
up for perusal at http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=31535 .
This week's show is a delicate palate cleanser before I bring on another
Dutch Treat. It'll be semi-ambient, featuring cuts from David Morley,
Black Knight, Gimmik, Global Communication, AFX, Pentax, Pablo Bolivar,
Locust, 808 State, and more.

The Wild Kingdom airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday
Morning, 12A-3A (7A-10A GMT). Potential listeners outside the San
Francisco Bay area can find a webcast at www.kfjc.org (follow the
links). Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived there.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show Just
Desserts that aired on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived
playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve
1999/2000.

If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some promotion for an event, contact the KFJC
promotions department at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

Re: (313) Re: Rob Hood this Friday?

2008-11-29 Thread kent williams
Don't pass judgement on Margaret until you try and book gigs for a DJ
for a living. It's a never ending comedy of errors. While there are
really good people who book clubs and promote parties, it does seem to
be a profession that attracts the incompetent, the criminal minded,
and the insane. It sounds like Margaret turns up the Glaswegian fury
to 11 at the first hint of trouble, which can be counter-productive.
But it's not like she's never had to deal with promoters out to screw
her.

The best practice from my observation is that getting a signed
contract and a sizable deposit before traveling to perform. That
gives everyone a good incentive to make sure things go according to
plan. I've also worked with people who want to be paid in full before
performing. As long as you (the promoter) knows this ahead of time,
there's no problem, and the performer starts his or her set knowing
there's going to be no 5AM drama about getting paid. And yes, I've
had performers demand their fee up front out of the blue. It sucks,
but on the promoter side, sometimes you have to be flexible.

The Tres Manos story kind of bothered me that way, because it violated
the first rule of show biz: The Show Must Go On. Even if Margaret was
unpleasant, Rolando was there, his name was on the flyer, and he
should perform and get paid.

All my (admittedly limited) dealings with Margaret have been pleasant and
professional.

The Barcelona incident is old news. We'll probably never know what actually
happened, but the promoter certainly doesn't give a very good account of
himself.

Does anyone ever have any positive stories about Rolando's agent, I've
only ever heard bad $hit about her. It's not the first gig she's fcuked
up for him over money!

I'm really struggling to understand what an ocean cruise review from
2004 (from someone who is not him in the first place) has to do with
 this.

I think you've all lost your minds.

the promoter is a friend, and his account is verbatim pretty much.

acting like don king before a prize fight when youre about to play a
hot little club that cant wait to hear you can only get one so far.

I'm not saying i would do this, but on the other hand, i've seen mills
get handed a stuffed envelope at limelight AFTER he played, so you
know, can go both ways.I'm just sharin a story.

I said it was from someone in his camp.

In case it wasn't obvious, I'll make it easy for you:

(1) Re-read the cruise review (and realize that the poster is a flaming
B-I-T-C-H)

(2) Find the poster's name (look for Member Name) in that cruise review

(3) Set the WABAC for 2005:

http://www.mail-archive.com/313@hyperreal.org/msg67592.html

(4) Find the cruise poster's name in that 313 list archive post

(5) Put 2 + 2 together

Read the MySpace blog post that Jamie Hurlbut posted.

Kent is mesmerized by green eyes and Scottish accents. I'm not
mesmerized by anyone that just prevented me from seeing one of my
favorite DJs (oh, and did I mention, Minneapolis and San Diego got
jacked too) for reasons that pretty much resemble the ones in that
MySpace blog.

Someone really ought to remind Rolando (and Ms. Cruise Monster) of the

(313) OT: visiting glasgow dec 9th-dec 14th

2008-11-29 Thread Frank Glazer
I've talked to some heads off list about this but wanted to give one
final call out to the list. I'll be flying into Glasgow on December
9th in the early evening and staying until Dec 14th. What's the best
way to find out about club nights/parties to check out? I'll
definitely want to hit up rub-a-dub. Can anybody recommend anything
else in the way of shopping or sightseeing?

Also, on the off chance that somebody's looking for a dj for a party
or club night, I'd be glad to throw down a few platters. ;)
