RE: (313) Time's Up

2008-12-15 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Since Frank's watching I will put 'Plan A' by The Plan in my list
straight off, as I know it's a personal favourite of yours too Frank
;-).

More seriously, due to circumstances which changed my life substantially
this year [in a good way as it happens] I had less money to buy as many
records as I would have wished and I think I might struggle to come up
with a list which is meant to be *of* 08 given that, as in most years, a
major proportion of purchases was old stuff, and this year that will be
an even bigger fraction I think, since I bought fewer things overall.

Does anyone else have this prob? Also, what do we think of a list of the
year comprised of stuff from whenever?

2008 wasn't particularly 313 techno-centric for me (I'm trying Ken - really
I am! ;-) )

some things that would be somewhat On Topic

The Bamboos - Side Stepper
Hint - Driven From Distraction
Natural Self - The Art Of Vibration
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It
Nomo - Ghost Rock
Menahan Street Band - Make the Road by Walking
E.S.T. - Leucocyte

most everything else I've bought this year have been old funk/soul records
and a handful of rare Factory records releases

i heard them playing live this weekend and what shall i say.
it was one of the most remarkable evenings in a long time.
beautiful, deep, moody, funky but always making you wanna
dance.

absolutely amazing!

This CD strikes me as stupid good. where by 'stupid' I mean
intelligent, warm, subtle, varied, funky.

In particular the track "Honey" is a long form masterpiece -- the sort
of thing I wish Carl Craig was still doing. It starts out with a
looped, syncopated 4 bar loop that is instantly memorable, and slowly
builds up into an elegant dancefloor burner. Towards the middle an
offbeat one-note acid squawk starts that roughs things up in just the
right way. But the star of the show is that one loop, which sounds
like it's run through 10 different filters and effects, that all get
tweaked constantly to keep it fresh.

The other tracks are all over the place, from dubby to beatless
ambient, but always there's a ton of fine detail work to keep things
interesting and the sort of undefinable warmth I'd kill to be able to
put into tracks.

wouldn't have been bouncers in the first place.

Then there is this bouncer that wouldnt let him in...

Second-hand [but well informed] advice:

Dress as if you aim to make a small impression *and* sweat and have fun
- although of course you'll need a coat whilst you're waiting to get in!

Smile.

Don't appear to be freaked by the freaks! :) As you know, this is
perhaps the quintessential metropolis, and to a large extent people are
free to be what they want, especially at night, and it being Berlin,
more than the average number of people in a normal Western city, seem to
take up that offer!

Be sober.

Please let us know how it goes, including the gig. :)

some random old guy as far as doorpeople are concerned, advice about how
to get in (and when, I don't want to wait around 6 hours for the guys to
play) would be helpful.

To see Rob Hood and Doc Martin at Fabric (Fabric!! not exactly your
hypo-exclusive club) this past June, I had to pull off every social
engineering trick I know but I did finally get in. I'm not sure I'll
have that kind of patience this time. But I would love to see Octave
One (longtime friends and, to be sure, one of the great techno live
groups) especially in Berlin.

cheers
