Just want to name the Roland R5 again too :). Its got a very advanced
Yeah, too bad it sounds like a piece of shit.

Yup..that's what makes them records raw shifty!

On a new tread. I need again record ID.

Its this latino chicago (another one)record. There is no real melody or
bassline, just 707 drums and lots of
latino percussion which flamm etc. There is a faggy vocal which goes something
 like
a latin kind of love, a spanish kind of lust, my style and ?... and then
 something in spanish I guess.
Its these kinds of things that make a perfect fit with Sharivari in a DJ set.

Yeah, it's RAZZ's Puerto rican lover (DJ Int.). One funky-ass record by
Ralphi Rosario. Faggy vocals they may sound, but that's how ALL house
vocals were back then! That's why so many people were confused and thought
it was HI-NRG when they first heard House.

Re: [313] Re: Wanted:TR-808, an alternative

2000-05-17 Thread stephen
I have a real 808 and nothing sounds like the real deal.
As for some of the alternatives discussed on this list i will give a
quick assessment.

Novation Drumsation V1, V2.

I also have a Novation Drumsation and even though it would be a good
inexpensive alternative it does NOT sound like a real 808, a real 808
has a hotter output and there is a notable difference in the sound
quality. (bass drum, hi-hats, cymbal, clap, snare with snappy turned up)

I miss the 16 step sequencer and swing and tap recording and flam and
and and...

A TR505 or 626 would be a good XOX type sequencer with shuffle/flam
similar to the 909 however I do not recommend the TR707 because it can
only send midi in song mode.

Moded 606

I've had the 606 and the DR110, these have similar sound characteristics
to an 808 but they don't sound like a real 808 even if you mod the
606 so you can cntrol decay on the bass drum or give it individual outs.

Korg ER-1

I've played with this toy for hours trying to replicate the sound of a
808 to no avail.
Sure you can make lots of interesting electronic percussion noises but
if your looking for a 808 alternative you will be disappointed.
*There is no individual outs.

EMU Orbit

Just curious, in your opinion, of the drum machines being produced
today,
which would be a good substitute? Anybody like alesis machines or the
emu
orbit?

It's just sample play back with a few bells and whistles something like
a Yamaha FS1R blows it away and its only $400 if you can still find one.

Yamaha FS1R

This is the best FM synth ever made, way better then the DX5/ DX7IID, it
can even replicate a raw dx100.
Listen to the sounds on this thing and you will be amazed.
There is a drum kit that is similar to an 808 and does a great job on
the cowbell.
This does not use any samples, its 100% FM and Format Shaping, you can
edit and create your own sounds.
Yes, there is a editor for the Mac and PC.

Note: If you do buy a real 808 you will need a din sync converter and
lots of FX because its dry, please buy one from a reliable source
because these things are old and can have problems.

my 80802,
stephen.

Agreed that the er1 is a great sounding machine and has a very nice
interface (the step sequencer is great). But it should be pointed out that
it is very aptly named as a rhythm *synth*, not a drum machine. Yes, it
makes drum sounds (and lots of other wierd stuff), but you have to
program/patch them in. Not exactly difficult, but it does not operate like
a typical drum machine; there are no individual sound selections. Lots of
people don't mind this, but it should be noted for anyone actually looking
for a drum 'machine'. It's built more for screw-around-and-see-what-happens
than it is for building drum-only patterns.

If you really want an 808 type drum machine with sequencer, the Korg ER-1
is
great. It has tru analog sounds, idiot-proof 808 sequencing with accent,
built in delay and low boost, and easy solos and mutes. The best thing-it
is one of the few(only?) modern drum machines that can record/play new
parts
on the fly without stopping!- a tremendous bonus for live PAs like mine.
Its sounds are unique-they are very 808-like, but are not copies of those
sounds like the Drumstation or any one of the new Roland boxes. Overall, a
very fun and loveable piece of gear.

Alans is right about the DrumStation. perfect
reproduction, but I miss the 16 step sequencer and swing and tap recording and

Yeah, yeah that's for wimps. Funky-ass step-time sequences, random notes then
quantize, just like Derrick May, baby. R-8 and 909 hi-hats together, panned
left and right, flying all over the place. I love techno.
