i dont know about the album, but i'm going to chime in and say that i
really love his record on surface. the second tune on the a-side really
does it for me in a aril brikha meets surface kind of way.

experts out there can tell me if his album 'old school pupil' is worth
picking up - and his other releases on fragmented ('closed account', 'seaside

Hrm... here in Cleveland I'd have to say Devo, they're the closest thing
to techno that's come from here and been influential (yeah, they're
actually from Akron, but it's close enough, mmm-kay?)

There were certainly other influential artists, such as Pere Ubu The
Dead Boys, but I don't think they had much impact on the techno scene. :)

Every City/Town has one, but which one do you think has had the most
influence on the scene we now love?

From Sheffield, it has to be Cabaret Voltaire, their BBQ's and Party's
influenced everyone here and for many it was the first time anyone had
heard Kraftwerk on a big rig - god bless Mal and Richard.

well, he was supposed to play tonite in chicago with oliver ho, and he
disappeared from the lineup. of course, that's not really confirmation,
and i have no idea why he isn't playing tonite. but its certainly
disappointing.

(and its not that oliver ho/blake baxter isn't pretty sweet, but i'm
having a hard time dragging myself back to vision. yuck.)

joris voorn - pretty boy plays techno. not my favorite, but ok

haha. i liked his set. some of it was a bit epic, but i was kind of
expecting that. but the song about halfway through with the really sweet
kick drum pattern and then the little vocal snip that came in(i know,
great description, but damn what great kicks) totally destroyed me. as far
as pretty boy goes...he totally made me want to grow my hair out the way
it was when i was 6. haha.

mathew jonson at the paxahau party was probably the best techno i heard
all weekend. way better than i expected, even though i was expecting a
good set. but the best thing i heard all weekend was the braid show at
saint andrews on sunday. and that was my third braid show in four days.

(313) movement vs brood x

2004-04-23 Thread eric trout

hey...does anyone know if the detroit area gets the broodx 17 year
cicadas? just thought of that...hundreds of thousands of techno fans
dancing with millions and millions of cicadas? haha. this might be the
best movement ever, regardless of the lineup.

although maybe detroit is far enough north that the ground won't heat up
enough by the festival to make them come out...?

i dont know...

(313) jeff mills in chicago

2004-03-29 Thread eric trout

wow. i don't know what else to say except that he totally tore it up.
great mixing, great tunes. i'd seen him twice before and been disappointed
both times, but had never really lost faith that someday i'd see him and
be amazed. just wanted to say that, especially after that whole thread
about jeff mills and chicago and all that, etc.

also, i'm pretty psyched about the oliver ho/mike dearborn/t-1000 night
coming up! never seen oliver ho before, so...

anyway,

Re: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?

2004-03-09 Thread eric trout

as far as techno, i'm pretty into the new Damon Wild doublepack on
Kanzleramt. especially mr mean and halflife. the combo of tough
stompy drums and totally wussed out synths is, in general, pretty
unbeatable, imo.

as far as rock music, i'd always have to go with Lungfish and the Lungfish
side-project The Pupils on Dischord. if you want to give them a shot, i
think i'd recommend starting with Lungfish's Sound in Time, completely
amazing start to finish.

not that i necessarily think you've never heard these records, but those
are the things i'm into right now.

also, i'd agree with Chad about Stars of the Lid. droning, largely guitar
based, i think, ambient. and the show they played in urbana last year was
one of the best i've seen. which i think is saying a lot, considering i'm
an impatient guy and it was an ambient show.
