Re: (313) 2000 One, Serge Blenner
I picked up a second hand record on 100% Pure by an artist(s) under the name of 2000 One. The ep is called 'Belongings'classic sounding Detroit string- laden stuff...Anyone any ideas who's behind this? it's Dylan Hermelijn aka Edge Of Motion also try to catch the one on Eevo Lute And the three excellent tracks on the Eevo Lute Agenda 21 compilation! http://www.discogs.com/release/82573
Re: (313) George Clinton Answers
Certainly doesn't annoy me. Makes me imagine music I want to produce... even if its not an all encompassing definition of techno (not that such a thing meaningfully exists). ScottV. To begin with, I am not sure how it ended up on that site, but it's kinda cool. I did the interview a few months ago for an RB magazine and it fitted the context since he had just performed at the DEMF. He is actually working on a new album of 'techno doo-wop'. Just last week I finally remembered to send the quote to a good friend of mine in Detroit and he circulated it maybe. I then saw it on a Skruff newsletter I got. George had never toured Australia before. I am not even sure if he has talked to Australian media before. I knew people here, especially younger people, would be interested in his thoughts on techno generally (as well as hip-hop) and so that was on my list of questions - that quote was a useful device to draw a link. George came across as very mellow, and was far from annoyed, he doesn't seem to get annoyed by too much. I don't believe in asking veteran artists purely about their past (he says he doesn't recall much about his anyway) as it then assumes people are musuem pieces and have nothing else to offer. If anything, that can annoy artists. From Derrick's standpoint, I think in interviews he has always been someone who carefully thinks about what he says because he knows it's for prosperity. It's more being misquoted that gets to him. The quote is part of techno's mythology, so if it dies, techno dies. Does that quote really annoy anyone? I would be interested to know. I think there's more annoying things - like being marginalised by the likes of Sasha and Digweed, or people assuming that if you're techno you will play a certain kind of techno, or being musically stereotyped, or whatever.

Re: [313] Lil Louis Out of Napster
this is a pretty silly move it's so difficult to get his records anyway... now less people are gonna have access to his music. as i was just discussing with a friend we would by his records as soon as we saw them regardless if we had them in mp3 format or not. i do understand that it is his music and he has the right, but it seems a little weird to me. I always thought napster really came into its own with difficult to find underground stuff. I have found mp3's of tracks I sure as hell wouldnt be able to find on record... Guess I downloaded a copy of french kiss just in time. Artists dont get royalties from second hand sales, so if a track is way out of print it might as well be available in some way. Any serious music lover dislikes the quality of mp3's anyway - so its not like they wouldnt buy it if they could. Scott. http://www.mp3.com/ScottVallance
retro futurism (sort of RE:[313] Perspects IN NYC)
sense of style) these two bring the sounds of Yesterday's Tomorrow today. Just noticed this in a post and it reminded me of deep dish and how they consider their music retro futurism. I think they said its mainly because of their use of analog synths - anyway my point is this: I still think of synth pop/electronic as futuristic music and analog synths as futuristic synthesizers. It might be yesterdays fashion or technology - but todays technology and fashion is generally less futuristic. A high-tech synth that does a great job of sounding like a centuries old instrument is not terribly futuristic to me. I dont think we need to call it retro futurism, its still the music of tommorow. A cheesy 70's scifi synth sound is far more modern than the guitars of the current bands. Bring on the exploration of sounds, even if some ppl think it sounds out of fashion. Re: [313] musical question ... minimal classical
Reich is the man though... his phase pieces, music for 18 muscians, tellihem (sp?!?!) *swoon* i've heard a lot of remixes of come out ... ken ishii played one last year on NYE... Reich's drumming is fantastic. Its impossible to listen to it and not see the similarities to some techno - some of Rob Hood's stuff (particuarly some of Internal Empire like Minus) springs to mind. Scott.
