Re: (313) m u s i c

2003-07-30 Thread J. T.

i recently got ahold of 24 records, new and old stuff, no particular order

pt1.

d'malicious - dark tradition (wave music)
3 tracks of pretty nice sorta aril b. sounding stuff. 'dark tradition' has
slightly more clubby beats than aril, but some nice strings and portamento
melodies. 'soft machine' has lovely pads and a nice big square wave
bassline, congas, housey chords -- comes off a bit like joshua's stuff
actually (especially that bassline!), a bit more techno. 'dark transition'
takes the lovely portamento melodies from 'dark tradition', adds deeper
strings and pads, sounds a bit towards los hermanos/ur..so kinda familiar
sounding stuff all around but real nicely done.

maps @ diagrams / tim jackiw - glaciarc ep (tundra)
beautiful, deep, cool, moody stuff that i would put up there with the recent
alex cortex stuff on ann aimee, cim, etc. loads of lovely strings pads,
excellent soft abstract beats, and subtle melodies (none of those idm
musicbox melodies that bug me tho). the maps diagrams side is on the
dp fuzzy paddy/stringy idm side, all very lovely. tim jackiw starts off
with a sorta droney but lovely 4/floor track that actually reminds a bit of
stereolab with its nice subbass-line -- lovely strings and chords and pads
washing around in the background, it's awesome. after a skittery-beated but
still deep track, tim closes with a lovely more abstract one that goes a bit
in the d.e.c. direction..beautiful record.

v/a - headspace 2003 sampler
great techno all around. i was prepared to be hard on fabrice's track, he
was starting to use too much similar 101 lines in his tracks i thought
(sorry fabrice!), and while this one does again have that familiar 101 style
he uses, it's used in a fresh context, and at fabrice's best -- is one of
the more standout tracks i have by him -- loads of tension and a bit dark,
nice icy-pads underlying the track. derek carr's track is nice mellow techno
with nice deep droning bassline, nice little minimal touches, very warm and
simple. rei loci's is full of churning high-pitched ur-y melodies, nice
chords, simple but nice chunky bassline..very good energetic detroit-y
techno. but arne takes the cake! like rob hood doing (extra) dark
sophisticated melodic stuff? i dont know, is just arne and its excellent,
full of alien sounds, lovely strings, smartly-written percussion parts,
tension, is just techno...

rei loci - faction (seventh sign)
more great melodic detroit techno from one of the iridite guys..'faction' is
full of melodic tones flying all over the place, bass and melodies
intertwined, more little melodies coming in and out, little chord string
stabs, buzzy percussion, sort of like a more melodic and busy rob hood? it
works nice @ 33rpm too, sounding a bit like hoodlum stuff but more
wild-techno style ;P 'no neutral surface' is more stripped down and banging
style, staccato melodies, some hood-y chords, string stabs, but this doesnt
just start and loop, it mutates wildly several times..excellent! lacuna is a
bit more abstract than the other two, some parts arent quite as likable, but
then its also got parts which are some of the loveliest and catchiest on the
record, a more housey bassline and lovely high pitched chords and
melodies..excellent record all around, technOO!!

tres demented (planet e)
ok i see where one of my friends was coming from saying 'demented' is like
old farley and chi stuff, but hey not realllyy!! that drum loop and that
single note dancing morse-code style is all cc, and that big single-osc bass
note with changing decay, the way the track bulds...paperclip people getting
really dark and worked up if you ask me! dope!! and the dd version is all
deep classic cc detroit style, if minimal -- its the pads that make it..they
remind me of televised green smoke but thats ok hah ;)..nice shortloops of
computery beepboops and very nice 808 percussion. the drum tracks are nice
minimal cuts, one to the chi side one more to the detroit side..great
record, dont think it's necessarily _the_ record of the year or anything
arne, but one of!

rod modell - deep chord #16
not a whole lot to say, nice dubby stuff that reminds a bit of maurizio -- i
like it a lot BUT the problem is this stuff has no bass! just straight ahead
909 kicks. so instead of being dubby grooves that really grab you they just
kinda drift along. still, very lovely echoing dubby stuff..its just a shame,
one or two bassnotes added to each song would have made a world of
difference..i have noticed this lacking in other dc stuff as well..i still
am glad i picked it up tho, and will be nice to mix with..

d.i.e. - the men you'll never see pt.2 (clone)
the guys formerly of d-bass and m.a.p. now dropping the techno-bass on
clone...unstoppable...i wish the best track wasn't a live @ the m.a.p.
lounge, ie p-dogg keeps cutting the beat out and talks over most of the
track..i think the original is on another m.a.p. record?

