(313) Stacey Pullen last night in NYC
So some friends were in town and wanted to go out and were excited to hear that Stacey was in town for a night at the Sullivan Room. The five of us got there early and luckily avoided the $15 admission (saved $75) The Sullivan Room is closing for a bit to do some renovations, I think a new sound system is on order. So this was billed as a pre-renovation blowout bash. There were even 2-1 drinks till midnight...sounds pretty good right? The unfortunate thing about it was everyone who spun sucked. It could be I'm suffering the let down from expecting too much. The opening dj's; Function (Infrastructure), Victor Ridi & Fong (Minitek), Sleepy & Boo (Basic NYC) played not one interesting track. The sets sounded like a mix of minimal tracks from the sale bin and a few old Transmat and Rob Hood numbers thrown in because Stacey was there. I was ready to leave more than an hour before Stacey started. But I decided to stick with it and have another drink. (more alchol seemed to help) 'Do NOT miss this rare NYC visit from the techno innovator on this very special night.' Said the flyer. As soon as Stacey took to the decks, I thought finally, amateur hour is over. Stacey started with a vocal sample of a guy talking about soul. Good sign eh? Well that was the last bit of soul I heard in the half hour before I gave up. Maybe it was that Stacey forget to restock his record bag with something new and ditch the pounding NYC house tracks circa 2000. Reguardless the New York University frat kids who showed up seemed to like it. Hope that gives you an indication of where the bar was set. I would have been mad if I'd parted with the $15 to get in, instead it was rather sad that there is still such a shortage of challenging and INNOVATIVE music in NYC. -dave
RE: (313) (OT) NI announce Traktor DJ Studio 3
Anyone else read the there will be importing support for iTunes? Wonder if this will save burning and importing runaround. Also is Beatport very 313 stocked? I've not taken much time to see what labels are on it. Anyone got anyone good recommendations from that site? One more thing...Satellite here in NYC was looking like it was going to close. I stopped in a few days ago and there is a new dj supply partner in the space( can't remember the name). The record stock seemed really thin and there wasn't many shopping in the store. I remember it used to be crowded pretty much all the time. Seems much more house oriented now, much like the old Eightball shop. Buying techno in NYC is really a challenge now sad to say. dave p

(313) Amp Fiddler last night NYC
Great show last night by Amp and the gang at SOB's. I missed Tortured Soul, they must have started playing really early. DJ True was spinning a mix of downtempo and soulful house...sketchy mixing but the crowd didn't seem affected. Amp went on at around 11pm and played for roughly an hour and forty minutes. There was a really good turnout for a tuesday night crowd. Although SOB's has a tiny stage, the group of six were all really animated. Amp switched from a standing by a vocal mike to sitting at the keyboards and back...within the same song. Two song highlights for me were 'Love and War'(an anthem here in Ft. Greene Brooklyn) and an extended 'I'm doing fine' which got a bit punk for a second. Everyone sang happy birthday to Paul Randolph who did a great job on bass. In the tradition of crowd walkup's at SOB's, there were two surprise guests, N'Dea Davenport from The Brand New Heavies contributed vocals to 'I'm doing fine' and Sheila Horne from P-Funk ccontributed vocals to 'Possibilities'. Both have amazing voices and left the crowd pretty stunned. Amp's playing Detroit thursday night at St. Andrews. So get out and see this show. dave
Re: (313) old moritz project...
marathon.hey, I've got one of those releasessomewhere. Seem to remember it being sort of hi-nrg sounding. It's from the late 80's I think. I'll have to dig it up and give it a listen again. Just remember the cover has a satellite photo of global wind patterns on it. Very different from what they are doing now. I can say that for sure. dave -Original Message- From: jason kenjar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Aug 4, 2004 9:22 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) old moritz project... hey folks. has anybody heard of an old thomas felmann / moritz von oswald combination known as marathon? are their records as good as their 'later' works, or were these more of a prototype?/ j

Re: (313) dark ambient
Also have a look for anything from Seekness. I've got the Devious Destiny album from '95 on Re-Load Ambient around somewhere and it's pretty dark stuff. Some of it is on tap with what Foetus used to do with sound collages and the always interesting Skinny Puppy 'Braps' btw, what ever happened to Re-Load (label)? I've got some stuff from Todd Sines from that label and a few other good records. +dave - Original Message - From: "Jernej Marusic" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "'Mann, Ravinder [CCS]'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, March 05, 2004 1:56 PM Subject: RE: (313) dark ambient > Also check out > Robert Rich & B. Re: (313) Robert Hood In NYC
> Did anyone go see Robert Hood spin last Wednesday night, Thanksgiving Eve? > How was his set and how was the event? I was there and stayed for about half of Hood's set. It was put together by Todd Sines and held at the Coral Room which for those who haven't heard about it, features a HUGE tank filled with water behind the bar. The tank has tropical fish and occasionally a 'real' mermaid swims around. I think the place isn't usually on the map for techno judging by the crowd. Todd did an excellent live set in X-trac form. Having seen Stewart Walker only two days earlier I rediscovered how good a live pa can be. Todd's set seemed to abruptly end...couldn't tell if it was a gear related problem or the staff cutting him off. He seemed a bit frustrated though. Kimyon (another Ohio native) played a 45min opener for Rob. Lots of good 313 stuff. UR, Dan Bell, and a few old Chicago classics. Rob started around 2:30ish and launched into a pitched up version of Groove La Chord and continued on with a pretty banging set. Again the crowd wasn't really expecting this and many departed. Rob's mixing was really clean and not having ever seen him before I was very curious. There just didn't seem to be any sort of atmosphere in the space though and I think a lot of folks were burnt out from the Kompakt party the night before. I would like to see Rob again. Does anyone know if he usually plays a lot of his own records is his sets? I didn't catch one in the hour+ I heard him.
Re: (313) New Planet E 12"
Yea' I just got this too and I think it'll be doing a lot of damage around the clubs here in NYC. Anyone else hear some 'Video Crash' on the A side? Also of note but not so 313 is the new Pepe Braddock...can't remember the title but search it out as well. +dave

