Apropos 313 and Apple: np on iPod: Theo Parrish, 'Falling Up (Carl Craig

By the way, notice how 'Dreamers Blues (In The Thick Mix)' on the

Um, it seems to me that

A) Coldplay is a pop band, and by no means as egregious an example of
the species as can readily found on offer.
B) They asked permission, to use a short quote from a Kraftwerk song.
They didn't just bite.
C) Kraftwerk themselves are relentlessly commercial.
D) As much as we're all in their debt, from all reports the KW guys
are kind of jerks, and rich jerks besides, who've gotten more mileage
off fewer ideas in the past few years than anyone this side of George
W Bush.

and

E) Internet outrage is the most devalued currency in the known universe.

PS I don't really mind if KW are jerks. Wagner used to kick his dog.

I hadn't heard the Coldplay track that uses the Kraftwerk riff till this
thread
came up (had only heard rumors).
If anyone wants to compare: http://www.last.fm/music/Coldplay/_/Talk
(click on the green triangle to the left of "Talk")
and if you don't have your copy of Kraftwerk's
Computer Love handy:
http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,116410,00.html
(but listen to the Windows Media clip cos the RealPlayer clip uses a
different part of the song). My wife (knows Kraftwerk, not Coldplay) just
heard me play the comparison and she said "Kraftwerk should sue". I hope
Kraftwerk get tons of royalties from this. Andrew

I used to be in an industrial/synth outfit (briefly) about 25 years ago
wherein one of the other members who was this really intense

We have some good friends who have been similarly inflicted.
Coldplay is, for them, the pinnacle of music.
Other than scheduling Eman Laerton to talk to them, there isn't much you
can do. http://www.youhavebadtasteinmusic.com/
I have liked worse things, I'm sure (well, I said that to appear
reasonable, but I have liked some pretty cheesy stuff in my day).
My brother-in-law got married last Novenmber. As we both understand we
have some snarkiness inside regarding these things, he
confidentially mentioned to me that as he was moving her stuff from her
place to his, he had finally gotten a complete look at her CD
racks and he hated everything in it. Tough spot. Often I have found that
people whose tastes reside in the mainstream just need a little exposure.
Of course, some of us are driven towards that aorta and some are content
with a distant pulse. Also, one person's aorta is another person's
(searching for the
proper medical term to complete the metaphor. It isn't coming..)
shpincter - or something. I guess that's one of the things which makes
the world go 'round.
Far be it from me to attempt to construct a philosophy of aesthetics
based on objective grounds on a mailing list. ;-)

I'd rather start the fray and then sit back and watch.
