 me and my questions...

So, i heard this remix of strings of life this saturday (played by smos
and
baby b, two belgian dj´s). It sounded very new, happy and latin-like (with
e-piano).. Does anyone have a clue wich remix this could be?
isn't strings of life, latin type ?
and the Network reissue I thought was the orginal mix

 Another Question:
Is the record Pepe Bradock - Atom Funk ever remixed?
I heard Derrick May play a track with the same sounds...
according to me
it is Atom Funk that he plays

 Thanks,
 Maarten

It only has that nasty 'leeking' broom sound of noise in the back
which I thought was coming from my mixer.

Anyway I'm listening now for the first time
and I think It could be recorded before vol 1

I still looking for some pushy/rolling basslines but they aren't there yet

This is my fav vol. of this series by jeff...very deep
and damn good...wish he would put out more of this
kinda stuff. Classic Detroit techno and highly
recommended! I got my copy through groovetech and I
think it was worth the $16 I paid for it. :)

also gotta say I dug Tom's new one on Nordic Trax too!
 ;)

anyone heard the new Arpanet (dopplereffekt) 12 on

 here's my spin:

If you beleive that we live in a somewhat free
country, then people are free to do whatever they
wish. So if someone wants to sell a
 promo/whitelabel on ebay,that's their buisness.
as for the SID records we all know you can only
purchase them in detroit, so it may be worth
someone's time/money to buy one off of ebay, if
they won't heading to the 313 anytime soon.

quite
an up remix, if you know what i mean. always reminds me of that Take
That
track Dave Lee produced, Relight My Fire... but maybe that's just me.

Not surprising, since Joey Negro == Dave Lee.

His Direct Me remix is great, btw. That was on another remix release by
Network called Direct Me Remix - Edition 2 that included Direct Me -
Joey
Negro Disco Blend Mix (A1), Direct Me - Reese Riot Mix (A2), Just Another
Chance - Dave Morales Mix (B1) and Station of the Groove - Vice Mix (B2).

It also says Track 1 remix additional production by Dave Lee (of
course),
and here's the kicker, Track B1 mixed by Jay Denham.

The Faith Hope Clarity package is also on vinyl (though the copy I have
is
the only one I've ever seen). Plenty of terrific stuff including two
Color
of Love remixes (but not the UR one, which is really hot, but only on the
original issue), Direct Me, the Bump remix of Miracle of Life (another
winner), Joey Negro's excellent So Deep remix, and so on.

 Master Reese, indeed ...

 Fred

PS Something else I never knew -- Dave Lee is Joey Angel is M-D-Emm
of Get Acidic/Get Angelic (Transmat), one of my alltime acid house
 tracks!

[313] OT rest in peace Paul Oakenfold

2002-03-03 Thread Mad'R
Paul Oakenfold dead after mid-air collision

Two gliders collided near to the border with Warwickshire
Paul Oakenfold died after a mid-air collision between two gliders and a
plane over the Warwickshire-Worcestershire border.
The accident happened just after 1400BST when a glider being towed by a
light aircraft collided with a second glider which was already in free flight.
Police said the towed glider became separated and made a forced landing
while the plane managed to fly back to its base at the nearby Bidford
Gliding Centre and make a safe landing.
The second glider, which is believed to have lost a wing, crashed between
the villages of Honeybourne and Bretforton in Worcestershire.
An eyewitness said the pilot tried to bale out but his parachute failed to
open properly.
A spokeswoman for Hereford and Worcester Ambulance Service said the Paul
Oakenfold was believed to be one of the glider pilots.
A second pilot, a man in his early 50s, was taken to the Alexandra Hospital
in Redditch by Warwickshire Ambulance but is not believed to be seriously
injured.
The third pilot is understood to have largely escaped injury.
Two RAF rescue helicopters were scrambled from RAF Chivenor and RAF Valley
in Anglesey.
The West Midlands air ambulance and a police helicopter also attended.
Forced landing
A West Mercia police spokesman said: We believe the light aircraft has
been able to land, one of the gliders has made a forced landing and the
other has crashed.
He said officers were still at the scene.
An investigation into the incident by the Air Accident Investigation Branch
will be launched.
The three aircraft involved in the mid-air collision are understood to have
all come from Bidford Gliding Club in Warwickshire.
The club's chief flying instructor, John Watson, told BBC Midlands Today
the collision was between a glider and a plane towing a second glider.
A pilot was seriously hurt in another gliding accident near Usk in south
Wales on Sunday afternoon.