Re: (313) m u s i c

2003-07-30 Thread J. T.

pt2.

isolee - cant sleep all night (playhouse)
title cut seems like isolee doing his take on metro area sorta i guess,
still got his kinda abstract isolee touches, some strange effects and
sounds..kinda cool vox, processed various ways..nice bassline tho (this is
where i hear the ma influence). overall a little too...something. weird for
the sake of weird at times. but still good. 'today' is a surprise, with
lotsa guitar (from fuzzy to acoustic), nicely sung longing vox
galax...with a slow housey beat and some fuzzy synth..it reminds me a
lot of a modern produced velvet underground actually! i like it. 'lost' is
more isolee with a slight metro area influence, but more of a house kinda
groove than 'cant sleep..'...its pretty good. quality record but somehow i'm
not totally convinced by this m.a./smooth disco influenced stuff -- a little
bit flat somehow.

iz diz - unnnhhh (classic)
highhh quality house! 'love me right' is full of the catchy little jazz
riffs like izdiz are known for, great creeping funk bassline, great keys on
top, nice playing with structure...just top quality house. some muted vox
samples from prince in there too but not at all overdone, very
sparse..smooth. 'unnnhhh' is more of a chunky house groove compared to the
other side, wicked chunky intricate dx (i think?) bassline, prescription-y
beats (how many times can i use that as adjective? a couple more, you'll
see!!), more regular use of prince vox samples than the other side, a couple
string samples, some nice keys low in the mix...this track is all about that
bassline..very joshua..prince song sampled is sheila btw (i think)

joshua - hustlin' (select)
pretty different record for joshua imo! '4 her' is more jackin' than usual,
lotsa short little beeps and choppy vocal samples, real tight little chord
stabs, little bits coming and going, very simple bassline, some occasional
indiscernible vocoder, but some beautiful shimmery chords over the top of it
all too..great beats. almost too busy, a little more west coast sounding
than usual maybe, but still nice. 'hustlin' is noisy! full of beeps and loud
clavs and cowbell, crashin beats, some kinda goofy whoowho samples,
some hustlin' samples...pretty nice bleepy bassline, and simple deep
organny chords but maybe too crowded this time...noisy! but funky too and
cool to hear joshua doing something kinda different..

kaizer n.d.atl - dirty south dirt (late nite essentials)
o man this is nice -- title track has real natural live organic
house-but-slightly-broken beats (dope congas and sticks and some well placed
extra kicks), beautiful theo p. kinda chords and understated lovely
melody...simple subbassline..there's another mix called the String version
but afai-hear it doesnt have strings haha and is awful similar. emerging
from under is more familiar sounding, more of a familiar beat, but not in a
bad way at all, overall kinda reminds me of brett dancer..pretty raw, with
long organ pads and nice keys that arent all polished and jazz-dowg, more
improvised and raw sounding, simple but nice bassline that sounds a lot like
a jazz/standup bass...it doesnt do a lot, but the bass is nice and the raw
organ grows on you..very nice record from the atl!

kemit sources - an ka sein/pas an tombe (ismaa)
from 2002...absolutely beautiful stuff. great warm beats full of interesting
percussion covered with lovely chords (sounds like
rhodes..)...french-african vox...perfect summer music...to be played
alongside cesaria and into kdj/theo..i wanted the k.s. with i-cube remix but
it was out of stock and this was in for $4. anyways this is so lovely and
great. perfect.

moodymann - silence in the secret garden (single) (peacefrog)
probably needs no review, i'm late, anyways ok the title track is one of my
favorites from the album, but then trak eighteen which isn't on the album
is easily one of my latest favorites from kdj too, more slightly techno
tasting house, creeping organny bassline and dark strings, little high
pitched nuances to the bassline, great sound design..almost has a circussy
feel know what i mean haha but just enough to come off as kinda playful and
dark...emotional content (92 cassette) is aight, starts off like its gonna
be a storming song but doesnt do much after the first few measures except
repeat itself, kinda a goofy pitched up sample but i dig it, but its a
little overused..big hard 909 kicks...probably nice in a mix but not the kdj
that works at home like so much of his more recent stuff..

mute - direct cuts (running back)
beautiful house stuff from germany, this stuff isprescription-y!! really
tho, these guys must be really into ron trent...lots of piano chords that
sound straight up like r.t.! ocha has a great r.t. style chord groove,
simple deep bassline, eventually some verrry lovely higher chords get added,
ohhh...towards the end these sorta acid-y notes get added and a bit of
sparse-n-lowinthemix sax,

a few things that float my boat at the mo:

Andres - Salvador de bahia - mahogani

Four blinding tracks on this. The salvador de bahia side has two mixes
which are both goodslow detroit house with a kind of early techno
synth line (think juan's the chase) to spice it up. i've been annoying
the neighbours with this all weekend...the other side has another house
track that sounds like KDJ/rick wade at their best and then another track
with what sounds like the sample from one of the purposemakers (in the
bush?) running through ittotal class

