(313) Slum Village & Herbert / The D Sound?

I'd say that a Detroit style of hip hop has been around for a minute, not necessarily mainstream though. Tainted by SV has probably made the biggest splash on the airwaves, out of the stuff I'd say is D flavored. De La Soul's Stakes Is High (produced by Jay Dee) enjoyed a tiny bit of radio play. D flavor you ask?... Jazzy. Funky. Analog. Pretty Minimal. Not a lot of reverb & what not. Plump, abbreviated kick drums. Exaggerated snares & claps sharp enough to take your head off. Washy, filtered samples. Rhodes, lots of Rhodes. Large & lively staccato basslines. Swinging, free flowing scat-like vocals. Basically picking up where A Tribe Called Quest left off. I think of Dabrye, Dwele, Wajeed, Lacksadaisycal, Jay, Subterraneous, SV, my buddies greenSKY & Jazz, :brownstudy (yours truly!), and a some others I can't think of for some annoying reason (sleep deprivation perhaps?). There's a couple of other Detroit hip hop flavours running around, but they aren't as pervasive within the community - and in my opinion they suck. The aforementioned brand of head is open to some of the more adventurous "techno" stuff (akin to their own aesthetic) - i.e., Herbert, Domu, Bjork, Sutekh, blah, blah, blah... I must admit that you're less like likely to find a head into more traditional techno fare like, ummm, something from the Belleville three or UR maybe. Okay, I really should got to sleep now. Boom bip!>>> JPH.
Re: (313) Slum Village
Trinity isn't actually a greatest hits. Most of it is new. The "Greatest" SV stuff has to include J-Dilla. :) Its a decent record. They should have left "Fall in Love" alone, it was fine the way it was. The other record called "Dirty District" is full of unreleased SV material as well as various collaborations. I think this one is actually better than "Trinity." Just my 2 pennies.
