I'm with Ty. It's almost time for the DEMF Reality TV blowdown. Me and Theakston are setting up the bleachers again, selling tickets and opening the beer stand. First prize: dinner for two with (soon to be former) Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Assigned topic: Resolved, Carol Marvin should/should not be given the Festival back from Paxahau. Ah, I see the contestants are already lining up over there. You can tell by the Moby masks they are wearing to hide their true identities. Hang on kids . . . it's show time! fh - Ah well, I give up. Long time list member, enjoy reading, but I annually dread DEMF posts. So I'll just continue deleting. On Mar 25, 2008, at 9:28 PM, Thomas D. I can't say I've ever heard Benny Benassi play... but what I do remember is seeing the massive line outside of Bleu here in Detroit the night that he was booked. There was easily 400 people standing outside waiting to get in. That's very untypical of Detroit events. I mean, those numbers do happen, my event Dec 30th had over 450 people through the door, but I also had 3 rooms with 10 artists on the bill. More than 400 people for one Electronic Music Artist... thats really rare in this city... so as much as I cringed when I saw his name on the bill, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to put him on, cos he will draw a large crowd of Detroit (most likely) suburbanites. (313) Paxahau [was Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally]
On 4 deadlines so I'll try to keep this brief. Paxahau have technically been down since 1992/1993. the Jasons [Clark and Huvaere] have been promoting stuff in DOWNTOWN Detroit for as long as I can remember. I met them either the first or second time I was there... maybe it was Journey to the Hardcore II at Majestic, Dec 31 1992? [BFC live, Inner City live, Altern 8 live, Jeff Mills, Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes, Rob Hood and a few others. not a bad party]. Other promoters like Poor Boy [Dot, Jon Santos, Brian Gillespie], Voom [Steven Raume, Eric, etc], and Syst3m [Dean] were also instrumental in doing parties, but to be honest, almost all of these people were from nearby suburbs like Warren, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Troy, Hamtramck, etc. Paxahau were first really known as Richie's cult, kinda because they all were shaving their heads. I was too, but it was because I had hair down past my chin, I mistakenly tried to do dreadlocks my freshman year at OSU, it didn't work, so I shaved it. Thankfully it all grew back in mid 1995. They had a loft space at 1217 Woodward for a few years and it was the site of many a loft party - I played in late 1993 as a guest with D. Wynn and I'm honored to have had the induction / introduction to Detroit through them, by way of Brian Gillespie, Dot, Paris da Black Fu and Jon Santos.. They were also part of the +8 crew and helped do production for many of Richie's legendary Heaven Hell parties from 1993-1995. Then they started streaming shows from their ionized basement in Ferndale, and organizing events at Motor, Panacea, and the Masonic Temple. They are definitely bringing something to the table, whether you like it or not. They're historically speaking not representing the blackest side of Detroit, but they have respect for all of Detroit's flavors of talent, and they are a little more business-minded than some of the other promoters / festival organizers in the past. I think if they didn't step up to the plate last year, we might not have a festival this year. I trust that they will deliver a good show, regardless of what you think of all of the talent; there's still always something for everyone and at least, you don't have to clone yourself and try to see 4 stages at once; maybe you can sleep in, go visit the city, eat something, or have time to complain about it online here. +odd -- On Mar 26, 2008, at 12:16 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, that's just it isn't it - the suburbanites I've read Paxahau being described as the suburban promoters Can anyone give some history/background on Paxahau? Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
I had just been asking someone who works with them the same question the other day. We were at a bar, so forgive my hazy memory for specific details They've been formed officially as Paxahau for more than 11 years. Hoovar has had an influence in party promotions in Detroit since the early-mid 90s. Mid 90s is when the suburbanites started heading to Detroit in the 1,000's every weekend in order to party at the Raves. (The raves and those years are a part of Detroit history thats not often talked about on this 313 site or any of the overseas Detroit enthusiasts. The raves did have a massive influence on Detroit though, as literally 1,000s of people came to the city every weekend and raves were held in buildings that were otherwise unused, actually helping the building owners to make some income where there was none.) So, yeah, in business since the 97 or before, Hoovar worked with the Detroit party scene for 4+ years before that. I don't know anything about which parties he worked with or who or where. As I said, details are hazy, but I did get the understanding during the conversation that Hoovar has been involved with the city for longer than people have given him credit for previously. Suburbanites, although I don't get how people can live in the burbs, I do understand that when I lived in the burbs 10+ years ago, I still came to Detroit to spend my money, and many people in Detroit completely appreciates those suburbanites coming here to spend theirs now. well, the best of my hopes is that they were balancing responsibilities of how much booking costs are, who is available and willing, and if agents are requiring bundling. the best of my hopes is that they were constrained by business reality. maybe they just want to advance themselves in financial concerns and build relationships regardless of musical mission or core preferences, since people will keep coming to detroit. last year the festival itself was miserable in some of the regards of minimal bookings, while brilliant in the case of a few. I'm perfectly fine with all these demf lineups. there are exceptions, but by and large demf is the only chance detroiters get to see see and hear non-detroit electronic music. its nice to hear some different records, outside, with lots of nice people. funding the festival isn't a problem unless you want to fund a free festival comprised entirely of 313-favorite artists, and with the sound and organization that paxahau brought to the table. oh, and you want the lineup for next years festival announced by the middle of june. I blow 40 dollars on lunch sometimes, so I'm not going to complain about a 3 day, 40 dollar electronic music festival, even if there aren't 24-hour theo, kdj, etc stages. