Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..
ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK used the 303 with squiggle oncan't remember the track name, came out as a bootleg as 'love robot'. that is early 80s, and should be included in any histroy of 303 use. the swah pixies, an australian outfit that was part of the severed heads/sydney industrial scene, used one in 82. i can't remember if they released any recordings with the 303 on it. if so, it would have been released on m squared. is ian andrews still on the list? he should know if anybody in sydney in those days released 303 tracks. my 303+606 noodlings from the mid 80s are on a four track real to real in the cupboard somehwere. james = Re: Who discovered the 'Acid House' squiggle on the TB303? I always thought it was Spanky and Pierre but nope, it was a UK band called Section 25 on Factory Records (New Order,Joy Division,Happy Mondays etc). They were one of the first people in the UK to buy one (the TB 303 was only available to buy between 1982 and 1983 - only 20,000 were made!). Anyway - just before Section 25 went on a major North American tour they purchased a 303, did a bit of 'tweaking', found the squiggle and incorporated it into their live set - specifically 'Looking from a Hilltop' (one of Derrick May and Juan Atkins all time favourite tracks, and a massive Paradise Garage and Warehouse favourite) and 'Beating Heart' which had an extended remix made using the 303 in 1983! Section 25 toured the States extensively between 1983 and 1985 specifically Chicago, Detroit and New York showcasing this new sound and tracks from these dates can be heard on their 'Deus Ex Machina' live CD. The version of 'Hilltop' sounds totally Acid House - they're using an 808, 303 and a Juno 106 which became a standard Acid set-up by the Chicago crew. So this story about the 'squiggle' being discovered in Pierre/Spank's bedroom is totally blown out of the water! For more details go to www.section25.com and check out their biography - specifically 18. 'Second US Tour' - and their live kit list.

Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..
I was under the impression that Alexander Robotnicks Problemes D'Amour was the first official music release utilizing the 303. Granted its a subdued 303 more along the lines of Adonis' No Way Back rather than Pierre's Acid Tracks ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK used the 303 with squiggle oncan't remember the track name, came out as a bootleg as 'love robot'. that is early 80s, and should be included in any histroy of 303 use. the swah pixies, an australian outfit that was part of the severed heads/sydney industrial scene, used one in 82. i can't remember if they released any recordings with the 303 on it. if so, it would have been released on m squared. is ian andrews still on the list? he should know if anybody in sydney in those days released 303 tracks. my 303+606 noodlings from the mid 80s are on a four track real to real in the cupboard somehwere. james = Re: Who discovered the 'Acid House' squiggle on the TB303? Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..
soo, when we figure out who was the first to use a 303, then what? I know *I* will finally be able to sleep.
RE: (313) Who used the 303 first..
I thought the first to use a 303 was an engineer at Roland. Who was the rirst to use a TB3030? Probably Tony Allgood. And then the question after that was, what does this mean to society at large? That's 'Problems d'amour' remixed 2 years ago by Carl Craig as Desginer Muisc and he called it 'Problems' I hear that he going to remix Shari Vari next year... Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..
isn't it possible that it was discovered independently by several different people? Marshall Jefferson has told the story of finding and liking the classic 303 sound before he knew anyone else was doing the same thing. I personally like the notion that no human can claim credit for the noise, but that, as a self-aware machine entity, the 303 deliberately set out to propagate itself like a virus throughout the musical spheres of biological life forms... | -Original Message- | From: Data General [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] | Sent: 27 November 2002 15:17 | To: Toby Frith | Cc: 313 | Subject: Re: (313) Who used the 303 first.. | | | isn't it possible that it was discovered independently by several | different people? Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..
Quando Quango's Love Tempo (also on Factory) also uses the 303 in a acid housey way. but i wouldn't consider it acid.
