Golan Levin: Golan Levin is interested in creating artifacts and
experiences which explore supple new modes of nonverbal expression. He
received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the MIT Media Laboratory,
where he studied with John Maeda in the Aesthetics and Computation Group.
His current project is the Telesymphony, a
concert whose sounds are wholly produced through the
carefully-choreographed ringing of the audience's own mobile phones.
Scribble_ is a half-hour color-music concert performed live on the
Audiovisual Environment Suite. Scribble revives and updates a decades-old
tradition of kinetic light performance, featuring tightly-coupled sounds
an dynamic visuals which are at times carefully scored, and at other times
loosely improvised.

Bill Van Loo: Bill Van Loo has been playing electronic music live for over
6 years, and during that period has investigated the possibilities and
challanges of how to present it in a live setting. With performances
ranging from the Detroit Electronic Music Festival to small,
listening-oriented rooms, Van Loo has played in a variety of situations
and to a range of different audiences. Van Loo has played in a variety of
situations and to a range of different audiences. These experiences will
serve as jumping-off points for discussion. Topics include audience
expectations, hardware and software solutions and possibilities, and an
overview of the past, present and future of live electronic music.

I actually asked him why he doesn't come to Detroit any more when I
talked to him at Record Time. He sort of avoided the question and
mentioned that he is actually banned from performing in Ann Arbor. He
seemed really quiet about it so I didn't try and squeeze an answer out.
Perhaps it is none of my business.

OK I love Richie more than I can really explain, but let's think about how
many times he has been here since the last DEMFmu1, Plus 8, Record
Time, mu2. Even I might say he is getting overplayed.

I seriously doubt any future DEMF will have a closing set as incredible to
offer as his last year though.

Re: [313] DEMF no Ritchie Hawtin!!

2001-03-29 Thread Rachael Ann Stiegel

It is a matter of taste, but most people would agree that Richie is
probably one of the most enthusiastic people about Detroit and his love
for this city and excitement about what was happening was very effectively
relayed in his set that night. While he was by no means the only
incredible act, I felt his set embodied lvoe for this city and its music.

Re: [313] not black enough

2000-12-09 Thread Rachael Ann Stiegel

Hehehe this reminds me of when I first started listening to techno and for
some strange reason I thought Jeff Mills was white

Someone brought up Richie Hawtin and it not mattering that he is white
because he is an incredible producer. I wonder if so many people would
ahve had a problem with Plus 8 using The Future Sound of Detroit as
their logo if Richie were black.

-Rachael

 On Fri, 8 Dec 2000, Jayson B.
wrote:

To be able to go agianst the current black musician stereotype is VERY
difficult. The media has burned in the minds of America's youth that
black culture is all about chillin in the ghetto, and sex.

I digress. The media is not the only culprit in this stereotype. Black men
themselves (and i'm not speaking for all of them), are more than helping
along this stereotype. Last time i checked, noone was holding a gun to puff
daddy or Jay z's head to write the music they do (or sample) or the video's
 they star in.

I know i'm not quoting (i already deleted the quote from my message, and i'm
too lazy to go back) directly, but does all of this mean that white
producers have no credit what so ever? Has all the techno that those crazy
swedes have been putting out been for nothing? Is Richie Hawtin a terrible
producer because he's not black? Have whites no real creativity when it
 comes to dance music?

I'm assuming you all answer no. And with that, i ask you another question:
since trance is written dominantely by white people, does this reason alone
 make it uncredible?
