(313) Saturday in NYC: SITUATION
This Saturday, August 22 at Cameo in Brooklyn, FEAR OF MUSIC presents SITUATION: Atomly 'Geisterbahnhoefe' record release and the return of Mr. John Roberts, whose new EP 'Blame' was just released on Berlin's Laid imprint. Bios and links to mixes below. Hope you'll join us! -- SATURDAY AUGUST 22 FEAR OF MUSIC presents SITUATION JOHN ROBERTS (Dial/Laid, Berlin) ATOMLY (Atomiq, NYC) ‘Geisterbahnhoefe’ EP record release KEN MEIER ERIC WRENN plus Ashley’s birthday extravaganza CAMEO (inside Lovin' Cup) 93 N 6th St at Wythe, Brooklyn Doors 11pm, $7 http://fearofmusic.org http://atomly.com http://johnrobert.net -- JOHN ROBERTS John Roberts creates music that is meticulous and loose, evocative and innovative. Raised in the so-called heart of America, John's parents, both amateur pianists, exposed him to classical and jazz music at an early age and encouraged his fifteen-year training on drums and violin. During this formative period in Cleveland, Ohio, he began collecting records and eventually chose to relocate to Chicago, where he developed a taste for house music. As he began to gain interest in contemporary European electronic music, John felt it necessary to contribute his own production efforts. Setting out to recreate the energy and experimentation of the mixtapes and records from his past, John began working with analog synthesizers, antiquated sequencing software, and reel-to-reel tape recorders at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Four years later he relocated to Berlin to be amongst fellow producers, DJs, and the city's thriving music community. His new EP 'Blame' is out now on Laid, a subsidiary of Dial. ATOMLY Live at Resolute, July 2009 http://www.atomly.com/music/atomly_-_live_at_resolute_nyc_2009july.mp3 To some, the ability to cross genres can be confusing, even threatening; for Atomly, it signals his creativity and ability to draw from a greater wellspring than most. Over his last decade of production, Atomly's releases have to some extent reflected his surroundings: beginning with the IDM and breakcore of North Dakota and Minneapolis, past the house sounds that blended his years living in Chicago, through the minimalism and dubstep that emerged during his year in Berlin, to the techno jams he's creating in his current Brooklyn residence. Fortunately for dancefloors in New York and wherever his extensive travels take him, Atomly doesn't just produce: the man knows how to rock a party. His DJ sets, which have been known to take many an afterparty deep into the afternoon, encompass the musical dexterity that is his history. He usually performs surrounded by swaths of revelers, yelling, jumping, exhibiting intense excitement to hear him play, sometimes even in matching unicorn shirts. Since he first launched Atomiq Records in 1999 with his seminal 'Laptop Rock' album, Atomly has released on Wolf + Lamb, Carpark, and Fear, among other labels. He has collaborated with a cabal of artists ranging from breakcore with Enduser to minimal house with Shaun Reeves and Seth Troxler. His new EP 'Geisterbahnhoefe' is out now on Atomiq. (313) Traum Records Showcase in Chicago
Apologies to those not interested... "When you walk into the record store and look at the new releases, there are very few labels you can purchase on sight. Traum and Trapez are amongst the few. And they put out a lot of records. Both Traum and Trapez are responsible for pushing some of the most inspired pieces of slick electronic funk since the inception of Cologne's minimal movement. Artists like Jeff Samuels, Oliver Hacke and Akufen have helped to develop the labels instantly recognisable style, which has unerringly defined an entire scene, while remaining at once inclusive and experimental. That's a tough tight rope act to follow. It's no surprise that Riley Reinhold, the mastermind behind these sister labels, has a long standing relationship with the very foundations of the Cologne scene and has been integral to the scene's growth both at home and internationally." Taken from www.clevermusic.net DETROIT UNDERGROUND AND SUBSYSTENCE.NET PRESENT: SUNDAY FEBRUARY 27, 2005 TRAUM RECORDS SHOWCASE Featuring: TRIPLE R (RILEY REINHOLD) - Label Owner: Traum/Trapez (Cologne, Germany) KATE SIMKO - Traum (Chicago, USA) JESSE SOMFAY - Traum (Ontario, Canada) Opening