Really, the Reese bassline comes from KMS.

I don't think that musicians need writers to transform their work into
something that is more meaningful. Most music is equivocal, and it is this
that has imbued it with so much power and meaning throughout history. If
an
artist wants some sort of narrative to their work, you'd expect that they
would be able to string a few sentences together themselves.

I've actually been thinking about offering my services as a liner notes
writer to detroit influenced artists. Taking the liner notes from EVERY
DOG HAS ITS DAY away from the context of the album makes it even more
apparent that techno artists need real writers if they are serious about
taking their artform and making it into a long term life altering
 movement.

Does analog mean : not a true replication of the real ?
yep trainwrecks can be beautiful.
(although trainwrecks isn''t the right word for it)
An old friend of mine always used a little delay when mixing
witch means you heard the new record come in with a little delay but with
corresponding bpm
and after some seconds removed the delay bye speeding the record up by hand
to the other record and the he mixed it through.
very cool if you do that over and over again (same like scratching or
beat-jungeling)

A while back on the Global Techno list, Max Duley was talking about the
phenomenal energy Mills brought to the tables clubs he played at in the
UK in 94-95, how (like the Liquid Room cd), the mistakes simply
magnified the intensity of an already supercharged atmosphere.

Isn't a trainwreck in the hands of a Mills simply the techno equivalent
of a blue note (in jazz)? The skilled musician's imagination triumphs over
the technician's 'mistake' converts it into a previously unknown sonic
form. Any slip always has the potential to be so much more in the right
hands. Chance + ingenuity = dynamic tension.

Just to correct a couple of details: Hot Lizard were Nottingham DJs Paul
Wain and Gary Marsden while Pacific was owned by Justin Deighton. Justin
has
a new mix CD coming out on a label called Product Deluxe (which I am
guessing he owns now instead of Pacific) that includes 'The Theme', so
maybe
he's planning to re-release it. It'll be worth watching the new label if
only because he used to have a knack of persuading some excellent
producers
to contribute remixes - Claude Young being another example.

Right, let's have a blast of this here new Drexciya album...

 TOM

afraid the info i have is limited. the duo behind hot lizard were
responsible for the british label pacific, which is now, unfortunately,
defunct. artists such as ian o'brien, sunrise society, charles webster
and
sterac recorded for the label. melodic, deep techno was their bag, but i
suppose people would now call it 'tech-house' (in fact, 'the theme' -
the
original version - is now considered a tech-house classic). 'the theme'
double pack has remixes by carl craig (which he put on his dj kicks cd),
charles webster and mark broom. the original, imo, ain't up to much, but
craig's mix is amazing (all 11 minutes of it). wally's grooveworld in
belgium had copies of it (think they still do). hope that helps.

The Khan who produced for DJungle Fever also produced as Bizz OD, which I
believe is the name that most of the DJungle Fever releases are under. I
believe he's from NY and did acid techno with a house touch here and
there.
I've also seen his name as Khan Oral. He also did a good deal of work on
the Force Inc. label in the mid 90's.

I have a few of the Force releases and a few of the DJungle Fever ones as
well. They are all quite good acid techno/house.

 That's all I know.

Well, as far as I know there are two different Khans out there. One is a

 really
like mainly because its quite different to everything else at the

 a
mix of indie, lounge and, well, techno - lots of guest vocals including

   other
good Khan records out there that sound like this. i heard he used to
do
some of the work over on the DJUNGLEFEVER label, which is the farthest
   thing
from this release since everything i have heard off of that label has
 been
   hard acid (good too!)...
and since i am thinking about dying and everything because of this

ambient. Krueder and Dorfmeister comes to mind. I absolutely love
the

Mr. Woolums has taken the words RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH!
How advanced is a piece of equipment that can finally do today what
certain

Where is the progress in TALENT? All this does is make it easier for djs

lack the ability to do it by hand.

