Oh, he has an obsession for that? He should make a

yes he played that every time i have seen him too!

I don't know that many Detroit OLD SCHOOL CLASSICS
 (and I mean classics)
that the DJs pumped. What older
 Disco/R'n'B/Soul/Italo they played in the
 80's???

But what about Detroit? What were THE tracks Mills
 for example played
 everytime?

ok i'll give it a shot
i'm not from Detroit, and i certainly was not at
the Music Institute, but i heard a few tapes
from both MayMills's earlier years on the WJLB radio
station

May
first of all,the thing about may is that he used to
play A LOT of his own stuff,in fact 70% on the couple
of tapes i have heard, was his own!
some chicago stuff too
Phuture - pump up the bass,Lil Lois - Freq,Rosario - I
want u,ten city etc
some disco
i can only clearly remember Harry Thuman -
Underwater,but he did play
some more diva type disco too,i just could not
trainspot'em;)
German
Liason Dangerous -peut re pas(sp),avant apres
(obviously) Gotching(sp)-e1e2
new wave
visage - freq7
in general i find May style to be very similer to Ron
Hardy!(good long musicalmixing,with some crossfader
tricks in key)
i don't know that his radio apearences were consisted
of what he would play out
as he obviously would have wanted to showcase his
own stuff on radio.

Wizard

while i heard quiet a few Wizard tapes now, lets just
say that they can be very good or realy boring, all
depends on what you are after, usualy they consist of:
75% rap,hihop-electro
Mantronix,Whodini,Globe,Utfo,Imperial Bro,Wrekin
cr,Hashim,Eric b,Dynamix,RunDmc,Public Nme,Marley
marl,Beasties,Spooni g,Unkown dj,Kool moe d,Heavy d
Man Parish,Jj Fad,Bambata,TuffCrew,Egyptian lover,B
Boys,Aleem,LLCoolJ etc etc
5% funk
Paliament,Funkadelic,Princeshila E,Hancock did i say
Clinton:)
5% disco
Kano,Kurtis Blow,Rhythm Heritage,War,Sugerhill,,
2% pop
Micheal Jackson,SaltPeper,We Papa girls,MelKim,,
5%techno
No Ufo,Future,the Sound,body to the box,(mm i don't
think i heard any May at all tho)
13% house
Chip E,Chip e,Chip e(he must have realy loved
him, usualy there would be 3-4 tracks of his in every
k7),Hurley-JYB,Pierre,BnC-house aint,Hercules - 7
ways,Rosario - Amour PuertRico,adonis - no way,Bad Boy
-MixTell,Hitrax-cool J Acid
and other chicago stuff,as well as some uk(Pump Up The
Volume,Krush - House Arrest)New York (Raze - Jack The
Groove)
now all this is mixed on a four track(you would hear 3
tracks playing,or 2 and
a third being scratched quiet often)yet it's very
raw,usualy loses momentum after a while,beat is
changing constantly, i don't think he was on the same
class with the NY guys when it comes to scratching(if
you ever heard DST,or Marley Marl tapes you'd now what
i mean), the thing that i realy wanna know is: were
was
the industrial side of him,i have not heard anything
industrial on any of his tapes
yet some were around the time he made the Final Cut
stuff?

Ind-x was (is?) a Detroit-area based label run by
 Zach Roberts. I don't
think too much was ever put out on the label. I've
 got one record on IND-X
by the Electric Company, which Zach was a part of.

Here's the info on the record:

 FC3 Richards:

Djax-Up-163 Paul Johnson - Foreign Music

as far as i'm aware this was his first record, and to
me one of his very best, very detroit style sublime
techno,i don't think any of his other stuff sounds
like it(and i probably have around 15 or so)
re Chicago/Djax Mike Deaborn was the one who started
it suposedly,he sent Saskia some tapes, she knew his
other early stuff(MuziqueHousetime)and signed him
on the spot,he then introduced her to the other guys
then she's started licensing the old Warehouse/Muzique
stuff.

Tim Jackiw - 'Science of Sound' (Offworld).
One of those records that makes you wonder
 whether there is any justice
in the music industry at all. Because of bad
 distributors and record
shops, this record went virtually unnoticed when
 it was released in '97.

I know! THis record has not left my crate since I
 got it.
Sounds like it could have been released on UR,
 Metroplex, Fragile
or Transmat -- high praise indeed. That track No
 Destination
is the lost link between Acid Eiffel, World 2 World,
 JS-01 and
The Final Frontier. Just epic, long, and extremely
 moving track,
soulful and 808 percussion everywhere. Labels
 owners if you are
listening: pick up this record and re-release it!

that's kinda ironic, cos Offworld was a UK-based
 distributor which ran a
label of the same name... although to be fair i'm
 not sure if the Offworld
you mention is the same one or not.

as far as I know this is NOT the same Offworld! THe
 Offworld in
question is from Australia, and this was the only
 release I ever
saw on this label, I think it was a debut and then
 the label
folded? Jason Martin is connected somehow.

 cheers

yes it's Justin's old label
one of the best rekids to come out of Australia
in the 2nd half of the 90's(if not the best)
i think there was a repress about a year or so
ago,as i've seen a bunch lying around(no stickers
on them this time around)
There were a few more Offworld releases there but
the ones i've heard were more acid jazz then
techno,i think JM himself went that way,i'm pretty
sure he's heading down to the demf,so you can ask
him there

liddle townsell - the groove,
it's does not!
even Nude Photo has it's roots in
fingers - slam dance,chip e - it's house
other stuff like reese(play our music, bounce
your body, truth of self, grab the beat)
suberban knight(groove) or even Let's Go
were all direct coppycat of the chicago stuff.
it was mainly Juan(some of May stuff)that were
techno(and ofcourse later on Craig with Psych)
