Here's a curve ball for the list.

I was working the other night, and in walks Jay Dee, only to ask for
Herbert's "Bodily Functions" LP.

Behold, the paths of hip hop and "techno" cross in ways.

Ferris Park is an often slept on house label from Highland Park.
This is by far their deepest release yet. Great murky vocals.
I highly recommend it.

Re: (313) Slum Village

2002-10-08 Thread Ian Dinsmor
Trinity isn't actually a greatest hits. Most of it is new. The "Greatest" SV
stuff has to include J-Dilla. :)
Its a decent record. They should have left "Fall in Love" alone, it was fine
the way it was.
The other record called "Dirty District" is full of unreleased SV material
as well as various collaborations. I think this one is actually better than
"Trinity." Just my 2 pennies.

Re: [313] ONE YEAR LATER

2002-09-03 Thread Ian Dinsmor
Although it's not "techno" per se, what about Theo Parrish's "Instant
Insanity." Not only was it a response to the events, it was released not too
long after. I think it was pretty limited in numbers though, and never made
it as a proper Sound Signature release.

I still think that his usage of the passing fire truck horn as an element of
the track made it all the more haunting.

And after seeing that he titled the record "Solitary", makes the 1st track

You guys may also want to check out the first release on Motech Records. If
you are into Detroit influenced electro you will dig this record. Its by
Black Phuture, and undisclosed collaboration of producers from Detroit who
got it right. Check submerge.com for info.

Re: [313] DEMF Update

2002-05-13 Thread Ian Dinsmor
I kind of missed the boat on this thread.

You cant forget the People's Movement. While not many outside of Detroit
will know who they are. Its a project headed by Detroit's own DJ Defiant,
who is one of the best underground hip hop DJ's in the city.
He is gathering a group of 40 local MC's and giving them time to shine on
the main stage at DEMF this year.

While JD & SV are great, there is much more to Detroit Hip Hop.

Check any of the Antidote releases and you'll know what I mean.

Re: [313] theo's mix of Jill Scott

2002-04-26 Thread Ian Dinsmor

Hate to burst all the int'l bubbles. but they are going for 20 dollars a pop
no matter where you go.

Theo had submitted the mix to Jill Scott's management for consideration, and
they subsequently said no. (Hence the answering machine message from Jill at
the beginning of the track.)

So they know its out there, and who did the remix. But, I really doubt they
will come after him due to the low number of pressings.

I can honestly say that the price is the *one* thing stopping people from
buying that record. Regardless of people's tastes all you have to do is play
"Another Day" with Jill Scott and they ask "Whats that?" Then they catch the
40 dollar price tag and its over.

taxicab

2001-02-27 Thread Ian Dinsmor
Ok,

so I was told that the track I was trying to ID was called "taxicab."
now i cant find a damn thing about it.

Is this one of those back alley, knock two times, and know the password
tracks? :)

anyone know anything about this track?

ID

Save the MCS!!

house track ID

2001-02-22 Thread Ian Dinsmor
I heard this track on a local radio mix last night and I have been trying to
ID it forever.

Its an older house track, Sounds much like "New Jersey Deep" by Black
Science Orchestra,
It has a female vocal that goes "We wont be gettin' down, up and down, all
around, not this time baby."
and then breaks into a funky ass disco loop.

not knowing the name of this track is killing me.

any takers?

thanks in advance

Ian

train station: was RE:Fabulous Ruins of Detroit

2000-07-03 Thread Ian Dinsmor
the old MCS is privately owned. (hence the prison like fence that surrounds
it.) I think it is by far the most haunting "ruin" in the city. Standing in
its shadow is a truly mystic experience. Imagining the thousands of people
who passed through those silent halls. it gives me the chills. being totally
off topic, does anyone know the best way in? and the danger factor? I know
that the police frown upon tresspassing but how great could the punishment
be for wanting to feel history? just curious.

(313) 89x suggestions

2000-02-25 Thread Ian Dinsmor
i totally agree with lance and sean on the idea of informing the crowd
(radio audience) about what is being played and who is behind it. However,
the person who is doing the show has to be well informed themselves. ive
heard holly & craig botch track i.d's beyond belief on X2K. to the point
where i just sat and looked at the radio in disbelief. And if he wants
suggestions for the show...Ian's list was excellenthowever if they are
going to drown quality 313 classics & new tracks with trance and Basement
Jaxx whats the use???

think about *detroit technology* and tell me how 89x feels about our
music...

(313) track I.D.

2000-01-08 Thread Ian Dinsmor

ok, im trying to I.D. this track and its killing me. (if you have Derrick
May's Detroit Technology tape handy, refer to it...its the 2nd to last
track) Its a house track and the chorus goes, " Come into my
world...Close your eyes and you can go, anywhere you want to
be.ill be yo' sandman...hey sandman." Ive been told it may be by Lil'
Louis, so while we were on the subject i figured id ask.
thanks in advance.
