Re: (313) OT Prince LP
I am not 100 percent won over by this album. It's very MOR to me. I like it, but I don't love it. I still think the young 'uns are giving him a run for his diamonds and pearls, even if they lack his musical genius (and scope). Andre 3000 has the flair, Pharrell the eccentricity (and pop ethos and sheer prolific-ness), Moodymann the mystique... I don't think the romantic content would compromise his Witness status, since he focusses on marriage not macking, but the political missive of Dear Mr Man (aimed at Bush) would - I thought JW's were discouraged from participating in politics or nationalistic things as it recognises an authority other than Jehovah. I guess Prince is contradictory as ever! Am totally excited to see Adina Howard back, he he. No freak songs though. ;( -- >From: sean deason <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, <313@hyperreal.org> >Subject: Re: (313) OT Prince LP >Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2004 9:08 PM > > I havent heard the new album. i have been collecting prince vinyl for a while, and those 12"s are hard to find, either cheap or in good condition. i got the 12" mixes from a friend, they definitely helped round out my collection. ani : -Original Message- : From: Matt MacQueen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] : Sent: Monday, April 19, 2004 2:48 PM : To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] : Cc: 313@hyperreal.org : Subject: Re: (313) OT Prince LP : : And speaking of prince bootlegs, there's a double pack (in purple : jacket, of course?) called "Prince - ultra rare 12-inch : mixes" that, if : you don't have originals, has some nice stuff on it. Re: (313) OT Prince LP
He does some of the older material, I think he's retiring that. He doesn't yeah there's an article on him in the last Time magazine -- this is the last time he's playing his older stuff. supposedly. they also talk about him being a jehovah's witness now and how you'd think it would tone down his lyrics but that his new album gets pretty risque in spite of that...ha! _ Lose those love handles! Re: (313) OT Prince LP
He does some of the older material, I think he's retiring that. He doesn't do the more risque stuff, like you won't hear Darling Nikki. He has changed some lyrics as well. He's a Witness now so he leaves out some songs, even something like The Cross as Witnesses believe Jesus was crucified on a stake, not a cross. He does the song Everlasting Love which is obviously inspired by JW beliefs, otherwise it was all older. I really enjoyed his new arrangement of Sign Of The Times, very jazzy. -- >From: Matt MacQueen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: "Cobert, Gwendal" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: Re: (313) OT Prince LP >Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 1:28 AM > > On Apr 19, 2004, at 7:35 AM, Cobert, Gwendal wrote: >> I think it started with "All the ctritics love you in New York", back >> at the end of "1999" ? >> > > which, to bring it all back to 313, was sampled/re-edited to all hell > by KDJ on his absolutely amazing doublepack 'U Can Dance If U Want 2'. > I've lost count now of how many Kenny/Theo/3 Chairs tracks have > sampled Prince.. and to usually to great effect. > > I'm excited because I got tickets to see the Musicology tour here in > June, supposedly lots (most?) of older material this time around, yay. > There must be detroit dates for this tour, right? Did I miss something? Since when does the dude call himself Prince again? Is he through being the symbol? And NPG? I thought that that was gone too. "Musicology" is cool BTW, like the video too. I havent heard the new album. I've ignored Princes output for years after being a rabid obsessed and loyal fan from the begining (around 1978 or '79) but the new track/video "Musicology" has me excited that the Prince I know and love is back to doing what he does best! I've heard it. There are some really good tracks on there. A few of which sounds like he's been taking notes from the Neptunes. But there are also a few dodgy moments as well.