DJ: DAVE SISKA (WNUR) Real-time Visuals: JEFF WEETER SUBTERRANEAN 2011 W. North Ave. Chicago, IL 21 + / $4 admission / needle drops at 9:00pm $4 tall drinks (flyer attached) DJ TRIPLE R / RILEY REINHOLD It's no disclosure that Riley Reinhold has been, and still is, a central figure of the exceptionally prolific techno scene of Köln since the late 1980's, functioning as DJ, journalist, and label curator. Recognized by German producers as one of the few DJ's that supported their music at an early stage, Reinhold developed friendships with many important figures in electronic music early on. Triple R belonged to the early Force Inc crew with Ian Pooley, Tonka, T.P. Heckmann and Alec Empire in the early 1990's. At the same time, he began writing for the most popular indie magazine in Germany, SPEX, as well as the Berlin-based magazine Frontpage, to which Reinhold contributed over 3500 record reviews and interviews with artists who were unknown at the time, such as Dave Clarke, Luke Slater, Dave Angel, UR, Cheap Records, Herbert, Carl Craig, Pansonic, etc. At the same time, Triple R was expanding his DJ career, touring Europe with Exit 100, Alec Empire, Ian Pooley and Pan Sonic, as well as landing residencies at the legendary clubs ELEKTRO (Berlin) and EGO (Düsseldorf), with Florian from Kraftwerk often in the crowd. In 1995 Reinhold and a few friends founded the magazine Buzz, which later became DEBUG. When the magazine became established, Reinhold stopped writing and started his own labels, Traum and Trapez. Since 1998 Reinhold has focused on the development of his labels, Traum and Trapez as well as working for KOMPAKT distribution. He has released music on XXC, Disko B, EMD and Kompakt, as well as his own Trapez imprint. Currently Triple R is a resident DJ at the Sensor Club, playing with guest such as Swayzak, Carl Craig, Daniel Bell, Thomas Brinkmann, Miss Kitten, Richie Hawtin, Markus Nikolai, Alter Ego, Steve Bug, Luciano, Broker/ Dealer etc. He has held lectures about electronic music from Cologne and also DJ?ed internationally for the Goethe Institute in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santiago de Chile, Mexico City and Bucharest. We welcome Triple R to Chicago and anxiously await his performance. KATE SIMKO Kate Simko is a classically trained pianist and composer who later expanded into jazz piano and electronic music production. Some of her projects include film scores, written and improvised compositions, as well as live piano and electronic music shows. Kate served as Music Director at WNUR from 1998-2001 and has hosted a weekly show on and off for the past six years. During college Kate studied Music Technology (Northwestern University), which exposed her to vintage hardware, as well as advanced software such as Logic Audio, ProTools 5.1 and Max/msp. Combining her musical training with her love for underground music, Kate is continually exploring a dialogue between the classical tradition and underground music - her two strongest musical influences. Reflecting her musical background, Kate's music possesses a harmonic, structural and spatial depth usually limited to classical compositions. Kate released an album on Traum in 2003 (as Detalles with Chilean producer Andres Bucci) and her piano composition "Rhodes Relejadas" was remixed by Thomas Brinkman and released on Traum in 2004. She has a remix of Philip Glass to be released in May 2005, a remix of Rebecca Gates in Fall 2005, a full-length Detalles a

The headliner, house heavyweight Diz, brings some hometown flavor to the dance floor while directing the spotlight; now holding down residencies in top venues around the world (including Fabric in London), he first got hooked on dance music at clubs like the Music Box, and threw rent parties in his Wicker Park loft with Mark Farina and Mark Grant — so he knows just how important looking back can be." - Patrick Sisson, Flavorpill Chicago Details: Doors at 9 PM $5 before 11 PM $2 PBR 21+ Flyer: http://www.interrupt-media.com/flyers/goingfwd.gif -- Tuesday, December 7th, 2004 Interrupt Media and Subsystence present another installment of: INFLUENCE Featuring unmixed DJ sets from: ALAN OLDHAM (alanoldham.com, puresonikrecords.net) MATT MACQUEEN (Clinically Inclined) MERCEDEZ BEN (Don't Stop) CHARLES ADLER (Subsystence) "Influence...gathers some of the city's most discriminating DJs and musicians for a night of unmixed sets that spans genres, providing the artists with an opportunity to drop some personal favorites that might not move the average dance floor." - Patrick Sisson, Flavorpill Chicago Details: Doors at 9 PM No Cover $2 PBR 21+ Flyer: http://www.interrupt-media.com/flyers/influence.gif -- More information: http://www.sonotheque.net http://www.interrupt-media.com http://www.subsystence.net http://www.covalent.org http://www.chi-tech.org

