RE: (313) A few words about A Guy Called Gerald
Another one to try to pick up if at all possible (especially 'headz') is of course '28 Gun Bad Boy' on this. http://www.discogs.com/release/84201 Yep, I know what you're thinking. And no, there's nothing cool about guns and having 28 of 'em wouldn't make it better. But I'd wager many here would desire that record after hearing that very track... I can understand that you don't like DNB, but how on earth could you see Gerald as another minimal producer?? I can't think of anything he's done that could be considered minimal, especially not recently. My comment doesn't refer to very recent material and perhaps what I really mean by the tag 'minimal' is bland and uninteresting, perhaps even soulless. I'll be more clear next time. robin...

I enjoyed his Detroit performances, actually -- consistent if a bit noodle-y at times. And the db version of Voodoo Ray was a real standout. Voodoo Ray has pretty good staying power. Just listen to the other so-called anthems of that time :) fh - robin wrote: On 4 Sep 2007, at 09:23, Wojtek wrote: ...are up now at http://infinitestatemachine.com Despite loving earlier Gerald records he lost me when he went in the direction of drum and bass and has never really regained the level he previously had. I missed the loft party unfortunately, but his set at The Works on friday before the fest was definitely better than the main stage one Mon. night. I think it's the flipside track--Blow Your House Down that's had more staying power. The bassline from BYHD was sampled by the 33 and 1/3 Queen for Nu Groove, and a recent remix is still being caned by the Wizard. It seemed like he didn't have a good feel for the main stage system. I kept seeing a Paxahau staff member gesturing to him to crank up the volume, but he ignored her and his drum and bass sounded tinny. People just weren't dancing. People just weren't dancing. :o) That was exactly the point I wrote about--the track that came on right after a 2 minute long sequence that sounded like some sci-fi machinary powering up had the most complex d'n'b rhythm I've heard to date; I wasn't quite sure whether Gerald dropped it just to get puzzled looks from the audience, make ppl lose it on the dancefloor if they got it, or both. I hear you about the tinny sound though--his pre-festival show at The Works that Friday night was a better experience overall--seems to have been a bit more d'n'b at that one as well. W.
