They've already announced iPod mini on their web page yesterday:
http://www.apple.com/ipodmini/ but it's not that much cheaper, $250 for 4GB.
I'm waiting for iPod with record function, if that's ever going to happen.

this isnt bad news for the record companies as much as it is for the
distribution networks.

record labels serve many purposes, among them being prestige and a
recognized sound. if I tell you somethings on minus for instance, you're
gonna know what to expect more than picking people randomly online and going
by a 5-word description of what genre the music is. and apples not gonna
press up records for you :)besides, it would probably be green
see-through vinyl with a giant white apple in the center...

again, point taken about the money ending up in the hands of corporations.

but... for the less technically inclined folks out there, buying a song on
iTunes and downloading it to an iPod sure makes things easy, which has the
potential of popularizing internet distribution of music. and once the
masses are comfortable with that, then independent distribution may more
feasible.

it's about evolution, not revolution.

IMO the internet alone is the place for distribution that everyone
has access to (well not everyone as of right now, but soon
enough). participating in online communities can raise your
profile and its easy enough to sell things through your own
website. i dont see how padding apple's wallet is to anyone's
advantage. centralizing the money in the music industry will lead
to a similar situation to what we're experiencing now. for the mp3

will probs introduce some kind of wave editor (ala soundforge and

i want garage band to be a firewire based midi/audio IO device with a

I think that that's the most likely explanation, and it would be fairly
exciting although I can see potentially negative consequences for the world
of vinyl pressing and distribution if not necessarily for actual producers
themselves. Could it be argued that Apple will be stepping into the shoes of
mp3.com if they go ahead with this?

And what are Apple Records going to say about it? I can't imagine them being
very happy at all!