With several full length albums under his belt on imprints such as Black Nation and Theory, as well as a slew of singles on well-respected labels Ongaku, Inkubator, Public Transit, Moto, and 77 Records, Noel is no stranger to the international electronic music scene. In 1995, under the alias Monochrome, he is credited with releasing the first US Drum & Bass record entitled the 'Reconnaissance' EP. In 1997, as Noel switched his focus more towards techno, he released 'Time Dilation Effect' on his own 21/22 Corporation, revealing the Archetype alias to the world. Over the past 5 years, Archetype has steadily released ground-breaking and forward-thinking techno characterized by unique off beat syncopation and a rich melodic sensibility. His recent downtempo and hip hop productions caught the eye of Good Looking label head LTJ Bukem, who quickly signed Noel to the roster. The following release, on sub-label Cookin' Records, was recorded with fellow Columbus artist MC L Black. Additionally, Noel has recently started a new imprint called Glyph, part of the larger 21/22 Corporation, and completed two comprehensive tours of Europe and Japan. He has also performed at the legendary Sonar festival in Barcelona, Chicago's Red No. 5, Detroit's Motor, and the DEMF 'Eyes Only' after-party. Recently, he relocated his studio to New York City, where he both lives and works. His most recent output can be sampled as part of the local online magazine Subsystence [http://www.subsystence.net]. CARLOS SOUFFRONT (Interdimensional Transmissions, Detroit/Ann Arbor) Carlos Souffront is one of Detroit's finest underground talents. His taste, style, and integrity have made him one of the most sought after DJs in the Midwest. Souffront's initial impetus into the electronic music scene came from Detroit's rave heyday, a time when warehouses were profoundly inpiring venues with a singular focus on the music. He shared his first residency with Clark Warner of Minus/Plus 8 at Zoot's Coffee and Sound. It is in the clutches of this cafe that Souffront's style began to emerge, one that draws from Detroit's techno history but always attempts to push the envelope. His style was further refined for the dance floor with his residency at Detroit's legendary Sardine Bar, where he shared the decks with Stacey Pullen. Often viewed as 'the DJs DJ,' Carlos Souffront is a truly unique talent with an astounding collection of hard-to-find and classic records. Opening sets will be provided by local favorites MATTHEW MARTIN (Meiotic, Chicago) and KARL MEIER (Interrupt Media/Subsystence). Running from 10 PM to 3 AM, tickets for the show are $10. 21+ only, $2 PBR. -- Thursday, September 30 Featuring performances from: TITONTON DUVANTE (Residual, 7th City) MATTY (Untitled) COLEMAN BURDITT (U-Freqs) KEN MEIER (Interrupt Media) TITONTON DUVANTE (Residual, 2000 Black, 7th City, Environ, Metamorphic) Special DJ set - Columbus, Ohio If one had to say a few words about the multifaceted talent of Titonton Duvante, adjectives such as 'innovative,' 'ambitious' and 'creative' would come first and foremost. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, he was drawn at an early age to the upbeat rhythms of disco and the futuristic sounds of early electronic music. He admired the electro sound most of all, following the music of influential artists like Yellow Magic Orchestra, Gary Numan, The Art of Noise, Depeche Mode and New Order. He also was heavily influenced by classical music, and in the autumn of 1989 began studies in Classical Composition and Opera Performance at Ohio State University. In April of 1990, Titonton purchased his first piece of professional equipment and has been composing ever since. 1991 saw him form seminal techno group Body Release with Todd Sines, Charles Noel and Mike Szewczyk. Later, in 1993, he began to seriously try his hand at the art of being a DJ. His unique performance techniques have been shaped primarily by the ideologies of jazz improvisation and experimental music. Titonton has toured extensively on at least 3 continents, including high-profile gigs in Detroit, Boston, New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Geneva, Vienna,