 Regards.
i really enjoyed reading your stuff vince i think that u r like 90%
 right.
most of the time we think that technology will make us more innovative
and
more creative, but alas i think technology is just making us more and
more
 dependent on it.
creative is something that comes from the mind not something u can have
with technology, like any new gimmik the final scratch will come and go.
i
am not too sure that vinyls will stay for ever but i know one thing- all
 the
new technology stuff for dj`s is simple uncreative. they made software
who
acts as turntables ,they make cd who acts like a turntable. if technology
were really creative they would just try to immitate but to innovate
 something REALLY new.

i don't think you understand what final scratch is, and how de9(?) was
 made.
final scratch is a tool that allows use to use two regular turntables
 and
 a
regular mixer to control any a digital file on a computer just like
you
 would a
slab of vinyl. you slow the turntable down and the digital file slows
 down
 etc.
you do it live. it's not digital editing tool like pro tools or peak
 etc.
anything you do with you do live.

i'm briefed on final scratch. i've seen acquav!va use it. in addition,
 i'm
aware of the production techniques involved in the creation of both de9
and
closer to the edit. i'm also aware of the physics behind the technology.
i've watched these develpments rather closely.

you're missing one of my points: that many other DJs dont need it, dont
prefer it, and whose performance would be limited by said technology.

as for the detrimental trade on vinyl. well, it's heavy, wears out,
and
 is
 hard
to distribute. digital files can be endlessly copied and emailed all
 over
 the
place, placed on sites. it allows more people to have access to more
 music. what
you do on the turntables should be determined by your skill level and
inventiveness, not by the vinyl you can afford or have access to.
instead of letting record companies, distributors, and record stores
 determine
what tracks you have access to you can play tracks by anybody that
cares
 to post
   them.

your words are very interesting. so what if vinyl is heavy, wears out
and
is hard to distribute? all of those things are unique to the DJ trade
and
the art form. thomas brinkmann is able to utilize a unique technological
tool, one final scratch can't even approach and that relies on vinyl and
 not
 mp3.

that not just anyone can have any track is central to my argument. dont
think i'm preaching vinyl elitism - but if everyone had access to any and
every track, would they create something unique, special, or anything but
homogenized? here's an analogy - if everyone had the exact same make,
 model
and color Porsche, would it still be special??

more people with more access is giddy hat-tip to liberalist
egalitarianism.
part of the fun of DJing, to me, is digging through crates in used shops,
looking on the internet for out of print tracks, trading them with my
friends, cleaning them up once in a while and chatting with people all
over
the world when buying or selling vinyl.

what you do on the turntables should be determined by your skill level
and
inventiveness, not by the vinyl you can afford or have access to

contradiction! first you say that everyone will have access to more
music,
then you assert that 'inventiveness' will occur? my retail experience
 shows
me first that as soon as a new mix CD comes out kids are lining up to buy
the tracks on that mix. and often they don't just want the tracks - they
want to play them in the SAME order. second, since anyone can own and
play
 anything, what will stop

 3. track id's, just when you think you've heard it all, you tune into
Wdisko.net, and you find out there's heaps of lovely tunes just waiting to
be rediscovered in the old-disco section of your local recordstore.
songs i'm looking for are all from a mix by i-f for Wdisko.net:
 http://www.wdisko.net/audio/wdiskomix1.ram
 - first one i should probably know... 09:30 (right after 'the lover')
 - old trax/jack trax stormer... 25:08 ('phocque me, jacque me')
 - beautiful strings on this italo tune... 1:01:00
this is a really nice mix, in case you haven't checked it out yet, with
tracks by: egyptian lover, machine, kraftwerk, fingers inc (distant
 planet!!)and loads more.

Wdisko IF rule big time !

