Re: (313) [OT] best broken beats dj ?

2003-08-31 Thread Mehmet Koryurek
I also agree that broken beat should be a compliment to the set you play.
Especially eclectic, downtempo more soulful stuff and some soul techno sets.
Gilles Peterson, Recloose, Domu, Bugz in the Attic, Rainer Truby (tho more
brazil), Quantic are some of the names that are big in the scene.

 So my question is :

what is the best broken beat dj for you and why ?

nothing is more boring than a dj that only plays brokenbeat.
in my opinion it works best when combined with other genre's, so it can
enhance the deepness of the house tracks, or the pure energy of the techno
 tracks.

i think titonton does that, and so do domu and recloose.
there's a nice titonton mix up on betalounge [date: 01/25/01]

another dj i often see referred to as an excellent dj is charlie dark,
he's
got a mix up on betalounge aswell [date: 10/13/01] haven't heard it myself
 though.

the best resource for brokenbeat audio is probably
 http://www.nuwaveradio.co.uk
you'll find some somatik mixes there aswell.

I saw him in france 5 years ago, he plays cool soulful/jazzy house, he did
then anyway. But who knows a lot of the house dj's these days are spinning
that awful progressive house crap. Not excluding Mark Bell from LFO, he
played a dj set a couple weeks ago in nyc and it was truly AWFUL ! Todd
Sines opened for him and dropped an old LFO track before he came on and he
just went right on into the CHEESE.

namely DINAMO 103.8 FM in Istanbul during August. This radio station will
solely dedicate itself to broadcast electronic/dance music for 24 exciting

prolific times of its recent history. With a vast and ever growing number of
talented producers/dj's and it unique independent sound, the city is at the
verge of becoming one of the most important centers for electronic music and
lifestyle. Please take note that Turkey is a very young nation the median

Oh yeah I forgot to mention on the subject of Acid Jazz you had the Giant
 Step thing going on
 in NYC.

Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!)

2003-04-08 Thread Mehmet Koryurek
as a matter of fact, acid jazz has no link to acid house. back in 87-89 acid
house was popular and the nu jazz sound was more towards the soul II soul
and talkin loud sound of beefed up rb/soul style. i think, in order to make
ppl understand and categorize music what they have done was to coin the term
acid jazz to make ppl think that its diff. than your regular jazz trax and
has more of a club feel. Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Incognito, Banderas,
Urban Poets, His Emperors New Clothes, Ronny Jordan and the like had a
similar sound. And there were three main labels pushing this sound, and one
was named Acid Jazz, the othe two being Talkin Loud and MoWax.
Funny enough its very rare that a typical acid machine like 303 was used in
any track defined as Acid Jazz.

my 2 cents:)
Mehmet

lets not get acid house confused with the genre acid jazz.
I rember first hearing about acid jazz back in 1989, The Crazy Frenchmen -
Jazz It Up comes to mind as an early 90's acid jazz track.

Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!)

2003-04-08 Thread Mehmet Koryurek
and this is how allmusic describes acid house

The style of dance that exploded American house music around the world,
Acid House first appeared in the mid-'80s in the work of Chicago producers
like DJ Pierre, Adonis, Farley Jackmaster Funk, and Phuture (the latter of
whom coined the term in their classic single, Acid Trax). Mixing elements
of the house music that was already up and running in Chicago (as well as
New York) with the squelchy sounds and deep bassline of the Roland TB-303
synthesizer, acid house was strictly a Chicago phenomenon until stacks of
singles began to cross the Atlantic, arriving in the hands of eager young
Brits. The sound jelled in small warehouse parties held in London in
1986-87, and then went overground during 1988's infamous Summer of Love,
when thousands of clubgoers traveled to the hinterlands for the massive
events later known as raves. Acid house hit the British pop charts quite
quickly, with M/A/R/R/S, S'Express, and Technotronic landing huge hits
before the dawn of the '90s. By that time, the acid house phenomenon had
largely passed in England and was replaced by rave music. New-school U.S.
producers from Cajmere to Armand Van Helden to Felix Da Housecat kept the
sound alive and well during the '90s.

