Maarten,

The 2nd track on the 2nd stream shares some simalarites with one of the
versions of the Prescription release. However, you really need to hear the
stripped down tracky one which is all bass, guitar and drums. It's
disgusting! This 2nd one on the 2nd stream is a lot like the version which
was also included on the 'Foot Therapy EP'
http://www.discogs.com/release/16090 but all of the versions were released
as http://www.discogs.com/release/37972

You will want these, and hopefully this will inspire a spotter such as
yourself to complete your Prescription collection. These records must wind
up in the right hands - those that will treasure (and play) them!

RE: (313) ugly edit 4 / downlow party

2003-03-14 Thread J. T.

PS - yo let's have some 313 report on the downLow party though! :)

ahhh sorry me and minto have been too tired/busy to say much..and dunno
where to begin..and we're biasedand i'm kinda flipping out in dallas
anyways haha..

the party was very very nice...
it was at hole-in-the-wall club (The Red Blood Club) in downtown Dallas,
which was actually a very nice space...nice wide dancefloor and stage inside
(which was decorated with posters of classic detroit & chicago record
labels/coversm, and dL artwork), and a patio and balcony area outside..

it began early in the evening with anomaly playing nice deep electro and
techno like o.p.p. on the patio (mixing off laptop), and dj revolv inside
playing deep techno...these guys arent exactly from dL, they're from
"anomaly" but that's pretty much family...

minto went on next inside and played house..deep burnt, the new soul on wax,
maw #1, more russ g., dbx, poff4, maurizio, nebraska...pretty nice mixing
toe! especially considering no practice in months, and a freestyle set..

f.b.k. from 21/22 played hard techno outside on the patio while minto played
inside. dL isn't exactly enthusiastic about hard techno but he played some
decent stuff, and when i was out there people were into it...he played dL001
over soemthing that soudned like blacknation which was funny but it sounded
kinda cool..haha..he was down here to help shake out..

after f.b.k. on the patio, plastic sleeves played a short live set composed
in the past few days after his house flooded...on a moog and an eps, and a
few other bits..he had a flightsuit on and a silver mask, and made his
movements mechanical, which was really fun to watch...the music was also
very very good, dark and evil and in the area of recent ultradyne
stuff...dope!

after plastic sleeves, convextion played a short live set on the patio (his
first!) also composed in just a week..on a jd-800, mc-50, and with some
backup froma computer..played with his back to the crowd ;) instead of the
dubby stuff he's known for he played more of a deep techno towards electro
set..but still sounding very convextion, extremely deep and with those
stringsthere was some mysterious buzz coming out the speakers but we
just ignored it, wasnt too bad, and gus could work with it anyways, kinda
fit his sound ;P

during this time ricky simpson played a great set of classics
inside...starman soundtrack into kaotic harmony into no ufo's into good
life...boo & glen on cajual, new and old convextion, plastic sleeves and
drexciya...ricky is a badass (no understatement!), he takes chances does
long mixes and jerks the pitch around like only the best can...and he wore a
wifebeater, total dL style haha!

after ending things on the patio, a local talent, maetrik, played a live
laptop set inside of dubby techno...pretty nice stuff, especially a couple
in particular which stood out from the buckets of this stuff there is out
there..not affiliated with dL but glad to have him there and he did a nice
job!

after maetrik came shake...playing everything from "cheesey" 80's disco (on
minto's request :P), talking heads, his own stuff, jack tracks, radiohead
(!), the new record on a very good new local label, mvm, and of course loads
of stuff which we have no idea what it was but it was dope. he says he had
an off night, ok some mistakes/looseness, but not that many overall pretty
tight and fun and just so much good music...the crowd was feeling it...and
shake was singing and talking to the crowd the whole time. after playing
stayed on stage and spent an hour talking and joking around with the
remaining audience...

