Re: Echospace BCN Dub -- horn samples?

2019-01-22 Thread Andrew Green
I do enjoy a good BC vs DC discussion and as avid collector of both i feel
obliged to chime in - but yeah its funny how the latter do get some stick for
'following' the BC template.

the way i see it is that DC certainly picked up the tub techno baton but have
been doing their own way long enough now to have created their own identity and
sound. Certainly in recent years Rod Modell has developed this style of a
murky throb out his layers of samples and percussion. On concentrated
listening its very cerebral and psychadelic, more so that the more open sound
of BC. I ilke the way he conjures up different moods with his palettes too…..
from the icy coldness of ‘Coldest Seasons’ to the hot claustrophobia on Hash
Bar Loops. Auratones from last year sits somewhere in the middle; more
relaxed, shimmering and light. I also feel there is ‘soul’ to be found
amongst the catalogue a few examples that i feel…….

Yeah fair enough.

Of course I can only speak for myself in that I just don’t see enough of
“difference”, plus why I’ve heard from them isn’t as soulful which (again,
for me) makes it that much less appealing.

To me it just sounds like someone saying “Look, I can do it too”

Well ... I think the world is big enough for deepchord/echospace/etc to
exist alongside Basic Channel.

They're by no means the only people inspired by the intersection of dub &
techno first put forward by Basic Channel, or the most derivative.

What has always gotten me about their work -- and they've put out an insane
amount of music -- is that they take a lot of care in sculpting their sound.

Your mileage may vary, of course. Their performance at DEMF in 2002 was a
peak live experience for me...

Just saw that DownLow are (re)issueing Painless on vinyl
(https://www.delsinrecords.com/release/3949/the-connection-machine/painless).

Tied to 313 because I once shared a taxi with Minto and JT in Detroit during
DEMF2001 going home from the UR party, when i had just found a copy of CM's
Bitflower on Planet E earlier that week.