Re: (313) film crew @ Movement
I also saw the crews and the promo for the film [313]Techno on the big screen before Gary Martin played. Guess something is in the works. There was a small blurb on the bottom of the Movement afterparty that said it was the preview party for a film as well. I only stayed till 4:30, did they show anything later? +dave
Re: (313) Movement '03
Back in Cleveland for a day of recovery before the final leg of my journey back home to Brooklyn. Had a really great weekend in Detroit at the festival and the afterparties. I'll probably need a day before I can write or comment on things from my point of view but overall I think everyone enjoyed it. Thanks to a lot of really cool people I met for the first time this weekend Dennis and Magda, you both are great. The list meet up at your house on friday was fun and a good way for me to put faces with names. You were excellent hosts and very generous. To all the other list members I metRob Theakston, Tristan, Bill Van Loo, Matt McQueen, TechnoToutrist Clan, Diana Potts, Ani, Plaslaiko...many more, it was great chatting with all of you. I'll have a photo gallery up on burnlab.net in a few daysafter a bit more sleep. +dave ps five fest for me: LiquidLiquid Detroit Experiment Shake Daybre Thinkbox

Re: (313) 313 t-shirts?
The '01 313 List shirts were limited to a run of about 500 each. Thanks to your support they sold out at the Record Time tent during the fest. A few lucky folks got some 'test' shirts printed on different color T's. Mike Himes (RT owner) generously funded the venture and did it pretty much at cost. Surprisingly a limited batch of unprinted 'white' test shirts were distributed to four london record shops and were immediatly bought up at $75 USD a shirt. And who says Americans will buy anything... Haven't summoned the energy to attempt production of another batch but if I get enough emails from you people maybe we can have a go at one for next year. +daffy dave (only clevelanders will get that) ---Original Message--- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 05/14/03 12:01 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) 313 t-shirts? > > I'm sure quite a few of you remember the 313 t-shirt designs that were voted on the eventually made into t-shirts that were sold at the Record Time tent in '01... was there ever another run of them? I should have picked up one then. Has there been a second run considered or another series created? I loved that show of talent that became wearable art. MEK >
(313) Jelinek/Fehlmann NYC review
I seem to remember someone asking for a review on the Jelinek/Fehlmann performance last night here in NYC. Here's my review of the line up: MIMM: These four guys started off and two were on laptops and the other two were on guitars. The hour or so 'set' was pretty freeform and moved between subtle clicky beats and dare I say more ambient moments. Some interesting sounds here and there from the laptop guys but the guitars didn't really blend into the mix that well. The sound levels seemed really low during the whole set and frequently the chatter of the crowd overpowered their performance. I would say they were a good choice for the intro. Velocette: Pretty much straight up tech house sounding stuff. Interesting moments here and there, but the set never seemed to go any where. His set seemed to end when the sound guy cut him off...very weird. Jelinek and Fehlmann were setting up on stage and both looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders. Not a bad set just didn't really seem to push any new ground. Miss those old Reflective days. Jan Jelinek: Looked forward to this as we here in NYC were treated to performances by most of the ~scape lineup last summer. Jan started off with a great Gramm cut, not sure of the title. The crowd seemed to lock in. Most of the other cuts were from the latest ~scape release and were modified and extended. The sound level got bumped up for his set and made all the difference. The one piece that was missing was the visualsthere were none the entire evening. Worth checking this guy out though. Thomas Fehlmann: Fehlmann's set was as predicted here on the list. Yea it was good and he did play all the latest stuff including a cut from the orb's Kompassion EP, but there was little devation. I think the sound system might have not been strong enough as well. Glad to have seen him but memories of orb performances where they really wreck their tracks (in a good way) live left me a bit empty. Maybe not quite the laptop dancer as Stewart Walker (who also was in town last night) but he does have some moves. Anyone else in attendance last evening? +dave

Alex Patterson has always been a fav of mine for far reaching dj sets. He even plays 313 material here and there. Can't get enough of the tea time sessions on groovetech and he did a great set here in nyc at the knitting factory last year. -dave > > IMHO...By FAR...z-trip takes the cake for genre mixing...and being able to pull it off. It's a lifetime of loving and producing music that sets this style apart... wish more DJs had the guts to spin out like this, it sure would make things more interesting! :) peace, Matt MacQueen >
(313) NYC List Meet Up
Apologies for those outside of the NYC area.Since our friends over in the UK seem to do a much better job at holding regular list meet-up's I figured NYC was due. I'm throwing a party this Saturday (march 15th) for my belated birthday and I wanted to open it up for anyone on the list to join in. It's going to be at Openair on St.Marks from 7-10pm. It's an early thing so everyone will have time to head over to Shelter afterwards for the big party there. I'll be doing a bit of mixing malarkey early and I'm happy to have Karl Zeiss of www.redantenna.tv stopping by for a dj set as well. I'll be bringing mostly detroit stuff, dusty and not so dusty to keep this list relevant. So stop by for a drink, say hello, and bring all your friends to celebrate the end of winter hibernation. Email me privately for a more detailed invite. +dave