Natural Aspirations - Sound Signature 18

Theo's latest, go to the 'friendly children' side for a brilliant african
chanting style house cut, along the lines of 'sawala' on ss10 but more
housed upthe track is long but progresses nicely all the way
throughbrill bassline comes in 1/3 the way through can't wait to hear
this on a big system.

other stuff:

busta rhymes - danger/rub - muck

cheeky boot broken/beaty thing with nice analogue bassline and busta doing
his thang on the top...there's a dub too if you don't need the mc.

only child ft amp fiddler

the sound of the summer for me...i banged on about this earlier on this
week but boy do i like the vocal on that...

fix my chic - tapehead

again a bootythree tracks. fix my sink/good timescoulda done this
better (more of the bassline needed), washing machine/riton 'take control'
which is wicked but the highlight for me is MAWs work over the hawtin mix
of le funk mob (if anyone can fix me up with the original le funk mob 2x10
then shout)brilliant

block 16 - balihu14

the original lp mix does it for meagain posted earlier on this week
about this

Dan Curtin Distort.Archive.Desire (downlow)
I haven't bought a Dan Curtin record since his album on Sublime and this is
a real return to form. That frenetic, but funky as you like drum
programming, weird jazzy melodies, gorgeous warm basslines. It's just ace,
ace, ace.

KIM Flores Monstrosi (Tigersushi)
There's a handy Psychic TV track on the flip but it's the KIM track for me.
I'm guessing it's a Krautrock thing - I recognise the Ghormengast studio,
maybe Conny Plank's? - but it wouldn't be out of place on old Plastikman
b-side, stripped down to just a beat, a bassline and eerie reverb.

Krikor Pas De Norm (Karat)
Like Akufen but less frantic, and more of a natural groove to me. Anthony
Shakir's been playing it a lot and it was a highlight for me when I heard
him. Static-ey hi hats, stolen strings and a vocoded voice saying bass.
What more do you want?

Plus I scored copies of Ultradyne's E-Coli and ...Is Evil releases.

2003-07-29 Thread alex . bond

reasons to be cheerful.

in no order...

1) Sound Signature 018. My towerblock is shaking to this.
2) K.Tatham Dego - You got me puzzled. I know, a little old, but one of
the finest moments of UK techno in years.
3) Dan Curtain on Downlow - my copy came! and its as good as you all said!
4) Jon Slocum on mout. Dunno who this is, but the B-side is on it.
5 ) MOS001 - Hm, more quality dutch business
6) Iridite records - dope uk s**t. in general.
7) That Frictional thing w/ pink label. Shake's side though
8) a few cheeky bits on my hard drive. You'll have to wait.
9) Andres on Mahogani
10) New Alfie LP (sept. release)

sorry to be a bit boring, but I haven't come across anything obscure in a
while

a few things that float my boat at the mo:

Andres - Salvador de bahia - mahogani

Four blinding tracks on this. The salvador de bahia side has two mixes which
are both goodslow detroit house with a kind of early techno synth line
(think juan's the chase) to spice it up. i've been annoying the neighbours
with this all weekend...the other side has another house track that sounds
like KDJ/rick wade at their best and then another track with what sounds
like the sample from one of the purposemakers (in the
 bush?) running through ittotal class

Natural Aspirations - Sound Signature 18

Theo's latest, go to the 'friendly children' side for a brilliant african
chanting style house cut, along the lines of 'sawala' on ss10 but more
housed upthe track is long but progresses nicely all the way

his thang on the top...there's a dub too if you don't need the mc.

PG I picked this up last night @ sonic groove, f*ing wicked, it's the first
track on a mix I made last night.

Haven't bought anything since the beginning of June other than the new Pepe,
Tres Demented, and I finally found Ten Days of Blue on Vinyl, but here's my
current top 10:

1. DJ Gregory - Attend 1 - Kitsune (yeah, I know I'm late on this one, but
come on!)
2. Pal Joey - Thong Test - Loop d' Loop Records (actually prefer the B side)
3. Moodymann - Silence in the Secret Garden - Peacefrog
4. Tread - Tread 3 - Third Ear
5. Amp Fiddler - Love and War EP - Genuine/PIAS Recordings
6. Rima - This World - Jazzanova-Compost Records
7. Oxtongue - Delight - Kompakt Pop
8. Reunion - Strange Attention (Seiji Remix) - Sonar Kollektiv
9. Tres Demented - Tres Demented - Planet E
10. Jay Dee - Unreleased Volume 1 - The Bling 47 Group

Oh and Wire to Wire is very nice. The new Ghostly comp has its moments too.
And I love that Madlib version of Donald Byrd on Blue Note. Haven't heard
the album yet though. I really need to buy some new records... :/

i'm really digging on the teo moritz LP, avenue. it's off of the superhuit
label[france]. wonderfully produced deep house and downtempo. think of
moodymann's more floor-friendly trax.

cheers,
