Ahh...Mr. MacKenzie - dog breeder extraordinare. A pity he had to go the way
he did. Magnificent voice - especially well demonstrated in the Associates
mk1 (with Alan Rankine). Billy also turns up howling in one of Holger
Hiller's early solo efforts (off of Oben Im Eck) and guess who is playing
assorted percussion instruments...? None other than Mr. Oswald. That would
have been in the early/mid 80s. I *thought* he had some involvement in
Palais Schaumberg (the band Holger started with Thomas Fehlmann) which
spuutered out in the mid-80s, but I can't prove it. Seems like Andreas Dorau
hailed from there as well. BTW the stuff which Oswald produced for Billy (I
thnk there was only one of his later eps) has a nice housey feel to it. And
if anyone isn't familiar with the Associates catalogue, PLEASE don't think
the cover of Heart of Glass is representative of it. It was some of the
best stuff rolling out of the period.

 What the. ?
Whilst following up the Juan Atkins discography that another
member posted recently I ended up looking into Moritz Van Oswald's shady
past and discovering that he played drums and percussion on the 1990
album by The Associates (any other Scottish members who know of Billy
McKenzie's one true passion in life will understand the cryptic comment
in the Subject line of this post.. he.he.he). This would only be a year
or two before the unbelievable Sonic Sunset and 3MB feat Eddie Flashin
Fowlkes (..as in what ever happened to...) albums and round about the
same time that Basic Channel started Anyone who heard Billy
McKenzie's Discofied version of Blondie's heart of Glass from about the
same time will testify to his love of electronic music but from basic
Channel to The Affectionate Punch is a bit of a leap. Does anyone on
the list have any further info on Mauritzio's other early days
appearances (a sort of Techno before they were famous thread could
easily start here-did you know that Ian Pooley used to be my paper
 boy)

Yep they sure where both a members of the German band Palais Schaumburg.
Palais Schaumburg was one of the important band eighties' in underground scene
called the 'Neue Welle' (new wave). They played a kind of weiry funky dancable
new wave music and sang in german which sounded pretty extraordinary.

Later they made one record with the producer of Depeche Mode/Wire (Gareth
Jones?) which was imho a little bit disappointed.

They must be in their fourties now :-) and still doing fine.

greetings
Pieter (forty too :-)
