I think I have still seen the Psycho Kong release in my local.

Also, are you sure he hasn't released another one on D-Jax in the last year
or did I just imagine it.

'Music in Me' (relief) is still my fave.

It seems like some of the other rare Djax Records are
like fuggeddaboudit, though. If you missed 'em, you missed 'em.

Check used bins in *every* record shop that has them. You never know what

Re: [313] DJAX/Paul Johnson

2001-05-10 Thread Richard Hester
Paul Johnson has a couple of things out on Djax, the Psycho Kong is
one, I believe Foreign Music is another (I think this one has the
original Donkey Kong track). I think he is also represented on the
Warehouse remix 2X12. All these releases represent the tracky side of
Paul Johnson, rather than the Get Get Down side. Thank God.

If you really yearn to know more about these and other releases on Djax,
the Sonic Grooves web site used to have the whole Djax catalog in their
database, and you could also go to djax.nl. For a while, Djax was one of
the few places where an aspiring (or established) Chicago artist could
get published and paid.

Yes, it's a real record, not a scam:)
He actually did a few records for Djax:

Djax-Up-163 Paul Johnson - Foreign Music
Djax-Up-181 P. Johnson Armando - 3rd Dimension
Djax-Up-200 Paul Johnson - Psycho Kong (2x12)

-Haven't got the first one, Foreign music, but the double he did with
Armando and Psycho Kong kick ass. Psycho Kong ('94) is of course based on
the arcade game, using those Blip Blop-sounds that we all loved.

Knowing Paul's musical history I bet it's safe to say Foreign music is good.
And I'm sure it should be VERY good considering the release year ('93),
around the time when all the Chicago guys did excellent stuff. IMO better
than nowadays...

You should also seek Glenn Underground's recs on Djax, if you already
haven't got them. They're SO F**KING GOOD it hurts!!

Djax-Up-162 Glenn Underground - Future Shock
Djax-Up-194 Glenn Underground - The Unborn (green 12)

-these are still the same style he started with, Chicago deepness in the
ORIGINAL style, similar to his E.P. on Chicago underground for example.
The Unborn has the legendary track 101 Dolmations that IMO is one of the
undisputed Chicago track classics. SO funky and genius track that I can't
believe it!!!

I've contributed some Djax releases to this site, check it out:

Yea, Psycho Kong's the sh*t! It was re-released a year or so ago, so it may not
be that hard to get. It seems like some of the other rare Djax Records are
like fuggeddaboudit, though. If you missed 'em, you missed 'em.

True, but are those guys really doing that much of ANYTHING nowadays? It just
seems like Chicago fell off the map a little lately. Which is sad, cause that
was the (other) mecca. I heard the party scene really dried up there since the
cops started cracking down with the expensive permits and stiff penalties and
stuff. I think maybe that has something to do with it? Chicago used to have
CRAZY off-the-wall loft parties and sh*t.

Chi-town peops, fill me in...

(I know this is a 313 list, not a 312 list, so SUE ME!)

Oh dude, my nickname is dusty fingers. But, unfortunately, the same is true
for alot of people these days. And people know the good records. Especially in
NY. I don't care what anyone says, vinyl is still huge and it ain't going
nowhere. But let's not open that can of worms (vinyl vs. digital, vs. mp3, vs.
CD, etc, etc... ad nauseum).

Djax-Up-163 Paul Johnson - Foreign Music

as far as i'm aware this was his first record, and to
me one of his very best, very detroit style sublime
techno,i don't think any of his other stuff sounds
like it(and i probably have around 15 or so)
re Chicago/Djax Mike Deaborn was the one who started
it suposedly,he sent Saskia some tapes, she knew his
other early stuff(MuziqueHousetime)and signed him
on the spot,he then introduced her to the other guys
then she's started licensing the old Warehouse/Muzique
stuff.
