(313) Ron Trent Mix on Resident Advisor
A few years back during DEMF I went to the KMS party at the works and was completely blown away by Ron Trent mixing in the front room, so much so that I only caught about of 5 minutes of Kevin Saunderson in the back room. I was so hyper-sleep deprived I was starting to fall asleep, standing up, dancing, which made the experience that much better. Probably many of you get the regular Resident Advisor e-mails but todays lists a nice Podcast/Mix by Ron: http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=66 The direct link is: http://ra.ratm.net/RA066_070814_Ron_Trent_residentadvisor.net.mp3 But hey, you should register on their site, maybe click through on a few ads. It won't kill you!

RE: (313) Ron Trent in Manchester tonight?
have you seen tonight the choice of dos? Yes indeed I'm constantly annoyed at the three nights you want to go out and there's nothing on, on the fourth there's three things you want to go to on at once effect. It's especially vexing since it's a Friday and in Manchester there's not usually much on on Fridays, the exception being the first Friday of the month (as this is) which people must think is an easy one to remember. I've been pulled in two directions for a year since Eyes Down switched to Fridays and is always on the same night as Kindergarten. This may be changing but for tonight my plan is: think k.saunderson Yes, Kindergarten @ Attic. I would go to this, I've never seen Kevin play (or maybe I saw him at a rave in Scotland in 2001 not sure, Inner City were live at one I went to in Carlisle (!) in 2002 and again maybe he span that night too but I don't remember, not through inebriation, it just wasn't a very memorable night). As far as I can tell he doesn't have that good a rep as a DJ (I've heard people say he can spin quite commercial stuff or trance?) so I've never made a journey, even a small one (I think he played Hebden Bridge a while back?) to see him, however if not for everything else I would be going as I've seen nearly all the other bigger (or back in the day?) Detroit artists play (Derrick, Juan, Carl, Kenny, various members of UR, Stacey, Jeff, Shake) so I'd really like to complete the set. + I still LOVE his X-Mix CD. joakim Bugged Out @ 1 Central St. More your bag than mine. You beard stroking weirdos. ron trent Development @ Mint Lounge. So I'm risking the £10 on him showing. Give me a shout Robin, Nick. I'll be trying to find out up to the last minute whether he's made the trip or not. Plus what time he's on - I might get there late as the tale of night pile-up doesn't finish there: Eyes Down @ the Roadhouse with residents Jon K and Kelvin Brown. I love this night. I was going to be giving it a miss tonight under the circumstances but it turns now it's their last at the Roadhouse and for a while so I plan to visit early before moving on to the Ron T gig. The night my mates have just started @ Scubar. You geniuses, you certainly did your homework on picking the right night. I went to the first one last month and promise I'll come next time, tough luck on my £ tonight.

Maybe it was on that groovetech site though. did you try and search the dhp archives? my mate saw him dj in new york. said he was good. i've seen him a couple of times. like his productions he seems to have two styles. that smooth kinda broken sophisto-house (new genre! :) ) style which i kinda like but only for short bursts, after which i get bored and the deep dubbed out kinda style of house/techno which i love. Ron Trent is easilly one of my top 5 favourite DJs. I know what you mean about his style, but he always seems to pick out the smooth kinda broken sophisto-house gems, in my mind anyway. His 4-hour set to close the KMS party @ DEMF 2002 is totally legendary. He played Blaze's 'Glora Muse' twice from CD-R. Otto and I were pretty much beside ourselves with curiosity and hypnotism. He seems to have gotten over his aviaphobia (new word! - had to one-up Robin) though, as he played NYE @ Cargo in London. Tristan

Sundiatta O.M. is a percussionist (and vocalist I think) that recorded an album with Ron Trent (and Chez Damier) for Prescription towards the end of their initial run. It's a nice double-pack, I think, and sort of signalled the direction Ron Trent would move towards from then on, especially as he started collaborating with Anthony Nicholson thereafter. It was one of the first really organic records he produced, IIRC. Sundiatta also performed at one (or two???) of the DEMF's? I think he may have been the drummer who played with Derrick May at the first one, and for some reason I recall something related to the Lost Poets??? Lots of half-memories here. At any rate, that record is nice. :) Came out around '97 I think. Derrick Carter featured the track with all the political crap at the beginning of his disc of the three-disc Back to Basics tin. Umar Bin Hassan from the last poets went on stage while derrick was playing gumbo - submarine (dance mania). And he did this beautiful poem. Wich I think never got released on an lp... And Sundiatta was drumming even when Derrick spun bob azzam - batucada por favor. That´s like bringing your 909 on stage and playing the ride cymbal when a track from MR G is playing... Is the Urban Sounds Gallery label actually distinct from the Prescription (new and old) releases? I should really scope more of these out... I don't think it is, the designs are similar: same font etc. I assumed it was a sub label as, at least on the one I have (North Avenue/RBM), Ron and Chez are executive producers. I was just wondering what else came out on it, if it's still going etc. I assume Metaphor is more of an Anthony Nicholson thing and is still active, but any discographies out there? Jonny.

Re: [313] Ron Trent
Is the Urban Sounds Gallery label actually distinct from the Prescription (new and old) releases? I should really scope more of these out... It came out last week and should be available. I'll keep an eye out for it. More on the Ron Trent questions front: does anybody have discography information on the Metaphor or Urban Sound Gallery labels?
