Re: (313) Convextion @ Samurai FM
I swear that Convextion set was an hour of the sweetest music I've ever heard in a club. I haven't danced like that or got so lost in the music for years. They've also got the Scape and Deadbeat set at Mutek earlier this year which I've just listened to and it rocks. (313) Paris (was kings of techno)
What else is going on in Paris these days, is there much good techno about? I only ever hear about nights at Rex and very occasional ones at Nouveau Casino - are there many less obvious nights happening as well? In fact, what's happening in the French scene generally at the moment, anything secret and interesting we don't hear about?! - Original Message - From: KiDD*e [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Three-One-Three 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 5:10 PM Subject: Re: (313) Re: kings of techno If some of you are in Paris this thursday (September 7th), he will perform one of his 'all night long' set for the re-opening of the Rex Club : http://www.rexclub.com/ http://www.fcom.fr/ez/index.php/en/dates/(artiste_selection)/Laurent%20Garnier There are other interesting gigs the next days too. - KiDDy. - Original Message - From: Dale Lawrence [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, September 05, 2006 4:59 PM Subject: Re: (313) Re: kings of techno I remember Laurent performed at a party here in the wrong neighborhood where some shadiness went down. A small crew of 'agents of darkness' strolled in with their concealed weapons. Some gunfire took place and maybe someone actually got shot. Fuzzy memories where I think someone was wounded, but nothing serious. I also remember Sonar 1999 when Rich, Jeff Mills, and Laurnet Garnier were all riding bumper cars together--with much 'bloodthirstiness'. That was definitely surreal. At 10:48 AM 9/5/2006, you wrote: Laurent Guarnier started coming to Detroit a long time ago, and is a huge fan of detroit techno. Bone has great stories about Laurent DJ'ing without monitors at sketchy Detroit parties back then. And as for Aretha and Iggy, why wouldn't he know about them? I'm from Iowa, so I don't think I can judge who's 'Detroit' enough, any more than, say, a guy from Brazil. I do know that whether you like Laurent's music or not -- and he's hit or miss for me -- his hearts in the right place. Tremendously fun DJ to see, because no one in the room is having more fun than him. Either way, this CD obviously does not represent Detroit musical heritage.
(313) COMING SOON : ERELL RANSON - SLEEPING BEAUTY / AW-005 12

(313) Melodic techno (was new planet e)
Also, any one want to cite some examples of this recent wave of boring polished melodic techno that people are saying is not gritty enough? Are you all still talking about Vince Watson or just general trends in production? Can't speak for the others, but I'm talking about a general trend rather than any specific artists. If you compare current releases with those of say 10 years ago, they have in general become far smoother, cleaner and, in a way, colder. I rarely hear new material with the depth and warmth of B12, Stasis, GPR etc, or the raw grit of older UR and Planet E tracks. I think this comes down to the increasing use of software that allows a 'perfect' sound to be created, and also a stylistic trend (mirroring the development of other sounds such as minimal house and techno where this clean feel has been an integral part of the style). It's a very subjective thing, a lot of people seem to feel that striving for the so-called perfect production is an essential development, but personally I'm far more into a sound that gives more rawness, warmth and depth than one which is ultra crisp and clean.
Re: (313) new planet e
i feel that way about alot of melodic techno, not enough of it has teeth. of course there's also the melodic techno thats too dancefloor. its a hard combo to master, something thats good listening music and good dancefloor stuff as well tom I definitely agree with this, I love melodic techno but feel that the vast majority of stuff over the past few years has become way too smooth and polished - just because it's melodic doesn't mean it can't be raw and gritty as well. I much prefer music to be a bit rougher and with a good bite that all ultra-perfectly produced and squeaky clean. M.

What's the word on the festival next year do you think? I seem to remember someone saying that the license had been granted for more than just one year this time around, but I don't know if that's just talk. Is it expected to be a last minute thing as usual or were Paxahau granted it for a couple of years? Just curious 'cause I'd definitely like to go next time finally, but can only do so if I plan it well in advance Cheers! Re: (313) HIGH TECH SOUL DVD
I saw the re-edited version on Sunday, and the director's q+a session afterwards. I didn't see the film last year, when the response from everyone I know was overwhelmingly negative, but I didn't find it a bad film at all. It did have a very rough and ready feel (bad lighting, lots of shaky camera work), but the flow worked quite well (presumably the result of the re-edit). It's defnitely true that it never went into much depth though, and did concentrate almost entirely on the Belleville 3 (plus quite a bit with Eddie Fowlkes). The director was challenged on this afterwards, asked why there was little to no footage with the likes of C2 etc, and his response was that he wanted to highlight the roots of the sound, and that to expand on the second and third generations would take too much time and allow less depth on the subject. I feel it would have been better to include more of the later artists though, particularly since they gave a lot of screen time to Spectral and Plus 8 but almost none to other local labels. Which brings me onto my one real major criticism of the film - I thought the music chosen was really weak. Apart from the obvious backdrops of No Ufo's, Strings of Life and Big Fun, a lot of the scoring was really dull, and all the club footage seemed to be focusing on straight, loopy material, with very little variety. A shame for a project which should be so clearly music led. Overall, it's a nice enough work with plenty of amusing footage, but I don't think it'll hold any surprises for those already into this music (the best new thing I learned from it is that Belleville is the home of the reknowned Strawberry Festival ;-), and perhaps it lacks that extra passion needed to turn new people onto this sound...

For clubs, be sure to check out: Moog - http://www.bcn-nightlife.com/en/clubs/164 Nitsa - http://www.nitsa.com/ (the 2 best IMO) There's also Razzmatazz / The Loft, but I'm not into it to be honest, too much of a big tourist spot, a bit soulless - like Fabric in BCN. I think La Terrazza is shut down now, which is a big shame - if it's re-opened definitely go there, amazing venue. For record stores check out Sci-Fi, just off the top of La Ramblas.
