[313] Erik Van der Broek

2002-05-13 Thread James David Beard
anyone know where I can find a discography of this
producer? Has he been active in music of late? I've never
felt so let down by internet searches.

[313] creativity is a force

2002-04-17 Thread James David Beard
// when i commented on Dan's record output, i was thinking about the idea
// that all music's hit a point where innovation gets
// overtaken by redundancy. and at some point you have to
// accept revisions on the original
// ideas, as opposed to startling new ideas.

in a universe that's expanding at an accelerating rate,
there should be some room for new ideas. new dimensions of
awareness are constantly being generated, and there is
much left to be formed by thought. The potential for
variation within a 5 minute piece of music may not be
infinite, but it is vast, especially if you consider scale
(levels of magnification) and setting (reference), and the
ability of minds to filter and transform experience.

reality is imagined

[313] GC-Maiden Voyage was Winx

2002-04-11 Thread James David Beard
#I don't see anyone complaining about Global
#Communication's "Maiden Voyage"
#(8 07 and 5 23 on the 76 14 album; you know the one I'm
#talking about).

So what's the story with Maiden Voyage?

RE Dan Bell Vs Wink--blatant rip off, but with
lousy beats and some decent spatial efx...thanks for
putting the tracks up Dennis.

[313] re: ismistik

2002-03-06 Thread James David Beard
I think all the ismistik releases are very nice.
They're some of my favorites. Trippy, refined melodic
techno with a pretty unique flavor--the kind that bounces
in your mind, makes you smile and sometimes pulls your
heartstrings. Classic sounds arranged in a direct, but
original way. They were definately channeling some good
vibes. I would fully recommend picking up a copy of Remain,
as I see it is currently available direct from djax... the
other three 12" are excellent as well, but may be harder to
find.

I've never heard his Ismistik releases on Djax though?

[313] time and space...everything...is a product of the black dog

2002-02-21 Thread James David Beard
I'm sorry you haven't liked more recent BDP. I really think
you should listen to Ken's deeply again. He's kept things
on a mystical vibe that Plaid as a duo have largely
abandoned. Check out the live in toronto tape for a glimpse
of Black Dog solo, shouldn't be too hard to find if you
look. \
...also www.dogsquad.com -- there's forums and a chat room
now. dope

#I wouldn't get too excited, The Black Dog being only one
#of the original 3 members
#(Ken Dowie) who hasn't released anything remotley touching
#the original Black Dog Productions stuff (remember
#Virtual)since the other 2 members split
#and started Plaid.

[313] 4hero

2002-01-31 Thread James David Beard
The most 313style 4hero projects would probably be
Jacob's Optical Staircase (including some Juan Atkins
collaborations)
and the
Nu Era releases (1/2 of 4hero)
recent releases under the name 4hero are more jazzy
drum in bass, earlier releases more hardcore.

they've put out a lot of material going back to the early
breakbeat era. Reinforced and 2000 Black are related labels
they run.

[313] re: Area 1

2001-07-18 Thread James David Beard
The t-shirts for the Area 1 festival don't even list any of
the Detroit DJs names. They lump them all together under
Innovators. A bit of a scam imo as anybody who doesn't
already know about Juan, Derrick, and Kevin isn't likely to
have a clue as to who the "innovators" are. So there goes
the support for Detroit really. The website wouldn't
announce who would be DJing or when. I went to the Columbia
MD show, and due to traffic, I got to dance outside the side
tent exit for the last 10mins of Juan Atkins's set.
Couldn't get in cause people were crowding at the entrance
for Paul O. Well, at least outkast was fun. It really makes
my skin crawl to think that for so many people, especially
in the United States, Moby IS techno. I actually watched the
first 15 minutes of his set from up close--Moby ran around
jumped on his korg triton keyboard more than he pretended
to play it, and in his own words "masturbated" with a heavy
metal guitar solo. He was arrogant and shameless, musically
moronic and completely devoid of funk. I used to to think
that he was kinda harmless--I don't believe that anymore.