thats why i said acid jazz and acid house have nothing in common apart from
being a sub genre of electronic music and having the Acid in front of them:)

I never had the pleasure of meeting Laura in person. I first got in touch

was a tru believer of this music. I was also in the midst of doing business
with her and was wondering why she didn't get back to me. When I read the

 We
expect good DJs to challenge our expectations and constantly surprise us,

You might - I expect a good (club) DJ to make me dance.

I expect them to make me dance through playing new and exciting music.

If you really want your expectations challenged and to be 'constantly
surprised', would you really go to Lost?

I used to go to Lost to be challenged. As P Dircon has pointed out, they
used to book DJs like Mike Dunn and Mark Broom. One particular party
springs
to mind - the Axis party with Mills and Hood in 95 (I think). That was a
real eye-opener, but I haven't heard sets liek that from either Hood or
 Mills since.

 why I
think I will make them back to normal this
 evening When I try to
 mix 2
tracks that are both between -2/+2 , then there is
 NO WAY I can keep
 them
  synced! NO WAY!

don't you have to get them adjusted with an
oscilloscope for proper quartz lock when you put them
 back to 0?

brubaker (like nearly all the aliases) is peter ford
 and mark broom..
 there
was a brubaker track on their comp 'technoir' from a
 couple of years
 ago
too.. v.good comp - was lucky enough to be given a
 copy by peter ford
 in
 smallfish one night :)

the stuff he makes now is a far cry for the stuff he
made back in the oldskool. beach bump anyone?
I personally don't mind a couple of cuts off the
fordtrax lp , espec fordtrax and crashing new york

on the abonis debarkle , wasnt there a track by a
mexican , a puerto rican and something called 'do it
properly' that had the same bassline? could this have
 been sampled?

finally, I saw a record in the store a week or so ago
by something like compact blue. it had a sticker on it
saying new Carl Craig production is this correct,
and if so what is it like? (someone else bought it
before I could get to it)

 This just in:

The kind folks at Submerge were contacted this morning concerning a post
on
their web site forum concerning Josh. Someone at Ovum threatened them with
a
defamation of character suit due to a not so nice post about Josh on their
forum. They were asked to remove the post from their site. This character
also told the forum admin that they are going to sue Dan Bell for
defamation
as well.I wish this was a joke

  ['superfreak' is licensed)

Ok...I take this to mean the track is licensed to Ovum...

Did the guy mention whether or not Dan would be receiving his due or not?

in Toronto a week after the DEMF and in Ghent recently and he blew my mind
 on both occasions!

Do any Djs keep a list of keys of various tracks (as well as BPM)?
(key as in F or Bflat etc. -the tonal center of a track or
whatever
 you choose to call it)

 If so:
What are the most frequently used keys?
What are the least frequently used keys?
Do certain producers have favorite keys?
What's the BMP limitation on changing tracks with different keys?
Like if you're going from F to G (Maj 2nd up), What does that amount to
in
BPM change if the F track is BPM=120 and the G track is BPM = x?
Anybody
 work with stuff like that?

I believe it is Ruffneck's track and the other one is not a sampled song
I believe it is the real one 'I love music' by the O'jays

I think that's Ruffneck's All That Jazz on MAW, which I heard Derrick
May
play a few times around 1998.

 Jonny.

Right, I've got this tape mixed by Derrick May at Simon's in Gainsville
(I
believe 1998), somewhere around 50min he plays 'Silvery Sounds' by Sound
Of
K on Fcom, right after that he plays this track which is kinda the
ultimate
party track: a kind of jazzy, big band bass line and this female scatting
voice over top talking about the moo-moo blues in an incredibly fast way,
what the hell is this track?!