IF made me run for the store last month for Annie - the greatest hit
(the melody singing were making circles in my mind)
I thought it was a old sample madonna used but what the heck it was here
first single !!
It's a ''remake'' of Ëverybody

And Wdisko made my summer last year
I don't know if they're still on the air in R'dam but I got beauties on tape
that I'm still looking for like
You're the winner by High fashion

Anyway if you want to know what those beauties from the wdiskomix R mail IF

 3. track id's, just when you think you've heard it all, you tune into
Wdisko.net, and you find out there's heaps of lovely tunes just waiting to
be rediscovered in the old-disco section of your local recordstore.
songs i'm looking for are all from a mix by i-f for Wdisko.net:

this was done over the phone, 8/2/01. a longer version should be up on
www.ytic.com soon, 'til then, i figured i'd make some use of it!
  apple

AR: What's your current set up?
RH: Two turntables and mixer-- an Allen Heath modified with a couple
extras, you know, bells and whistles. The Final Scratch computer system,
a
hardware box, an Eletrix repeater loop-based sampler, a Lexicon effects
 box
(which I use to add delays and weird effects), the Roland 909 drum
machine
(used to create new rythms over records), a Pioneer CDJ700--I use that
to
play samples and voice loops, it has a great looping mechanism.

AR: What's the most you've had going on at once?
RH: Usually three or four components--there are some things going on at
once, and it's a little hairy at times. I have a master control in case
I
need to get out of there!

AR: Can you explain in layman's terms how Final Scratch works?
RH: It's a computer system which hooks up to any turntable and any
mixer.
It's a small interface box and a record. Everything you normally do to a
record, like cue, scratch, pitch adjusting, playing backwards--all those
things get sent to the computer and it does that action to the same
 digital
file of your choice. It is a way to interact with digital music files by
simulating with vinyl. There hasn't been a way to interact with digital
files that is as physical or intuitive as [when you interact with]
vinyl.
You can't do these things with a mouse or computer or even a keyboard.
 That
record just becomes a controller. It's hardware and software. It totally
  integrates with normal vinyl culture.

AR: Upon completion, what will be the market price of Final Scratch?
RH: They want to keep it accessible. It's aimed towards everybody, not
 just
highly paid performers who can afford high-end equipment. I think it
will
 be
around $500. It's aimed to strengthen the abilities of up-and-coming
 bedroom
DJs, DJs of all statuses and calibers.

AR: Do you think you are a DJ or a musician first, or do you think the
  titles are
  synonomous?
RH: I think those terms are becoming synonomous--and that's what I'm
more
interested in. The initial idea of DJing was playing back prerecorded
material. If i'm using all this equipment to modify what I'm doing, I've
actually changed a lot of the tracks. I reevalute, re-edit. It's started
 to
go beyond DJs, and that's where i'm headed--that's where the whole scene
 is
headed. If you're just in the corner of a bar playing records I'd say
 you're
already out of a job. You've become a human jukebox. There is arleady
technology that can DO that. I don't see any need for that. The people
who
are gonna stand out from the pack in the future are those who can be
more
than just a DJ or more than a perfomer, creating something only they can
create on the fly. The goal is to create an experience--to me, that's
what
 a
good DJ does. I've always wanted more, grasping at the unknown. That's
how
you have experiences. You don't create new things by reliving old
experiences. That's not forward thinking, it's not progressive. It's not
going to leave me fulfilled. I want something new.

AR: What's the best club you've played?
RH: There are good clubs everywhere, like in Frankfurt Germany (Omen,
260)--there are so many amazing places. But I do have a favorite place.
Detroit. The parties I've done in the Detroit area for the past 11
years--those have always been some of the most incredible experiences in
 my
life. DJing, hanging out and dancing.

AR: Can you ever listen to a song at face value?
RH: I definitely can enjoy a song. There is a part of me that likes to
 pull
things apart and analyze, but I think you have to have balance. I still
 love
music and a great song, but I also love the idea of seeing technology
move
so far forward that we can reinvent that song if we want to. We have a
choice now--in the past, once we recorded something that was it. I think
 the
end of time is now for that way of thinking.

AR: Would you say that if a track isn't a progression that you'd have no
  interest
  in it?
RH: I'm not that much of a purist. Every time you make a step forward,
you
have to look at what you have done in the past. There just has to be a
conscious movement forward. There are a lot of great tracks that are
reinterpreting the past, but they reevaluate it in a way that makes
sense
  today

Is there a kind soul with good encoder out there?
