ask them if they had ever had any feedback from jamaican / reggae or dub
DJs who were aware of the BC records? inneresting. ps 'bass culture' by

Wackies is the label started in NYC over 20 years ago by Jamaican, Lloyd
"Bullwackie" Barnes. Over 89 releases, & still counting. BC has been
re-releasing 12-inch singles, + CD/vinyl versions of select lps from the 80s
over the past year or so (The Love Joys, Junior Delahaye, Wayne Jarrett,
Horace Andy, The Meditations, Leroy Sibbles & others). Rhythm & Sound's
"Mango Drive" is their remake/remodel of one of his Riddim Force tracks, if
I'm not mistaken. Here's two sites well worth checking for more info.:

He uses a broken Waldorf 4-Pole Filter that generates a lot of hiss
(hence his sound) because it got dropped.

This is an interesting discussion but i think this should be discussed on a
gear list, actually the tech-gear list discussed this a few months back,
maybe you could check out the archives on e-groups.

I've heard from someone who has heard from someone else, who've heard from
other person... (very unreliable anyway :), that Mark and Moritz have an old
SSL mixing board with full automation.
I know that SSL boards are known for great warm sound, so maybe this is what
adds that warmth to their trax.

While on the subject of BC/CR. Can anyone recommend some labels to which it
would be worth sending demo tapes with BC/CR style material?

Lots of the early stuff sounds very DX7 though. Especially the bass and
paino-esque sounds.
I think this can be done too with very advanced analogue synths such as those
from Oberheim & Sequential, the xpander and
Prophet VS, so they are probably those.

But I don't think the synth they use it that important, their soundsecrets lie
in the inspiring use effects and indeed very warm
compression. As for the EQ it is probably tube based (probably the compressor).
Very expensive stuff, but the EQ could also be the work of an opto-or so called
vactrol compression method. This gives a certain groove to the mix because the
compressor is a bit on the slow side with its attacks and releases (thanks to
the
use of optical light cells, hence the name
opto-compressor), it also sounds quite warm.

Oh..man..this is too geeky.

danny

i always thought that the basic channel set up is/was analogue. isn't that
right?

but i think chain reaction artists like fluxion use reaktor. there's a
monolake demo included with the software - or at least with the version that
i've got (haven't used it yet though).

It most likely is a compressor that they are using, it gives it that nice
warm fat feel...

as far as what they use, I'm sure someone else will know better than me...

For sound forge and the like, I use all the Waves software...