all in all...there just arent many parties like that. the feeling and "vibe"
and relaxed atmosphere was unforgettable, pretty unbeatable. dunno if we'll
be doing another one soon as unfortunately we lost a good chunk but we aint
mad it was pretty worth it. 80-90% of the 150+ people there were true HEADZ,
half of which have been in the scene here for a decade, have run labels,
released records...pretty special group of people...we had hoped for a
bigger turnout but those who came were really the "best of the best" haha.
shake layed on the compliments which meant a lot to all involved.

had a really great weekend cruising around with shake and kevin, eating too
much bbq, listening to stupid records, getting lost looking for redneck
restaurants...beautiful time. so many incredible and hilarious stories and
lots of food for thought i'm still chewin on.

the end.

have a bunch of video to put online, dunno how much it will be edited down
to...but i'll post a link when its up.

did i leave anything out toe? i'm gonna go wipe boogers on your pillows :P

In the beginning of the record is the sample of the dells, but this is not
recorded on these sound files.

Oh, and one last "tone arm setting question" (i am sorry, but I keep getting
some distortion...):
On the package of my needle there is an instruction "tracking angle 20
degrees", does this mean that I need to set the height of the tone arm so
that the arm comes in from a 20 degree angle on the record?

Well the Ugly Edit is much more like the original (if that's the one in the Ron
Hardy mix I heard) and is probably 15-20 years older than the Chuggles remake
obviously so doesn't have that trademark Ron and Chez deep electronics
underneath it, house music 'beats' and additional prescription trademark
production (so to speak). The original has an electric guitar solo and now I
can't remember if that made it into Theo's Re-Edit or not. In the Ugly Edit
There's no housey kickdrum or those high cool filtered cymbal and clap sounds.
It sounds more like an old Dells track than a new house track, which I
personally think is appropriate.

In short one is not a substitute for the other, the Chuggles sounds like a 90's
house track with a Dells sample.. there's less of the Dells in it and more of
Ron and Chez. Whereas Theo's edit sounds a lot more like the original to me,
there's less (if any) "additional production" in it, so to speak. (that I can
tell anyway, maybe it's quantized better? ha ha).

I too have ground down my copy of "I remember dance" over the years... I play
the version with the really long intro of highs/snaps where the kick doesn't
come in for like 3 minutes or something, you can mix it in for ages, then when
the kick finally drops in it's massive.

I've not ever heard of this Kid Dynamite thing that others mentioned... so
sorry can't comment on that.

Hope that helps,
Matt MacQueen

It is always so weird to hear the originals from whence your samples spring.
The Chuggles 'I Remember Dance' really did a great job of staying faithful
to the original and providing some nice variants to it through all of the
different versions. I've almost destroyed the grooves in the trackiest
version.

How does the UGE4 treatment compare? This was one of the first Chicago house
records to ever find its way into my heart, so I hope UGE4 gives it a nice
treatment. If not, I'll be caning Chuggles and Remembering Dance all summer.

I've heard ugly edits 04, a 2-tracker. Don't know the tracks by name but I
think the one (if it's by the Dells ?) I've heard the original in Ron Hardy
mixes on DeepHousePage.

It's a wicked track and was also sampled by Chuggles for "I Remember Dance"
release on Prescription. I've always wondered who it was... never even knew it
was the Dells?? Makes sense though, one of those guys was helping on SalSoul

Here it is in the Ron Hardy Mix (Live @ C.O.D's, Chicago) part B
http://deephousepage.com/ronhardycodsb.ram
the track starts about 11:45

I'm personally not as hot on the flip side, which is maybe the Ripperton cut?
but I just tripped a needle across it in a hurry though, and was already jacked
up about the other side.

Also whites are circulating of the new Sound Signature #17... cool and deep as
you might expect. Sorry no artist or track titles, I just assumed it is Theo
though? Like SS-16, a good number of white labels will probably be in
circulation for awhile before the label releases drop. Do check it out.

peace,
Matt MacQueen
