You know, as much as I absolutely love Morgan Geist's music and respect him as an artist, I don't see him as a total victim in his anxiety stroll. A mutual friend of ours in Chicago told me about how he just wants to record music (not play shows) and how he's considering quitting music (same rant as the interview). Well, he says in his interview that Listening to music isn't an event anymore unless it's live. But he's not willing to play live. So, he thinks it's best for people to hear his music live (where they have to pay for the show!!) but he's not willing to give them that opportunity. The whole history of music up until the 20th century was based off of musicians playing for an audience. Only since the advent of recordings was selling a copy of a performance even and option. Ask any successful band or DJ and they will tell you that playing shows is the only viable option for supporting yourself off music right now. I don't think this is totally a bad thing. It should be an honor to play for people who enjoy your music (like Morgan says, he feels lucky that people pay attention to his music). Anyways, my point is Morgan Geist hasn't dropped a record in 11 years and doesn't want to play live- that's the root of his predicament. He has a great new record and *it's up to him* to make more music and play shows to get by financially. Or, as the original post said, take a break. He's a talented, blessed guy, I'm sorry to hear him sound so unhappy. The show ran late so I went over to Club RX (where yrs truly actually played a little at the tenth anniversary of the Mad techno weekly last Friday), but got there too late to hear John Tejada and Justin Maxwell's live set. On to the Gingerbread Warehouse -- this place is set up as an art-gallery-warehouse-speakeasy in the industrial area off Cesar Chavez. Tables, chairs, a bar with $3 setups and bring-your-own- brown-bag-baby, which sounds good but I have to say it was rather antiseptic, and the place was only half-full and not very much excitement. Delano Smith was playing when I arrived, pretty OK but not thrilling. Mike Clark started around 2:45 and I stayed until he finished at 4:30. The last 45 minutes were pretty darn good and he had at least a few of us out on the floor. I have to say, though, that alcohol has become the focal point of the dance music scene in SF to an unprecedented extent. Don't get me wrong, I like mine as much as anyone, but instead of contributing to party-hearty looseness it just has become a big distraction. So I hope Delano and Mike had a good time, and it was worth it being in SF this weekend with the 75 degree sunny weather no matter what, but I do wish there was more of a crowd ready for serious music action. I agree with everyone that says Sonar Barcelona is not worth the trip. Not only is the lineup lackluster and the city not at it's best at that time of year, but also Sonar doesn't take care of the majority of artists that play at the festival. According to a trusted Germany producer friend (who has been booked at Sonar), only the main acts like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills and a couple of really big English acts with strong management get paid to play. They pay very few of the German acts (Villalobos now probably) - they all have to pay their own flights, no wage and only receive a hotel room for one day! So, many of the artists that we would consider paying to see, never get paid themselves. How does that support the music subculture???
