RE: (313) ride from ny to detroit?

2008-05-19 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Thankfully, no law enforcement-related people will see this on-list
conversation, so they won't be alerted to look out for people pushing
the limit a bit to get to the festival next weekend ... (will they?)

:)

Sheez...I have driven at high rates of speed through
PA numerous times. It is the Ohio turnpike cops you
need to look out for. It gets even worse if you have
Michigan plates driving through there.

to be clear, my dear listees, while i appreciate the suggestions, i am
decidedly not looking for:
1) recommendations that i take a plane (i can't afford a ticket)
2) driving tips, or diatribes about state police
3) directions/suggested routes

what i AM in fact looking for is:
1) somebody within public transportation vicinity near new york city
with a car who likely already has their trip planned
2) who is driving to detroit for the festival
3) who has room for one friendly passenger

Michigan cops are no joke either and are all too happy to hold on to your
license until your ticket is paid. All state troopers are 'notorious'
mutherf*ckers really...if they pull you over.

But on Rt 80 in PA they're much more lenient in terms of what speed they'll
pull you forand they're VERY predictable in terms of how they operate.
Ohio cops have this odd knack for appearing out of thin air.

I'm not advocating putting your foot to the floor and just barreling on
through, you need to pay close attention and trust your instincts. Ease
off for entrance ramps, turn arounds, when coming over crests or around
blind corners, and when approaching other likely hiding spots -then pick up
your speed when you're more sure of your surroundings. Speeding is an art.

Ohhh and don't underestimate the massive role luck plays in all this - if
you ain't feeling it, don't push it;-)

Believe it or not I know of what I speak. I spent the last four years
logging 2000+ miles a week throughout the NE and I have 0 points on my
license in any state.

Uhhh... I think Todd's got it backwards. It's more like 8 - 10 hours
through the US and 10 - 12 through Canada.

But, if you don't drive like Todd's Grandma, you can make it much faster.
The drive (taking Route 80 through PA and OH and then 75 into Detroit) has
never taken me more than 9 hours. For the record my personal best is 7
hours in Corvette Z06 leaving midtown Manhattan at 10PM and checking into
the Athenium at 5AMcould have have made it even faster if I hadn't
stopped for a sit down dinner near the water gap.

The Canadian route is too unpredictable given the two border crossings.
Stick to 80.

My only advice is do not go more than 10 over the limit in OHeveryone
seems to get a ticket in OH.

Happy travels

The drive is about 12 hrs through the US, 9-10 hrs through US / Canada.

I would recommend flying if you can.