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org; Michael Kuszynski [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 7:20 PM Subject: Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally Thinking back to the troubled years of the fest - there was talk about the possibility of not holding it annually Sitting out a year or two to build the finances to do it right and still keep it free for everyone I think there was a lot of worth in that MEK /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 03/25/2008 06:15:56 PM: you might be right, but thats more on account of the festival not being free anymore. my comment about exposing new people to the music was based on conversations I've had with the organizers. of course they were more eloquent than I chose to be - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org; Michael Kuszynski [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 7:09 PM Subject: Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally new music lovers of all kinds interesting comment there since from what I've heard from everyone here is that the audience diversity has dwindled fewer families and kids, fewer people just passing by or just checking it out more ravers strange that at one time 313-list members were afraid Carol Marvin was going to take the festival into this sort of direction MEK /0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 03/25/2008 04:48:30 PM: since the festival became a business and it was recognized that the festival had to attract new music lovers of all kinds, not just hone in on pandering to the close minded 30-40-somethings on the hyperreal 313 list probably not the answer you wanted to hear, is it? - Original Message - From: Michael Kuszynski [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 4:52 PM Subject: Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally since when are trance and progressive djs booked for demf. I prefer that, in light of my tremendous stupidity, your correspondance with me remain in the monosyllabic realm. Additionally, there are several letters that I don't care for, which I insist that you discontinue using. Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
Some of these names we get on summer festivals here all the time - eg Benny Benassi, stealer of Carl's Grammy. ;) At first I thought this could be an April Fool's day joke with Moby mentioned. It's very populist but I can imagine it wouldn't attract Europeans or Aussies so much. I saw Joris here on the weekend. He's Jeff Mills 'breakthrough DJ'. It was very good but maybe lost momentum towards the end. Dubfire is ultra prog these days. Girls Talk is fun but unlikely to impress purists - he's more your Modular/Vice Records type cat. Cassy isn't that chick on Bad Boy misspelt, is it? The model Cassie? ;) Egyptian Lover is cool! Dubfire did that spastik remix, so he is 'looks' legitimate to trance people. Moby runs a place called teany on the lower east side of manhattan, a vegan / organic / boutique tea - sandwich shop with 20 different kinds of loose leaf teas. He also has started running a night at the Hiro Ballroom in Chelsea / Maritime Hotel (I believe that's the name). Hiro looks like a Japanese restaurant performance hall like the one in Kill Bill. The Hiro night's feature a combination of bottle service for the yuppie corporate party crowd and the art school / hipster / nyu electro - indie - hipsterclash music, a la justice / nu-rave / daft punk, etc. Looks like Moby is looking for some action. Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
Like Moby's new album - it's a commercial pop hacked up hairball terribly predictable if you are aware of what's in fashion except if you consider the track Every Day is 1989 in which Moby brings back the old rave piano progression and sounds like him trying to revive Feeling So Real He does this again on the tune The Stars except he adds a bit of the ol' Hoover - yeah, Hoover sounds I recall an article that came out around the time of Animal Rights where he was basically lambasting people like the Aphex Twin and lamenting the death of piano use in dance music and it was for this reason he quit the dance music scene (as Moby) man, Moby's album is pure rubbish (listening to it now) it's pure pop-trance/hi-nrg/rave nostalgia nonsense and you just know he's going to be playing this stuff because it's going to come out April 1st and every Moby fan is going to be wetting themselves MEK Thomas D. Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
hes a globally recognized, successful, and for whatever it's worth more-underground-than-many once-electronic then-pseudo-smart-pop musician and marketer. He is wealthy, successful, and runs a series of businesses. Last I heard, those are not characteristics that make women run for the hills. i'm disappointed that there's yet another year, and no theorem. furthermore, one of these days i'm going to throw a delsin party in detroit.
Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally
Benny Benassi... i never saw him spinning. But my hopes are not high, once i've already heard his tunes around the city and in the clubs. He is one of the DJs always booked for mega rich boy/college/high school events here in Brazil as the number one of the world. Well... there was a lot of number ones playing in this kind of parties here. Tiesto... Paul Van Dik. You name it. A lot of people in number one position at the same time. When things get too absurd, they say that this john doe is the number two... (!!!).