Couple of new tracks (spamish)
Hey, well the concensus on mp3.com spam was a definate go-ahead by all who voiced an opinion - although it should be noted they were all mp3.com'ers themselves :) Its kind of topical because I've been inspired by mills and made a couple of soundtracky type songs. They aren't for a real film however - just try to imagine one when you listen. The Miner is quite basical channel so feel free to debate whether i've been too true to sound and unimagive or whether it is legitimately inspired :) Set in the 30th century, asteroid mining has become an essential cog in continuation of the resource consuming technocracy. Freelance miner's pilot their crafts in the maelstrom of remote asteroid belts. AMC Headquarters spans the surface of an entire planet, it's unfathomable power controlled by but a few. The tracks form a score to a fictious movie. 'The Miner' guiding his craft through the chaos sees a magnificient display of the light refracted through vapour trails. 'The Corporation' headquarter's sheer magnitude creates awe, it rests like a huge monolith as crafts constantly come and go. Tbe Miner 137 bpms. Asteroid belt FN57, galaxy C197. mp3.com on or off topic? (+update)
Hi, I've been kinda wondering what the list thinks about mp3.com artists notifying the list about updates. I know it fits into the definition of being on topic, but does it annoy anyone out there? Well assuming it doesnt, I've uploaded a new track. As always I'd love feedback (but hey noone ever does, so I dont know why I ask :) SkyScraper Ruins Detroit 130 bpms. RE: [313] Mellow Mills (liner note dribble)
re: jeffs liner notes on his records: am I the only person that thinks its all total dribble? I mean, really! no I definately think its dribble, have you read the lifelike compilation notes? *sheesh* If he wants us to know about him, why doesn't he just talk a bit about his life, his family etc etc All this intellectualising gives no insight into him except to say he's a bit full of it. ScottV.
New track for you all
I've stuck a new track up on my site - its a harder detroit sort of style (think hard Claude Young I guess). I'm really wanting some feedback because its the first harder style track I've put up. Anyway heres the details: Calculations Description: 145 bpms. Hard techno, with lots of effects. This is a pretty big deviation from my normal style, but don't worry I've got some more mellow tracks nearly finished :) http://www.mp3.com/ScottVallance Thanks! ScottV.
KMS records
Those very kind people at KMS records have made some of their back catalogue available on mp3.com. This includes one of my all time favourites Ahnongay... I seem to remember it used to get quite a bit of play on dreaming daisies (for those in adelaide :)... anyway enjoy! http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/116/kms_records.html ScottV. http://www.mp3.com/ScottVallance
Re: [313] dj software
whether mp3 mixing is good or bad, I dont really care, but it is fun... I definately recommend http://www.carrotinnovations.com its got all the features and you can do it with 1 sound card and still have a headphone preview if you have a stereo splitter... Christian you'll be disgusted to know i've enjoyed mixing your tracks as mp3s on many an occasion :) ScottV. http://www.mp3.com/ScottVallance
Re: [313] Mp3 bitrate [OT]
yup, but it can be decoded and recoded, try eletronic cosmo if you want something free... try to get a real mp3 coder though, as free ones tend to effect the quality of the file fairly noticeably. http://ec2000.xperiment.net ScottV. A new track of mine on mp3.com (+ other 313 tracks)
I've finally uploaded another track to mp3.com. It's taken a while but I have quite a few new tracks ready to go, mostly harder, but some (like this one) are very detroit. Feedback is always wanted! In Transit, Deep Space Description: 125 bpms. Sweet futuristic sounds, with an Atkins like bass. Uploaded 1 May 2000. http://www.mp3.com/ScottVallance -- Also some other mp3.com things to check out: Firstly, Ewan Jansen (who features in Andrew Duke's May 2000 top 20) has some tracks on mp3.com, definately worth a 313'ers time checking them out. http://www.mp3.com/ewan and his partner in crime (on redember records), Justin Zerbst http://www.mp3.com/zerbst And secondly, two 313ers who's track 'Downtown' is a favourite of mine, Project MS (Scott Pruett and Mike Taylor).