[313] 09.08.02
sunday september 08 gramaphone records presents special guests sammy dee (perlon) cisco ferreira (kombination research) alongside josh werner (antenna) marko katic (antenna) dj mani (obS_ear) @ the empty bottle, 1035 north western, in chicago. doors are at 9 PM. 21 and over only. please show your support if you can. -- For the uninitiated: Critic's Choice in the Chicago Reader: SAMMY DEE, Sunday 9/8, Empty Bottle Sammy Dee and fellow producer/DJ Zip are Pantytec, the German duo whose Perlon label has been behind some of the best club records of the past couple years. Perlon specializes in "microhouse," a style (its name coined by the Wire, natch) that combines the minimalist crinkle-crackle of artists like Oval and the voluptuous warmth of Chicago house in a spacious, slinky sound that's both severe and inviting. Three of Pantytec's tracks made it onto last year's superb Superlongevity, a mixed double-CD label showcase: "You Are So 99," loaded with cut-up vocal phrases and frisky snare a la Herbert or Todd Edwards; "Instant Orient," which floats bits of what sounds like thumb piano, water-glass tones run through a phaser, and an abbreviated female moan past a deep foregrounded bass groove; and the aptly titled "Doubledip Uuh . . . ," whose liquefied low end and male and female moans give context to the catchphrase "Dip-dip-dip-dip-dp." The duo's first full-length, Pony Slaystation, continues in much the same vein: "Micromission" marks its pitter-patter beats and droplets of bass with a blurry choral vocal sample; "Elastobabe (Crackhouse Dub)" slides dozens of little details--crowd noise, stick percussion, half a dozen vocal snippets--into and out of focus. And "Candy Coated Conspiracy" moves among about five different grooves, all of them based on glowing subsonic bass pulses. On a home stereo or headphones, this stuff is gorgeous; on a big system, it can be overpoweringly sensual. [313] Frank Tovey
Here's an article released from Ananova about the news: Tributes paid to Fad Gadget star Tributes have been paid to underground music star Frank Tovey, who died earlier this week. The Fad Gadget star is believed to have died at his home on April 3. He played at the Swedish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA) in Gothenburg on April 1, and was currently working on new material. In a posting on his official website, www.fadgadget.co.uk, Tovey said he was planning to appear at music festivals this summer. Daniel Miller, founder of Fad Gadget's record label Mute said: "Frank was the first artist I ever worked with on Mute, he made some very special and influential records and was an exceptional live performer. "Frank played a big part in helping to lay the foundations of what the label was to become in the ensuing years, I will miss him greatly." Fad Gadget was the opening act for the European leg of the recent Depeche Mode Exciter world tour. Alongside Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal, Tovey was at the forefront of the Electronic Movement of the late '70s and early '80s. -- ken meier interrupt media group [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.interrupt-media.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Re: London
Dear fellow techno elitists- Some of you guys may know me, and some may not (probably because I lurk the majority of the time), but I had seen some posts like this from a few other people and I figured some of you may be able to help me out. I am gearing up to move to London in about 2 weeks to attend my junior year abroad at King's College and I was simply wondering if any of you limeys or expatriates out there would be able to offer any advice at all on finding accomodations and work or even just general tips on living in London (what to do, where to go or not to go, places to visit, etc.) Even if it is just music related information, that would be great as well. Thanks in advance for the assistance...I look forward to meeting up with you guys soon!
